Linux on PCs (on x86 architectures) runs like nothing else. There is even Flash,
YouTube etc. on x86. A good distribution has most of the things already
configured. The situation is somewhat different on non-x86 (where Windows
isn't an option at all, lol). Anyways, I even got YouTube running on a PS3Linux
without flash. Adobe is just too lazy to port a ppc version of their Flash
implementation. So even if there is no support, no need to give up under Linux,
another strength the system.
Linux definitely has it's uses, but desktop computers isn't one of them. ...
Desktop is the only part where Linux 'lacks' behind due to the way it has
evolved over time. But anyways, I don't think that any Windows can match a
fully-configured GNOME and / or KDE desktop system. No way. Best of all, Linux
is free (like in freedom). I don't know why I should pay 199,99 € (http://emea.microsoftstore.com/DE/Microsoft/Windows/Windows-7) to get Windows 7.

I like your entrance with the staggered ballistas :rock But are caravans still able to enter?
Edit @ ProblemSolver Okay, let's dance :) My point isn't that linux (or unixen in general) is pointless, far from it. I wouldn't run real business application on anything else.
My point is that; this entry is written on a bogstandard Ubuntu 9.09/Gnome, with the pre-installed Firefox. I accepted all the auto-updates, and it checks every day, but it is still unable to show a youtube video. I could do it at one point, but somewhere in the process the codecs got screwed. Sure, I could fix by performing my magic incantations, but I really shouldn't have to.
My small, cheap netbook at home with Win XP never fails me in this way. It happily plays videos and show me my bankaccount - even after patches has been applied. I could manage all these smallish problems and issues if I really wanted, but I can only imagine what eg. my fahther would do. Well, I know what he would do; call me and let me do yet more sysadmin work in my already precious sparetime. Time that could be spent playing the game that shall not be named in this thread. Time I'll gladly pay for.

@ mic-dk: Yeah, they can enter through the wide passageway up the brook, that entrance is easily floodable to prevent unwanted entry.
There's also 5 (now 6) catapults placed further back behind the massive stockpile of random crap (ballista ammo and flung stones can pass through fortifications :D)
mic-dk
18th December 2009, 11:36 AM
Ooh, yeah thats pretty sweet with those catapults :)
I'll admit I can't quite figure out how you get the caravans inside - they enter from the south, running north towards your depot? Also, are your forges magma powered? I see a lot of bars lying around :)
This morning I chatted with a friend of mine about his latest adventure:

omega329
18th December 2009, 11:49 AM
The wagons enter along the brook, then go up the floodable passageway, up the 3-wide ramps, across the top of the wall, and down again on the other side (this prevents the whole fortress from being flooded when the passageway gets flooded)
He killed a dragon with traps? XD
I have over 50 war dogs assigned to a single hammerdwarf, who makes up his own military unit...
he's permanently outside, as it takes too long for all the dogs to get through the narrow passageways XD

Last night, my first and oldest friend, Rashid passed away. He was diagnosed with cancer. I'm not feeling too great tbh, but my pain/loss is nothing compared to the loss/pain his dear parents, family and wife are feeling.
Rashid was a good man, with no vices or bad habits. An only son, he was the bread winner for the family... full of smiles, full of love and life, he was a brother I will always miss.
I never got to tell him some things, like how dear he is to me, or how much love I have for him... I believe in God, and just know in my heart that he is in a good place.

The funeral was today at 5:30pm gmt... Huge turnout. Was very cold - freezing in fact. Muslim cemetaries are not as nicely maintained as some well established Christian cenetaries, so it was tricky navigating our way around the other graves (ice and hard uneven mud/ground), was pretty dark too - only the occasional bit of light from a hand held HID lamp (about 4 of these). There must have been at least a 1000 people there... I saw a lot of old friends who I hadn't seen. Some in years. I managed to get near the grave, when the prayers were being called. All us friends were there, and some got emotional. Those bonds were there from nursery days, there's friends, and then there's friends who are more like brothers... Was pretty intense. I'm proud of my friends, they all managed to turn up. Some travelling from far away to be there.
There was a lot of Rashids family there too, as you'd expect. Lots of elders aswell, who took care of the calling to prayer and stuff. I'm gonna miss my friend... But I'm confident he's in a better place.

On topic
I became slightly depressed yesterday. Based on a BBC article, it seems that house prices are rising at a rate faster than I can save money, even though I'm saving virtually everything I earn. Even if I were to save every single penny I possibly could, they'd still be rising faster than my savings. All this really means, is that I'll have less savings after buying, once I can actually afford something (based on getting a big enough mortgage, which depends on salary). But it's annoying to be in this position. I'd like to move out to gain some independence and find somewhere more convenient for getting to work. But if I were to move out of home and start paying proper hefty London rent (As opposed to smallish money-to-Dad type rent), then I'll be even more screwed in a few years' time. Knowing how much I would need to save would only make the rent feel like money down the drain. I really thought I was in a reasonable position, as I've basically been a scrooge my whole life. :|

Saturn, I can relate to your story. My brother is in almost the same situation. He, his wife and their 1 year old girl, my niece, is stuck in a rented apartment, with no hope of saving enough money to pay the downpayment on a house.
While the rest of the country suffers from declining prices, for some reason that just doesn't happen here abouts.
That basically means that I get richer and richer just by owning a house and my brother and his wife is just stuck in their small apartment, despite both having reasonably paying jobs.
And on that happy note, I'll wish you all a Happy New Year - gotta get started cleaning the fish and crabs :D

Saturn mate - I feel for your predicament mate. London living is expensive as hell though, so it just means that knowing the art of the "scrimp 'n save" = WIN. A small one type apartment starts at around £700 PCM locally in East London, and a can of coke is still 50p :D Around the same as what you pay in your ends...
... the suck of London is the commute - hideously de-energising experiences to be had in the rush hours of London - and you pay an arm and leg for it...
Bah - almost forgot the whole congestion charging issue - it may have alleviated some traffic from central London but in reality, it has just diverted it around London, therefore increasing carbon footprint (moronic)... sorry, I'm off on one aren't I? :paperbag ok ok I'll shut up.

@Saturn-- Almost the same situation here. Back in October, 2 friends and myself were on the hunt for a house. We found several that should have been condemned and 1 "keeper". The asking price was 115,000 dollars USD. We bid $110K. It came time to finallize and we signed the papers...only one problem-- in the uber fine print (that was never explained to us by either banks or realtors), it stated we had 48 hours to do ALL of the home repairs upon signing. This included a boiler, new kitchen and a new roof. It was literally impossible. So longer story short, they kept our $1000 deposit and we lost the house. Now prices are going back up and theres not a snowbalkls chance in hell that we're going to get a 3 bedroom house for what our loan is. Stupid banks and realtors!!!!!

... the suck of London is the commute - hideously de-energising experiences to be had in the rush hours of London - and you pay an arm and leg for it...
This is one of the main things that makes me want to move somewhere a bit more convenient. At the moment I have to get a packed train and a packed tube. The trains are cancelled frequently in the slightest bit of bad weather, which is even more annoying. There's one which is relatively empty, because it's only 5 minutes after the previous one, but it's cancelled about half the time, with no reason given. I don't think many people can realise just how draining it is doing the commute every day. It's almost like a fight for survival. It is indeed, also ridiculously expensive. I almost felt a bit silly finding it so tiring, but then my old family doctor admitted this himself, without any prompting. I think he also called it 'hell'.:(
Even with all the gripes though, I'm in a reasonably privileged position. I'm not in the position where I have to pay rent but I can at least afford to move out and pay rent for myself if I choose to. That makes me one of the lucky ones really. But given how much it will cost me in the long run, I'm not sure it's worth it. It's a hefty price to pay for a feeling of independence, and compared to putting the money towards a mortgage, it's really cash down the drain in some ways. I've looked at part own, part rent schemes, but so far not found anything particularly appealing. They're either in places that seem less convenient than where I am now, or they're in dodgy areas. It's not like I want to live anywhere particularly swanky - just that, when you find somewhere that looks like a nice apartment, and then it turns out to be in the area of London which is reported as having the highest murder rate, and when everyone who asks if it's an OK place to live is straight up told NO, it suddenly becomes less appealing. -_-
ACE-FLO
1st January 2010, 01:17 PM
Yeah, that commute is a killer man. I sometimes let entire trains just leave the platform, sometimes delaying my journey intentionally buy up to half hour, just so I can get a seat, and even then I end up being squashed between quasimodo and shrek :D Nah, seriously, it really does suck. my stop is Leytonstone on the central line, and beleive me when I say 'it feels like the whole of East London lives here' - everyone gets off at this stop, or the one before it which is called Leyton :D
just that, when you find somewhere that looks like a nice apartment, and then it turns out to be in the area of London which is reported as having the highest murder rate, and when everyone who asks if it's an OK place to live is straight up told NO, it suddenly becomes less appealing. -_-
A friend of mine is renting a one bed for around £680 PCM, its a nice flat but the crime rate is pain. In the 5 months he's lived in his flat (also in Leytonstone), his car has been broken into twice (nothing nicked though:?) we've chased muggers down the road once and 2 murders have taken placew, countless stabbings and a rape have occured in the ends... one of the murders was on the top of my road, and I live in a nice part, Upper Leytonstone (toff :D)
The only real reason to live here I guess is to be close to work, or to be entertained - or both...
...but being entertained costs money in the city... there's just too much temptation. Which is why i've chosen to keep a lower profile these last couple years. Gotta admit, Wipeout and the Zone (Rob you are a legend) have helped keep me occupied in my free, idle hours - otherwise, it's split commitments between work, family, GF and friends - and that split commitment is one helluva hard balance to achieve the older I get :? And the older I get, I realise that I need to put money away too. Got a lil stashed away but its clearly not enough to start out, build yer own nest etc. There's millions of us in the same hole, trying to find a way of getting on the property ladder, yet we have to slave over it - just to secure a roof. Slave - over - it...
Ya know SR, Say you had the deposit, and you had the job which paid good peas, and say with your skill of scrimp n save - you had to find a mortgage deal... where the hell would you start? The marketplace is saturated with a staggerring number of mortgage options from each lender... just figuring all this out takes work, and damn I don't think I could handle the stress on my own. I'd need to be married and let the wife handle that kinda thing :D kidding kidding :D but the question stands - is it becoming increasingly difficult to get on the property ladder? :?
KGB
1st January 2010, 01:45 PM
We bought a flat in 2000 for about £48,000. It was just at the right time as the property market exploded soon afterwards. We sold it a year later and made about £15,000 on it. We would have no chance now of starting up as that same flat is worth more than 3 times as much. Must be hard to find the money to get anything decent.
I would be tempted to live in the rougher parts just to get a start. Once you have a mortgage and are paying it, banks are more likely to lend you more, enabling you to make a move to somewhere a bit better.
Or move to the North. It's grim but it's cheaper (just). :P

I see young kids in crappy cars, pulling donuts in car parks - it aint that hard to skid a car in the snow is it? or what about the government - who fails to acknowledge that winter does indeed bring snow. When will they pull their fingers out and get the salt on the roads?
... Me, well - when in the snow, I walk like a hunchback, or like someone who has sharted (inbetween a schitt and a fart, involves wetwess :D), I find it helps with balance, lowers my centre of gravity so to speak... oh, shoot - Speaking of gravity makes me think of the taboo subject, not to be discussed here on this thread - so I'll be off then... ciao... :blarg

Universal adaptors should be more readily avaliable. I've got one for my PSP (it's Japanese) and the adaptor is at least twice the size of the actual plug. Aussie plugs are huuuge!

Hailstones we get in summer, sometimes associated with small tornados. One year we got golfball-sized hail twice in one week in two different parts of the metro area only a few miles apart. There were many cars going around town covered with golfball-sized dents all over the top surfaces. A couple of automobile dealers had almost their entire stock ruined this way.

If you had a younger brother (or just any younger relative) and found out they were dealing drugs, would you hand them into the Police immediately or would you try to help first/ask what's up?
Mate of mine just got handed up to the Police by his older brother...I feel a bit sorry for him but I don't know what I would have done if my younger bro was dealing and I found out about it.
Any thoughts?
blackwiggle
17th January 2010, 11:56 AM
The brother obviously did some soul searching and came up with what he thinks was the correct thing to do.
Better to get charged while he's young and get the whole sordid thing over with and hope he learns his lesson and doesn't re offend.
If the brother had let it go,who knows how bad the situation could of got.
yeldar2097
17th January 2010, 12:54 PM
Hmm true. Not quite sure how long he was soul searching for though. He was the one who found the drugs in the first place. Within about an hour he'd handed his bro up to the police.
Probs a good thing in the long run, like you say. He's a bit upset now though cos his mother is kicking him out of his house (cos she owns that block) and telling all his friends' parents that we aren't to contact him any more.
Idiot...
SaturnReturn
17th January 2010, 01:32 PM
I think it would depend heavily on what kind of drugs and how often, and the general behaviour of the person who was dealing, which would also affect my decision on whether I could believe them or not. But I'd definitely talk to them first and find out the details.
I don't think anyone would turn a family member into the police that quickly solely because they broke the law. There are lots of ways to do that and if everyone did it then pretty much everyone would have a criminal record of some kind.

Don't you hate it when you can't find the can opener and resort to opening a tin of spaghetti with a knife? OR have you ever tried eating spaghetti in the dark? (I found that difficult :D )
If you can't relate to that which I doubt you can, have you ever had a shower and then realised there are no clean towels around?
Yeah, I'm in a random attitude, don't ask.

If the knife were a Swiss Army Knife with a can opener, like most models of SAK, there would be no problem. I always use an SAK to open cans. Two kitchen can openers in a row have proven very inconsistent in their ability to open cans, and I always have an SAK in my pocket, anyway. Usually two or three different ones.

When the Dutchmen are chatting in the mother tongue I can understand bits of it. This is a combo of having been to Holland a few times and watched some Dutch-subbed English shows and having done A-level German. German does help with vocabulary, but I'm not sure about syntax. I think German and Dutch have similar rules about where the verb goes and stuff so probably does help there too. English, Dutch and German have a lot of similar words, I think Dutch has more in common with English and German than either of those two do with each other. It can also be confusing though, when you see a word which looks the same as English and it's actually something completely different. I still only know the odd word of Dutch anyway though.

i didn't know much about singapore, only that it was a small but quite prosperous place, amirite? constant summer sounds nice but despite the annoyance of slushy roads and freezing temps snow can be fun. still, we don't get particularly 'real' summers, know what i mean? we get some scorchers, but not many. we have plenty of flats here though, i think in the 60s it was decided that all boroughs should have council estates for those who couldn't afford houses. we do have open spaces though... are you guys thus more adept at using whatever space you have to its maximum potential? is there more of a community? i grew up in london and it's a big place, but from where i grew up and from my experience, there's not much community here.
are you at uni then? i hope you aced it all mate! make the most of it, life's short and a bitch and the rest of it. competition is good too though, builds your steel for later life. perhaps i'm lacking, but that's not a particularly interesting story for telling :beer

I tried the demo of Yakuza 3. I've not played a Yakuza game before and I struggled to even tell what kind of game it was supposed to be. It felt like Tekken's Force mode with a bit of an RPG element. It felt kind of dated and awkward to me; not really a good impression from the demo.

Don't open it up yourself unless you want to void your warrenty. Call sony first and see if they have a fix, but it is most likely a broken BD player. If you are still under warrenty then lucky, if not then unlucky, prepare to open your wallet.
I had my laser die, but apparently there is an issue with the eject mechanism as well because I was asked both by the customer service rep and on the form when sending my PS3 if there was a disc stuck in the console.

a simular incident occured to me months ago about a disc stuck on the console. After a few moments, i used a toothpick as a feeble attempt and it worked. But that was a rare and freaky incident and the toothpick idea was at the spur of the moment.

question to all the brain boxes on this site which i know are many...
im making sheet in microsoft excel 2003..
i would like to know the following
question one
on sheet one of my book i have a spread sheet the calculates my budget and gives my the answer in the box at the bottom of th sheet..so...
how can i get that answer to trasfer to sheet two in the same book automatically..
ie when sheet one is updated and answer changes and that info is automatically sent to page two without me having to do it..
question two (harder i think)
how do i make a macro button on a sheet that when pressed will generate a random number or a random word from a selection..
i would be most happy for any help on this
thankyou :)

@Jas:
1) You just type "=" in the cell where you want the answer to appear, and then click on the cell where it is calculated and then press enter.
2) Not sure, all I can suggest is that you go forth into the garden of Google and garner knowledge from the cornucopia that is the interweb :)

For the random number generator, you can place
=Rand()*(b-a)+a in a field where b is the largest number you want to generate and a is the smallest. If you want to make it an integer, use
int(expression)
so =int(Rand()*(b-a)+a)
You could then record a macro to recalculate this field by pressing f9 (i think?)
Set this macro to a button and bam

The stamp duty thing is supposed to make things easier for first time buyers, but I really don't think it's all that helpful. I actually think those with money to invest will be more likely to buy the cheap properties and there'll be less on the market. That's what happened with the last cut, all the cheap houses I had bookmarked vanished really quickly, not necessarily from investors buying them but I reckon it will be those people who have the funds ready and are waiting for a bargain that will snap them up.

i know that the budget covered more important things, but... 1% raise on fags, 2% raise on beer, spirits and wine and... 10% raise on cider?? what the ****?? makes no sense WHATSOEVER. we're not all sitting in parks with 3 litre bottles of white lightning accosting runners and birds and crying inside, and there's no reasoning behind the choice or the amount of the raise. i'm biased because i recently started drinking cider exclusively, at least when out, but really? **** them, i'm going to buy 30-40 ****ing bottles of kopparberg like a lunatic before the clock strikes sunday and then stash them at home. alternatively, i could cut down the amount i drink, but that's of course crazy talk

26th March 2010, 05:11 PM
Ah, it's stomach pains... strange actually, like a pressure pain, just over my lower left rib. Sometimes it gets so bad, I can't stand even the weight of my T'shirt on my lower rib, feels like a kilo weight on it :(
It all boils down to the fact that I am underweight, my BMI is pretty low atm. Truth be told - I live a hectic lifestyle, where I'm always missing meals and getting late nights. It doesn't help. But I stopped drinking a few years back (now I hardly touch alcohol, like maybe once a year...maybe), and I dont do any other drugs or anything, just the occasional cigarette (nasty).
Anyway, all my bodyparts are now confined in a smaller place than they need to be, hence the pressure type pain on my lower rib (left) just over my stomach.
Funny thing is, dependant on the strain - Smoking weed actually helps to alleviate the pain - and for that, I am grateful. Governments of the world, please wise up ffs ;)
EDIT: It benefitted me so that when I coul;dnt afford to buy it anymore, I learnt to grow it, and took care of my medical needs - and those of a few others. Like my GF who suffers from Endometriosis (it can kill), and she takes it in the form of a tincture which I made for her. ANd there's a few peeps - one in Hampshire and one in Epping, London, who suffer bad pains and I send it for free for mthese peeps. I understand what it is to be in pain and not have anyone understand the predicaments one faces when having to find meds that work. Standard. That's why I do it.
Still, if by some chance, I sorted myself out healthwise - I'd give it all up, totally - Coz quite frankly, I've got bigger fish to fry...

Just kidding, I don't think I take etc either. Probably one of my only vices is chocolate (damn you hay!).
I started buying chocolate raisins a while back and seem to be addicted. You can a big 200g bag from Tesco for 60-70p (varies between stores). It says one of the ingredients is icing sugar, but I'm sure it must be something stronger. I offered some to a workmate at one stage and the next day he asked me to get him a bad. He ate them all in one sitting, just like I always did at first. Seriously think there's something addictive in them. Also, as much as I try to pretend they're healthy healthy fruity fruit, they're actually like 70% sugar just for the raisins.:eek

I'm quite fond of Tesco's own brand confectioneries too, my favourite being the Tesco Value Roll, they have them at the local Tesco Metro for 13p each. You can tell when you eat it that its artificial, it has some weird uncakey consistency and is quite sticky, the cream in the centre is also a bit solid. I's still recommend them at that price though. :lol

You can get the totally over the top manufacturer who goes around suing people left right and center for the use of a word that has been registered as a brand name.
The worst example of this by far is a guy called Noel Lee who owns the MONSTER brand audio/visual cables company.
His numerous petty legal actions on other use of the word MONSTER have become the topic of many a thread in both Pro and consumer audio - visual forums, they have become so ridiculously and notoriously bad that lots of people now purposely avoid his products in protest.
Servers the greedy sod right.

@OneAVGNFan I didn't know you had anything like that in your post. I was just thinking generally about trademarks and whatnot since people were talking copyright. At SaturnReturn. When copyrighting a name, you have to approach "Companys House" and pay them to do a name check on your chosen name. Say you chose "AirLicker" and wanted to have that copyrighted for use as a clothing label, but you discovered that there was a Lunderette chain called AirLicker for example. That doesnt mean that you vant use the name AirLicker for your clothing label. The copyright will cover a sector of industry only, to protect you from the unfair use of your chosen name/label.
For example, in the naughties, I registered a name for an urban youth magazine and had it copyrighted too. However, at the time there was a British company who had already copyrighted my magazines initials (UGC) for use in another industry. I checked with companys house and was told that the copyright for UGC was available for use in paper media only and got given a list of companys in various industries with the same initials as my UGC copyright. They all had copyrights too, pertaining specifically to their industries...
Copyright law is complicated. I couldnt for example, open a Snooker club and call it Coca-Cola Snooker... some giants are just too big to take on! ;) Coca-Cola have a registered trade mark, meaning that the brand Coca-Cola is exclusive to them, and cannot be used in any other industry around the world, period. Giants indeed :D

Stood on the transparent glass deck on the 103rd floor of the Sears/Willis Tower in Chicago today o_O
Very high indeed. I think kgbizzle sent me a pic of something similar once. Anyone else been up?
Ive got a relative that has been up on the roof observation deck of Two World Trade Center back in the day, over 400 meters up. Higher than the Willis tower observation deck. windy a **** up there. He went in the observation floor in One World Trade Center too, i think that was on the 107th floor. I think he has some photos still somewhere, also has the best photos of midtown Manhattan from the Windows of the World restaurant. Shame it doesnt exists anymore.

I've only ever stood at the base of the WTC, looking up. Think I got a picture of that somewhere... even after so many years it's hard to believe they're gone. Wish I had gone up to the observation deck now. :/
Only big buildings/structures I've been up are the Eiffel Tower, Blackpool Tower and Statue of Liberty. :D Think I got a crushed/squashed 1p coin somewhere with a picture of the Blackpool Tower on it... you know, from those machines they have around the place there. :D

Yeah really weird to think they're gone. Looking at a comparison photo from 'then' and now they were MASSIVE. S'all a construction site now - I think they're rebuilding one of them and keeping one footprint as a memorial. Don't quote me on that, it's what the tour guide on the boat said and he was a bit cuckoo :dizzy

This is what it will look like;

1WTC and 4WTC are being constructed atm (building on the far left, and far right), along with the memorial and the transportation HUB. 2 and 3WTC are pending, due to financial issues.
Old WTC Complex looked better though.

Maybe it's that thing that they were/are doing sonthat people can choose which Internet browser they want to use?
Or did that already happen? Or was it scrapped? I haven't the foggiest.
