How to play online WiFi?

I'd feel like an idiot if this thread had already been brought up, which I think I distinctivily remember, but I couldn't find it... HONEST!!!!!!! Ok, so, how does the whole "playing online" thingy work... I've got online to the downloads section with a Wireless router... but I've already got all the downloads for my version!!! I just want to play online... do I just go to multiplayer as if to play another person in the room with me on wifi, or is it in the downloads section that you play online... I just don't know... is their something more I need?
