If she actually is lesbian or bi, it isn't because of you; humans don't choose what interests them sexually, they only choose what they do about it, and even then it's not as much under control as might be desirable.

A recent example of the RDF is Jobs' claim that the slick design of the iPhone 4 antenna is not especially at fault for losing signal strength when the phone is held in a fairly common way. He says that all phones have this problem.

Yet somehow.. somehow the iPhone 4 is the one that really suffers in this way. The one the users actually complain about. Reality Distortion?

I love the look of Apple's products, but Steve is getting a bit too exclusionary and monopolistic in his business goals and policies for my preference.

I'm like you with Mr bean now, I find even most of the original Monty Python TV series hasn't aged that well, which is a bit sad really.
Pity that due to copyright reasons still being argued about we are unlikely to ever see Spike Milligan's Q series, that could be side splittingly funny.
I doubt that most on this forum now would be old enough to remember it.

Awful TV showing in Aus atm, nothing to look forward to either.
I refuse to watch the travesty of Top Gear on a commercial station, so I download them [I'm not kidding, they've turned a 50 min show into 90 min show because of all the ads].
Very surprised that this seasons Top Gear was only 6 ep's.
I went to the site and they had a small video of the boys but no real explanation of why so short a season or what the future of the show might be.

Only series 8 of QI to look forward to, I got a list of series 8's taped shows and I've worked out by going backwards from the Xmas special that it won't be televised in the UK till sometime around Sept 25th.
Thankfully the previous 7 series are all worth watching again.

changing the subject....

cant get this image out of my head..everytime i think about it ..it makes me laugh...

the england football match on wednesday night...

im not really a massive football fan

but what made me laugh was when all the england team was all standing there singing the anthem looking all proud like thy are returning heros i saw in the background several large posters all held by the fans all saying the same thing

"Never has so few, given so little to so many"

it made me laugh..so true but still funny

i remmeber this saying at school it was for our soldiers and it really went
"never have so few, given so much to so many..basically opposite to england.

another thing i thought was funny was the commentators who said "oh wow and the crowd isnt booing england when they came on and all i could hear was the loud hissing sound of the graphic equalizer turned up full to block out the booing crowd one could easily see the fans doing by lip reading..

and then the tv channel did a montage of englands latest string of epic fails..

i really feel for true english fans pain of having such a garbage group of flops :turd who just cant be asked to perform..it seem to me all they can score is each others girlfriends..

as for fabio..well we all now know who was in the barney the dinosaur outfit all those years.. :turd

Has anyone else had these sudden periods of total disinterest for newer games? I even feel like firing up FF7 to finally complete it (yes, I never did before). BF2 and CoD2 are a bit more recent... but it's been nearly 5 years since their release dates!

whats the new design obsession to have MASSIVE front grills?(Audi, Citroen, Ford, Volkswagen etc)

the bonnet lines and lighting design make it look ever so slightly like the current models of aston martin. but with a massive gaping hole at the front. like a shocked/surprised smiley :O :o

A surprised smiley thats also frowning slightly

perhaps its afraid of what all the chavs will do to it when they somehow get hold (steal) one :P "argggghhhhh there gonna put horrible spoiler kits on me!!!!!"

Audi/VW hopefully stops with the gaping mouths where they are now. I like them. Ford should realise that there's a fine line between a stylish, quite big grille and that whalemouth on the ST. But I bet it's a fun little car and from behind the wheel, you can't see that you're driving Moby Dick! :p

You expect lecturers to turn up or something? That'll teach you for going to lectures in the first place, chump!:P When I was at uni I swear the lecturers were lazier than the students. So many cancelled lectures. Was pretty bad sometimes, especially when it was revision lectures. I remember one time when our lecture was moved to some random room on the top floor of the humanities building (fascinating place for an engineering student - girls everywhere:o). It took us ages to find it, and when we eventually did, the lecturer hadn't even bothered to turn up. Some people don't like that students these days are acting more like consumers, but I'm glad they are starting to hold lazy and crappy lecturers to account. I don't mind them not turning up just so long as I get some form of notification beforehand so I don't waste my time walking places.

Also just found out that as I'm doing Electronic Engineering with Nanotechnology I have to write a 5000 word essay on ethics. Where the hell did they get that from?! :brickwall

SaturnReturn
4th October 2010, 10:25 PM
Probably because everyone thinks nano-robots are going to destroy the world. Is that ethical? In some ways I guess not.

As part of Mechanical Engineering I did business studies, accounting and Mandarin. I think they throw random stuff in to make it seem more interesting, but for me it just made it more boring. The business side helps a bit later on for project management, but really, once you know how to work out the different types of profit and cash flow, the rest tends to be left to people who give a crap.:P

mic-dk
5th October 2010, 05:32 AM
Well nano-robots could destroy the world, just like a virus with a slightly faulty design or a hydrogen bomb with a bad trigger can.

I'm not saying that they exist yet, but given time we could have selfreplicating nano robots that'll eat your liver if you speak german. It may have started as the ultimate Repair Your Oktoberfest pill, but somewhere, something went wrong.

Besides, we really don't need Yeldar turning into a mad nano-scientist, so write your ethics essay, I say! :nod

Ragarding the nano-bots as a virus, that is possible. A doctor who is treating someone he hates may make nanobots not to treat the patient, but instead kill the patient(In this case, vendetta can kill).I think that is where ethics goes,as far as I know(I think).

Agreed. I once had to eat as many cold baked beans as I could with a toothpick in a minute as part of some stupid party game. It was like torture. Just realised it's related to the uni thing a bit. Family would always crack those lame stereotypical jokes with me about always cooking beans on toast for dinner, but I naturally had to disappoint them.

Did anyone watch the last Inbetweeners? I've not really watched it properly before, mainly because I don't like any of the characters. It was pretty hilarious for the first half though. The uni that 'featured' in it is where I went, and now makes me wonder if it has some kind of reputation.

I had the longest day ever mainly due to Rush Hour traffic in London. I was in Kensington today and said to myself "right, I'll leave at 3pm when I've done everything I need to do so I'll avoid the rush." Well, 3pm became 4pm and I hit the traffic on the way home. Yeah, okay - mostly they're not all they're cracked up to be. ;)

There's this crazy loud lesbian woman who gets on my train sometimes, who's definitely the dungaree wearer of the relationship, if you get my drift. And I kid you not, she talks to anyone she vaguely knows about how gorram great it is being a lesbian and how much her and her partner "connect", which I didn't think was possible for them without accessories, but there you go - her loud words, not mine.

This is on the early train. The 8:01 express. I don't even want to hear about straight sex between really hot people at that time in the morning, never mind her butchness telling tall tales of rug munching goodness.

I've actually switched carriages on the train to avoid her a few times - even my noise isolating earphones (Shure SE115's, audiophiles!) can't block her lesbosity out entirely. Do not want.

Anyhoo, I just wondered if amplificated's cousin or his new in-law were of the fantasy lesbian variety. :D

SaturnReturn
13th October 2010, 11:09 PM
That sounds more like an issue with loud people. I'm not a fan of loud people who seek attention either, especially on the train.

On a slightly related note, did I ever tell everyone about what I heard on the train one day? This guy was with his little kid (3 years old or something), who was asking all those little kids questions - what's that? why's the sky blue? why this? why that? - then all of a sudden, he comes out with, "Daddy, is that woman a pwostitrute?" :eek I couldn't believe it, and assumed at first that I must have misheard, but I turned my head in the toward the part of the platform where the kid was pointing and there was a woman with a shortish skirt and boots on. OMG! Then the Dad confirmed it by making a disapproving remark about her attire and comparing her to someone else they know who he obviously didn't approve of.:o
I was so shocked, especially as I have a memory of being about 10 before I first heard the word. Two girls in my class were having an argument, with one calling the other a prostitute and me thinking, "My Dad's a prostitute, what's wrong with that?". Turns out my Dad was a Protestant. Then there's me telling my parents at the dinner table I studied e-lesbian history in class that day. Stupid Elizabethans! Happy days!

I took my daughter for a walk by the reservoirs at the top of town a week or so back and there were so many people walking dogs it was like crufts. She's at the asking questions all the time stage, so she was going "Daddy, why are those people waking their dogs?"

"Because it's a nice place to walk dogs." I replied.

Some time later we see more people and she asks again "Daddy, why are those people walking their dogs, too?"

"Like I said, because it's a nice place to walk dogs." I replied.

Back at the car park and an estate (station wagon for our trans-Atlantic cousins) pulls up beside us and the folk unload three dogs from the back.

"Wow, daddy! More dogs. Why are so many people walking their dogs here?" she asks again.

"Well, like I said - this is a great dogging spot." I replied. Straight face, too.

I couldn't help myself. Internally I was pissing my pants, but no doubt this will come back to haunt me when she tells her grandma to take her cocker spaniel up to the reservoir because it's a great dogging spot!

Walking my dog yesterday (I actually walked a real dog! I swear!), I pondered the story. Particularly the estate / stationwagon part.

In Danish, such a vehicle is a 'stationcar' - including the 'car' bit, which is kinda weird. But... as an exception to the rule, a Volvo used to be referred to as what translates into Estate Car.

Why this honour of a British title is bestowed only on Volvo I really don't know. Every other car gets the common and base American title.

I guess this constitutes Useless fact of the Day :D

I think I will find out about redundancies at work tomorrow. There was an ominous email to the whole group today, just telling everyone to be in the office on Thursday morning. It's a bit weird though, as they've never told us that before. At the same time my group never suffered much before, so that could be a bad sign.

I hope I don't get selected, but in some ways am just as concerned about workmates, both for them and for me (selfishly). There are relatively few people who I really get on with very well, so if a single one of them went it would totally suck, and some of them have recently gained obligations like mortgages and families/dependents, which I'm thankful I don't, just in case it all goes horribly wrong.

I really want to put off going to bed, as if it would somehow put off tomorrow coming. Unfortunately, it's actually after 1am already, so tomorrow is already here. Stupid tomorrow! Oh well, fingers crossed.

mic-dk
21st October 2010, 06:51 AM
urgh... I went through exactly that last month. Everybody be at their desk tomorrow 8 am :|

Did you get to keep your job?

SaturnReturn
21st October 2010, 07:22 PM
We got another email telling us to let them know if we'd be out of the office Friday as well, so presumably it's tomorrow now. I wish it were a bit clearer. We all know what it's about but unless someone actually says the word 'redundancies' then it feels a bit weird. It's almost worse that they treat the word as taboo. I kind of feel for the guy giving people the news too. That must suck!

I also realised today that tomorrow will be exactly three years since I started working there. Somehow, I'm not sure that's a good omen. Neither is the fact that my boss tried to strike up a conversation with me today, as that hasn't really happened before.

Hopefully I'm just paranoid. I'm definitely a little bit paranoid.:nod

mic-dk
21st October 2010, 08:08 PM
Well, just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean they're not out to get you :nod

It's never a good sign when people who may be in the know starts changing habits, but it's quite likely he doesn't know anything yet and either tries to calm everybody else down or tries to hide his own insecurity.

At least my company has gotten redundancies down to an art. It is announced a day in advance, is over the next day after a few hours and the casualtylist is published at midday. It can seem a bit brutal, but it is over in a hurry.

It is still not exactly good for morale and motivation though :| I hope you make it through!

SaturnReturn
21st October 2010, 08:11 PM
A day in advance? Is that the only thing you hear at all? We've had to have a long process this time. I think for over 100 people there has to be a 3 month consultation period or something like that. It never is that long though, as they seem to include whatever notice staff are to be given in that period. It's all very weird. But people do hate the way it's dragged out.

mic-dk
22nd October 2010, 07:15 AM
Well if the rumour mill fails, then one day is all we get. Of course, depending on how long you've been with the company, you still get paid 3-6 months after you're sent home so you're not just put on the street with an empty pocket and sore bum :)

They tried one time announcing it a few months in advance. I bet it cut productivity by 75%, everybody just sat around and waited, no new projects were started and nobody had any inclination to anything other than the absolute minimum. I say it works much better just getting it done in a hurry.

F.E.I.S.A.R

SaturnReturn
23rd October 2010, 12:35 AM
I'm not sure what happens here once people know. I can't imagine anyone wanting to hang around for long. But once people know their last day is supposed to be near the start of December, so I think people have to stay on. Some have holidays carried over which they can use to get out earlier.

Anyway, I didn't hear anything today at all - not even any rumours. But I checked my emails earlier this evening and there was a message saying that the process is ongoing and we can't be given the 'all clear' yet. I will try to just get on with stuff now and not think about it. I do wish they'd just make things more certain for everyone though.:(

Nutcase:259

do animals get hiccups?

SaturnReturn
24th October 2010, 05:13 PM
They're making cuts. The last day of work for anyone who will go is already stated. It's a matter of who and how many. Then once they identify people for redundancy, they look at options for relocating people outside the UK if possible. Then there are some who will want to argue their case etc. So the process is ongoing. But because I haven't heard anything at all about anyone, I'm wondering if they haven't even told everyone yet. They've said they can't give the all clear so I have no idea what's really happening.
But still, I think that you might be right. Obviously, as long as I haven't heard then I'm safe, and the same goes for workmates etc.

I imagine animals do get hiccups. It's completely involuntary and some weird natural occurrence that I think could easily happen in animals.

The mouth has got to be one of the most sensitive parts of your body, I once got in a fight which resulted in me getting a broken jaw. They had to dislocate my jaw to insert a titanium link where it had broke, then they wrapped a load of wire round my teeth so the could then put elastic bands between the top and bottom set of teeth to keep the jaw from moving. That wasn't the worse bit though, when they took all the wire out, they just spayed anaesthetic on my gums, then they pulled all the wire out between my teeth, I've never know pain like it ever.

That's brilliant. That just made my day!

On another note, I'm going to see Bon Jovi when they come to Perth next month. There was a "$67 tickets for 67 hours" special going on and, well, that was too good to pass up!

Next thing I know, there's this book titled "Zero Gravity" where you can put the book on the table, flick it,and still stay at the same height until it hits a wall.It isn't affected by gravity in any way.

I bet that would be a terrifying thought for those who fear flying. :D

What amazes me in this story is how even this amount of travelling would only be 16% of the distance from the Earth to the Sun. A whopping 150'000'000 million kilometres (1 AU or 1 Astronomical Unit).

It really is unbelievably hard to grasp just how gigantic the observable universe is (nevermind how big it actually is).

Comparisons like that are always interesting to watch. I remember watching a few videos similar to that (though they usually skipped to VY Canis Majoris within a few examples).

The actual distances between all these objects still fascinates me most, and to think that we can't even see the entire universe: Observable Universe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Observable_universe).

I could spend ages reading about it all. :g

@Feisar: Yes, there would be gravity and it would still be 24 hours to a day since the earth spins about its own axis to make a day (not how fast either rotates around the other... that would be years). ^^ But it would get more confusing if they believed (and if they were right) that the earth was stationary with only the sun moving. Then the sun would have to be zooming round us at an incredible speed. O_o

And then it would get even better if the earth was believed to be flat. ^^

Nutcase:259
26th November 2010, 11:42 AM
