Well. Let's start with the good -great- things first. There's people there who deserve a MASSIVE round of applause; Luna, Dark_Phantom, Yeldar, JFTheBestFan, Woopzilla, Bart_Mdma, Texasalex, Zero3, Speedkang, Billychan... You guys offered us an outstanding show. So thank you so much, in the name of all the pilots who participated to this odyssey. Now here comes the quarter finals, Woop, Texas, Speedkang & Tiduch I wish you good luck & please, as usual... Vids of your Uber skillz would be awesome :g.

And now the depressing part of the post. Jabberjaw would say I'm once again too nice there. Anyway. Rezatron, Skrotos, Bazzman & Jasmin have one more week to redeem themselves. The calendar for quarter finals is set, so from july 18, Yeldar & Dark_Phantom will be free to arrange their semi-finals.

Rezatron vs Skrotos should happen this week, the guys had planned it last week but Rezatron didn't show up (unexpected smthing). Thing is Skrotos is on holidays atm, Xifdo told me he shld come back today or tomorrow so that should finally happens. Fingers crossed.

Regarding Bazzman vs Jasmin, I'm totally clueless. I believed first Bazzman telling me Jasmin was reluctant, now it's Jasmin who told me Bazzman was reluctant to play. Gah!
Anyway; as previously said, they have one more week to redeem themselves. The calendar for quarter finals is set, so from july 18, Yeldar & Dark_Phantom will be free to arrange their semi-finals.

Do you remember the first time you realized you really loved with WipEout? Was it with CoLD SToRAGE ringing in your ears, or Xpander pumping up your heart rate, or flying over Gare d’Europa finally ahead of the pack? Was it the moment you reached Zone 70, put down the controller, and then picked it up again because you just couldn’t stop playing such a beautiful and intense game?

The HD Cup is almost done, why not finish it up loving the game and having fun, instead of name-calling and scheming, playing hide-and-seek with matches or just plain out walking out on the Cup?

The type who quit on the HD Cup must be the same type who flee online rooms as soon as someone like onbac joins. Maybe instead of focusing on competition, focus on how much you love or loved the game. Let's be friends!! It doesn't matter who you're racing, in the end it's only you controlling the ship, remember?

There's hardly any matches left in the Cup, after the hugest WipEout tourney ever. All the legendary pilots: you'll be a legend one way or another, better make everybody remember you as legendary in a good way!!!

Well I think I'm not the right person for that, sadly. I can give a hand for sure if some people want to organise a sequel (this event is WZ/WA property btw), but I seriously can't repeat what I did last year. Tbh if I had more time to spare it would be totally different but I'm stuck in my real life most of the times, with a dumb job & a wife absolutely NOT videogames compatible. Plus the fact I'm not english speaking, I need ages to post something, making terrible mistakes & tbh I wasn't the best cup organiser ever, speaking of enthousiasm & so on. So as I said, if you guys need a raptor I'll be around lol.

Well, it's a pretty crushing defeat and my first matches slower than phantom in quite some time. I didn't seem to be able to do anything to catch up, so well done to texasalex there!

My phantom match was pretty close and I had some good chances to overtake at the hairpin but simply couldn't pull them through due to me missing the speed pads. >_<

I decided to stop at the game winning 4-0 because I've never been a fan of doing stuff for the sake of completion (and maybe because I'm not exactly a fan of 1v1 :g).

Thanks to texasalex for hosting my choice too because I wasn't capable of hosting myself right now with my connection. Good luck in the semi-finals and good luck to everyone else too. I'm hoping to see a champion very soon now. ;)

Definitely not the best conditions to play a quarter final against one of the fastest pilots on earth. I mean don't get me wrong Texas or Skrotos, you guys are deserving your victories, but judging by the results I believe our UK friends had some trouble wth their network. Not enough to completely ruin their chances, but enough I think to disturb them a bit. GAH. I know I've usually just remained quiet about any issue and focused on just my own matches, but... I really think deadlines should no longer be extended at this late stage in the tournament.

If there is a good reason such as your PS3 died or something (which mine just did one day after playing my match!), then logging into the zone via your PC/Mobile Phone/Local Library/Work shouldn't be that difficult in these times.

I think this tournament is more about just racing and winning... it's also to show a certain level of effort to get things done on time and remain in good contact with the community. I would especially hope the champion turned out to be someone who has shown good effort in both of these.

I know exactly where you're coming from DP, but at the same time, I'm positive kanar made the right choice in allowing different speed classes.

Anulpha is the hardest to take. That track is literally 100% luck weapons-wise. If you don't get the right pickups and the one in front gets bombs/mines, goodbye...

So yes, maybe the grand champ won't be a "purist" aka phantom "jedi reflexes" pilot. But he'll be an awesome winner anyway.

I dont know man. What about Bazzman. He got this far by playing with the best and he specialises in flash speed from what i can see. All the way he chooses flash races and his competition chooses phantom and it goes to the decider which is rapier. And he won his races fair and square and changeing the rules to suit the phantom pilots just seems wrong and unfair to him.

Kanar talks about this competition is to bring together all the pilots it doesnt matter if they are phantom or venom pilots. If they can win on a fair platfrom then they deserve to be given a fair chance. Changing the rules now is NOT fair. If the 7th race was always phantom to begin with then i dout he could have made it this far but the fact remains that the 7th track was rapier class anulpha pass.

Making Rapier as the 7th track was fair. the competition should stay that way in my opinon.

I dont know why flash pilots get so much stick. its a different way of playing this game and the barrel rolls are much harder on the slower speeds then they are on the faster speeds. On the faster speeds its all about the timing or you get stuck to the walls. It all balances out.

Sorry if i sounded a bit harsh but if you change the rules now it would be a joke and not a fair competiton.

Personally, regardless of the speed, having Anulpha Pass as the decider track is a bit iffy due to the overpass being such a respawn bonanza when someone gets any type of weapon there (barring leech beams), as even a cannon can send you off there. The lower path is seriously terrible, and anyone using it willingly is asking to lose.

So for a tournament, the luck factor there as a decider is a bit too much. I can't think of any other track where a hit would lead to a near 100% chance of a respawn on a stretch of the standard part of the course. Even Sol 2 respawns aren't guaranteed if you know to try and save yourself with a sideshift.

I think you should just leave it up to the players to come to a 'gentleman's agreement'.

Disclaimer: I'm a bit pissed.

2nd disclaimer: as the cup has reached the later stages, I wanted either DP, Jan or tiduch to win the whole thing, as they're all online friends of mine and great pilots. So I was rooting for DP in his match.

But I have to say I agree with ion_harvest and blackwiggle entirely, I don't like this phantom elitism one bit. If the next iteration of Wipeout was one, really f*cking fast speed, single races only, it would be a sh*t game in my opinion, and I'd have no interest in it.

The beauty of the Wipeout games (again in my opinion), especially Wipeout HD, is their diversity. Zone, Detonator, Eliminator, Zone Battle, races at all speed classes... I enjoy them all immensely. And I appreciate the skills of the players in all of those modes.

If you only enjoy doing phantom races then unlucky, but to denigrate venom/flash specialists as "not proper wipeout players", in my humble opinion, sucks balls. If the WOHD cup had been phantom SRs only, good luck getting 64 players, never mind 256.

Hm... while I do agree that flash and venom isnt just showboating and that it requires absolute precision and tremendous skill to master TTs and SLs in both there is also the point that woopzilla made that the decider is a bit of a luck based decider, I'd go for anulpha reverse as it is played more by people who play a lot (from what I've seen) than the fwd version and also it doesnt have the "death-in-one-shot"-overpass.

Also can we please drop the whole Venom vs Phatntom debate? We never get anywhere and people get mad, and this is absolutely not the place for it.

False !! I'm an almost exclusive phantom player and i have some top 10 on all classes. I didn't spent 1% of the time i spent on phantom TT/SL on the lower speed classes. Obviously doing all those nose down/up/sideshift BRs on slow classes is something which requires skills, but IMO any top 10 phantom pilot can reach a top ten in slower classes IF HE TAKES TIME FOR THAT GOAL ! Some already did (Yeldar as a known example). Items pick up is a major part on winning at phantom speed. It's multiplied on slower speed classes. The weapon hit's slowdown below phantom is huge and you lose easily several seconds and it's far more difficult to catch the first pilots than in phantom, because everyone can avoid walls, have decent lines and hit all the speedpads on slow classes. I was recently invited on rapier races by a french mate, we did some single races and 2 tournaments. On the first tournament i was hit by rockets/missiles or mines/bombs at almost each races and i lose with easily 3/4 seconds left. On the second tourny i was lucky with weapons and won all races with 5/6 seconds = 100% luck !! If rapier/flash/venom races require as much skills as phantom, why didn't any of the WIPEOUT HD CUP slow classes pilots CHOSEN NO WEAPON RACES ? :eek
That said The cup's rules allow slower classes and it's a good thing because it attracted more people on the event ! Will the winner of the cup be the best wipeout HD online pilot ? Probably because when you look at online races phantom are the lesser ones ;) ! Will he be the most skilled ? It's another story !

I just maintain that using missiles, rockets, mines, bombs or quakes requires less skills than piloting doing BRs and difficult tricks. Thank you for understanding Medusa. It's not as if I came in out of the blue, made some long rant and then just left. I clearly stated that I was disappointed and apologised for my whiny post. When you love HD as much as I do, you tend to take it a bit too seriously, thus you feel very disappointed when things like this happen.

DP, sorry you lost mate and I hear what you're saying but I think you really expressed all of your initial disappointment in that one post, which has now kicked off into the old speed debate, which I'm sooo sick of hearing and which I'm sure you never intended. This cup was never going to be fair, like Leungbok said, having weapons involved makes the whole thing a random luck event, except those of course who were brave enough to race unarmed. It's certainly not the final board I was expecting due to such random events.

But speed class should not be an issue, and I know Bazzman is a good pilot, he's been on my friends list lforever as we used to race rapier a lot back in the beginning, and he's improved so much in the past year that he deserves kudos for this win. Congrats Bazzman, you've done really well here :)

Now lets all shut up about this nonsense and give all our support to the people who have come so far :)

But like said Kanar and DP, it's my opinion, that's all, after if people playing low classes wants to be as considered as phantom fastest pilots by some elitists like me, it's naive, as said Jav. But i can appreciate good pilots on all classes (and all modes). Wipeout players should only care about having fun with the game, not looking at who's in front and who's behind on leaderboards.
And Saturn, yes it's a lot a matter of ego, pilots here must accept their weakenesses, not trying to find excuses when they lose or because their WR are less acclaimed as others. So DP, you lose against a pilot better than you at the moment of your match, because he follows the rules, and it was a good tactic to do it. The winner of the WIPEOUT HD CUP will totally deserve his win and will be able to be proud of his achievement ! :)

I'm a fan of any pilot who pulled hundreds of hours (I know it's a bit more for you eh eh, just like me) into this game anyway, who pushed the limits (in any game modes) further. He could pick race 7 out of a hat.

playlists of my hd cup races. All my choices were venom, and all but 2 green races are weapons off. I didn't drop a single of my choices... pure luck, eh.

If you make a single mistake on Venom, you'll lose if you're playing someone competent, luckily for me, there are only about 10-15 players in the world I'd consider competent at the class.

Also, before Saturn edited it out, you wrote most people say Phantom is harder - and it is, no doubt. However, the number of people that master Phantom is about zero, and even though I'd consider myself terrible at it; practically all of my Phantom SL times are just a fraction of a second off the #1 time.
Venom times can be separated by seconds between the #1 and #10, which indicates that skill is more necessary to win - if you can't nail a lap on Venom, you'll be left way behind; whereas Phantom almost purely relies on the player being consistent, not necessarily more skilled.

Ok ok, a few did played slow classes without weapons for the cup, it is totally at their credit !
About the difference of gap between top times on slow classes and phantom. It's not only a matter of consistency ! Try my boost BR on modesto fwd at venom speed and try it on phantom, like the triple BR on the left hander of chengou fwd. You just only have one millisecond to adjust your ship for the next trick, no place to rest on the whole lap, like it is on venom or flash. Speed on phantom makes all the track harder to race, not only the hard tricks and advanced BRs, you can lose a pb just by scratching a wall or taking a turn too wide, because as you said you compete for tenths or hundreths. Not finding a trick (off course a difficult one, no doubts about it) or BRs that will allows you to gain 1 second or more on your previous time at slow classes. I still maintain that phantom is harder, and i have a few good sl/tt's ranks on all classes (some top 10) despite i didn't spent lot of time on it.

That said, i repeat that the future winner of the cup will be the best, any speed class he may have chosen. The one with good lines, knowing the tricks, a good strategy and maybe some luck if weapons are involved (but it's full part of the sport) !
And yes, definitively, as Kanar said, videos are now required, we must see the champ on his final line !! :rock

I heard you Jabberjaw, & tbh I totally agree wth you. But fact is I would consider changing the rules now a bit unfair for our fantastic four. As it's said in this document, race 7 can be negociated between the 2 pilots if they want. Default settings (i.e no more than twice the same mode -single race weap, no weap or ZB-) are here just in case of broken down negociations.

Now about the endless debate lol. Ampli as you said, and that was our point : phantom is harder, period. We didn't imply more. And yes I'm not mastering it after more than 1500 hours lol, but I'm improving, days after days. Ayrton Senna began wth a kart, & died on a phantom track. That's just my own feeling, no more. Now we're all different, hopefully. And this diversity is what we wanted to show in this cup. Mission accomplished.

Really very good game, my heart bit very fast on Flash races.
bazzman didn't want Zone Battle races, I told him that he have a chance to win this, but he really didn't want to race these ZB.
Congratulations to bazzman for 4th place, he did really good job, defeat fast phantom pilots is not very easy for flash speed class player :)
And I got very rare badge (I think) during these races, you can see this on video :)

Hmmmm... becouse i expected bazzman to be a little better prepared for such battle for 3rd place. As for this speed, Tiduch had great advantage over his opponent, on speed on which i don't see him racing too often, and bazzman i heard that is a flash racer :blarg..................... ok, shoot me (sorry bazz if i hurt you)
