@q_dmc12: Just remember the motto, Losing is Fun!
And if you want some help, the wiki has a great tutorial http://dwarffortresswiki.net/index.p...first_fortress

@mic-dk: It's only my third ever fortress, the first two died from starvation and lack of water. The trouble now is getting used to sieges and goblin ambushes. It wasn't until recently that I found out that enemies could pass through doors.
I was having a lot of "Fun" then

    How fanboys see operating systems;

Here is my point of view.

Windows is for sissies. If ain't there is no button then the problem is
    unsolvable.

And Mac is for pussies, obviously. Most girls do have a Mac, fits their
shape 'n style more closely. But I've also recognized that more and more
guys do buy a Mac these days. Especially at university one can see how
some of those guys try to pimp their style by wearing / using a Mac.

Well, Linux is for those who wanna get a job done.

Oh please... I do Unix admining for a living, mostly Solaris but also a lot of linuxen. When I get home, I don't want to spend another 4 hours messing around with configfiles, codecs and packages with 4-deep dependencies just to view a youtube vid or log on my netbank. It ain't fun or interesting, it's tedious and smells like work.

Linux definitely has it's uses, but desktop computers isn't one of them.

You're comparing a heavy digger to a sportscar. Each get the job done, but if you need to win the Le Mans you don't race in a Komatsu PC300.

Linux on PCs (on x86 architectures) runs like nothing else. There is even Flash,
YouTube etc. on x86. A good distribution has most of the things already
configured. The situation is somewhat different on non-x86 (where Windows
isn't an option at all, lol). Anyways, I even got YouTube running on a PS3Linux
without flash. Adobe is just too lazy to port a ppc version of their Flash
implementation. So even if there is no support, no need to give up under Linux,
    another strength the system.

Desktop is the only part where Linux 'lacks' behind due to the way it has
evolved over time. But anyways, I don't think that any Windows can match a
fully-configured GNOME and / or KDE desktop system. No way. Best of all, Linux
is free (like in freedom). I don't know why I should pay 199,99 € to get Windows 7.
    Nice try, M$. xD

LOL, yeah, apparently you can have your digger any colour you like, as long as it's yellow.

Okay, let's dance My point isn't that linux (or unixen in general) is pointless, far from it. I wouldn't run real business application on anything else.

My point is that; this entry is written on a bogstandard Ubuntu 9.09/Gnome, with the pre-installed Firefox. I accepted all the auto-updates, and it checks every day, but it is still unable to show a youtube video. I could do it at one point, but somewhere in the process the codecs got screwed. Sure, I could fix by performing my magic incantations, but I really shouldn't have to.

My small, cheap netbook at home with Win XP never fails me in this way. It happily plays videos and show me my bankaccount - even after patches has been applied. I could manage all these smallish problems and issues if I really wanted, but I can only imagine what eg. my fahther would do. Well, I know what he would do; call me and let me do yet more sysadmin work in my already precious sparetime. Time that could be spent playing the game that shall not be named in this thread. Time I'll gladly pay for.

@ mic-dk: Yeah, they can enter through the wide passageway up the brook, that entrance is easily floodable to prevent unwanted entry.
There's also 5 (now 6) catapults placed further back behind the massive stockpile of random crap (ballista ammo and flung stones can pass through fortifications )

Ooh, yeah thats pretty sweet with those catapults
I'll admit I can't quite figure out how you get the caravans inside - they enter from the south, running north towards your depot? Also, are your forges magma powered? I see a lot of bars lying around

This morning I chatted with a friend of mine about his latest adventure:
http://mkv25.net/dfma/map-7659-metalsoothe - he actually killed a dragon with the traps on lvl 15

I'm so playing DF over christmas!

The wagons enter along the brook, then go up the floodable passageway, up the 3-wide ramps, across the top of the wall, and down again on the other side (this prevents the whole fortress from being flooded when the passageway gets flooded)

He killed a dragon with traps? XD

I have over 50 war dogs assigned to a single hammerdwarf, who makes up his own military unit...
he's permanently outside, as it takes too long for all the dogs to get through the narrow passageways XD

Plasma TVs make my head throb just like I've got the beginnings of a headache going on.
LCD TVs don't have this effect.

    Something I realised today

    Default RIP Rashid Aziz

Last night, my first and oldest friend, Rashid passed away. He was diagnosed with cancer. I'm not feeling too great tbh, but my pain/loss is nothing compared to the loss/pain his dear parents, family and wife are feeling.

Rashid was a good man, with no vices or bad habits. An only son, he was the bread winner for the family... full of smiles, full of love and life, he was a brother I will always miss.

I never got to tell him some things, like how dear he is to me, or how much love I have for him... I believe in God, and just know in my heart that he is in a good place.

I'm in a bad way atm. sorry

Sorry to hear that ACE. He sounds like a great guy. Cancer can affect anyone, no matter who they are, where they're from, how healthy they are, or how old they are. It's a horrible thing and I really hope all the research that is being done in the field pays off some day. Too many good people are lost to it.
