I feel your pain, mate. :( I'm not that consistent as I used to be on Zone; perfect laps are getting trickier to nail.
There's light at the end of the tunnel I think. One high score PB so far, and two high zone PBs. I've got over the initial "Oh f**k it I can't do this anymore", and now I've got that familiar itch to be Zoning all the time :g

Just done my first few runs. I think it's gonna be a case of a maximum of two attempts on each track as I have a lot of other stuff to do this week. Not looking too bad, but I doubt I'll see any world beating runs this end...

Making incremental improvements on each track. Apart from Anulpha, which can go to hell. When this round is finished I'd like somebody to tell me what I'm doing wrong on that track, because I'm stumped.

Laser0pz said a few posts back that his TV broke or something like that.[if you have a PC monitor that accepts HDMI plug your PS3 into that]
I don't know what has happened to CJ4717, he hasn't answered my friends request that was sent before round 2, he told me that he had to wait till the rest of his family had gone to bed before he could hook up his PS3 online.

I don't remember saying that :?. The game froze when I was playing on Übermall, that's all (and that rhymed!). I just keep on forgetting to submit times, which is really bad of me considering I signed up for this in the first place :(. I was looking forward to Zoning on AP since I almost always play Zone Mode, and it's always on that map.
No times, Colonel. I kinda screwed up on this one :/, and I'm on holiday for the whole of next week, so I can't do the Speed Laps.
Group 8: I can do the Eliminator as long as it's tomorrow since I'm leaving for the Coromandel on Sunday and I'm not getting back until the 20th. In that case, would we be able to do the Zone Battle on the Sunday night?
blackwiggle
10th January 2013, 08:45 PM
Well Hellfire has yet to announce what is required to complete the eliminator round, but in theory I can participate tomorrow if we know what tracks etc, but we need what's left of this group to be able to do so as well.....it seems rather pointless having a eliminator round with just 2 or 3, even though I think I have played Eliminator for grand total of 5 times, ever.
I'd start sending PSN message to the others now if I were you, to get the ball rolling.
Yes we can do Zone Battle on the 20th.
Why don't you do a few speed laps of each track and each speed NOW, take photos of the times and keep the photos on a USB stick, then you have at least got something to submit come speed lap round.
I dont's think Ace3000 and theconzio, both in Perth WA, will be going anywhere this weekend, there's a Cyclone about to hit them.

... so with Laser0pz out of this round too, it's just theconzio and blackwiggle. I'll send your points over to Hellfire shortly.
Charlie, may I suggest that if groups are short of players this weekend for the Elims, that the target is lowered? Personally I'm relishing the prospect of eight 500 point Elims, nobody's fluking 500 points and it'll be an awesome session... but if there were only a couple of people that would be torturous. I don't tend to set it over 240 - 260 if there are only a couple of people.
Edit - oh but blackwiggle, Elims with just 2 or 3 of you can be fun, very cat and mouse rather than the carnage of a full room.
Hellfire_WZ
10th January 2013, 10:08 PM
Yeah, that's not a bad idea. Let's say any group competing with four or fewer players can negotiate their own score target, as long as it is consistent across all races.

[QUOTE=TheConzio;224934]Wow, a projector with Wipeout must be awesome !
It is awesome, I played HD/FURY almost exclusively for nearly 2 years through a PJ.. the screen is 2.2m across.
I think I have turned it on once since I bought the 46" Sony 3D TV back at the end of April, that sits under the motorized drop down screen.[I did all my Zone PB's in 3D by the way]
Here's an old thread where we we talking what everybody was play HD on ... see post #154 for some old photos of my setup.
http://www.wipeoutzone.com/forum/showthread.php?6418-What-do-you-play-WipEout-HD-on/page16&highlight=what%27s+your+gaming+setup
I chopped that media center down so it only has the bottom part, the surround amp changed to a new Yamaha 11.2 channel job, and the old 4:3 TV was replaced with a Sony 46" 3D model, all switching units got scrapped as everything now runs via HDMI.
I press one button on a selected source and everything else starts up automatically as I have programmed it to .... I'm a bit of a old tech head if you haven't guessed already.
Speakers are still the same, Main fronts Harbeth SHL5's and the rest are B&W, I don't use the subwoofer anymore as it's just overkill and annoys the crap out of the neighbors.
Back on topic: Isn't 6pm WA time midnight NZ time?
I would of thought that was a bit late for the NZ guys, as last time we raced at 4pm WA time.
I'm fine with whatever time you guys in NZ and WA decide on, as it doesn't really effect me as I'm smack bang in the middle of a 5 hour time difference.

Consider each block of four races to be a mini-tournament, so give out normal ranking points according to position for each race. Then add them all up at the end of each block to get the position for the block.

By the way, there's one factor I hadn't accounted for - what happens if we have a points draw at the end of the tournament! :eek
What I'll say is the deciding factor will be whoever has the higher numer of 8-point finishes over the whole tournament (going down accordingly if this is also drawn)

Guys, in group three. Got an appointment tonight in the hospital for me, I`m having problems with my skin, because, everytime I accidentally bumped a spot, then it`s starts bleeding alot but it took me nearly 30 mins to stop the blood flow. Now it`s delicate and fear to touch in case it might go off again. That is the third time it happened since Thursday night.
I`m starting to get pissed off with it but I just want it fixed before anything further.
So, if I`m not there by 8pm?, just go without me. Seriously, I`m really sorry about that.

Guys, I'm sorry about the 500 target, that was a really stupid decision. If anyone has still to play for whatever reason, please feel free to drop the target to 300 or whatever you think is appropriate within your group.
And on another note, I've been thinking about how this tournament is panning out regarding online meetings, and I'm really not sure this format was a good idea. It seemed like it at the time, having a month-long tournament spanning all game modes, but looking at all the issues regarding organising so many meetings and people dropping out left right and centre for reasons understandably beyond their control (or just not f*cking showing up at all)... I have to be honest here, I'm really reluctant to organise another tournament like this in the future, it really doesn't seem to be working from my point of view...

I'm sad to hear you say this Charlie, and it's unfortunate that there are loads of drop-outs. Obviously those with issues and those who just decide not to show up. Regardless of all the problems that keep arising, I really appreciate the effort you have went to here. The level of competition is intense, and it's really rekindled my love for WipEout (even with that Elim round of doom I just had), I'm not one of the 'big players' in the WipEout world but things like this really do make me realize that this game is easily still where it's at!

500 is a high target for the lower speed classes IMHO. The Elims were by far the longest and most pain staking event so far. I thought the Elims may have been 2 tracks per speed class with a target of 300 - 500 depending. I love Elims, I love high point Elims, so this wasn't so much of an issue for me ^_^ Aside the DC issues with the Elims, I had a blast (literally :P) yesterday.
The format is a great idea IMHO. The problems of people being no shows etc cant be helped really. I love the way this has gone on through out the month and I'm sure plenty others feel the same way. I appreciate the effort that you and all the people participating have put in with this. The idea was ambitious and risky. There is nothing wrong with that. For events like this, maybe keep note of the people who have stuck it out and the ones who have shown up for it and maybe limit to the more reliable ones to avoid issues of no shows etc. It's a real shame that this has happened. I'd love to do another tourney like this again, I'd be well gutted if it didn't happen but I understand where you're coming from.

TBH, if I'd anticipated dealing with a suicide, a workmate breaking bones, friends moving away, all in about 2 weeks, no way in hell would I have joined this tourny.
Also, while I really do think putting everybody in a similar time zone is a grand idea - for people with screwed up lives who work night shifts (me), trying to meet up with people who live normal lives (even on the same bleeding continent!) is a bit more difficult.
Still this tourny was a great idea, is great fun, and I don't see why it shouldn't be considered a success considering how compactly it is being played (you've got x# of days, do it, move on). I'm having fun when I can make it happen. Race on, me hearties! :twisted

Well for me, this tournament has rekindled a love for a old flame.
I hadn't played Wipeout for ages, mainly because I thought I had pretty much played it to death over the previous 3 years.
The Time Trial I found I was slow getting into, but come the first online tournament it brought back fond memories of weekend long AVALON events, where it didn't matter what timezone you were in, at least a few wipeoutzone and ARENA players would be online, plus great banter in the chat rooms.
Sure this tournament has had some drop outs, it was inevitable, it always happens.
It's always disappointing when this happens.
I don't know if it has been people not realizing what they had promised to commit to, or that those that seemed to have dropped out first are the ones that heard about the tournament via other means than perusing the Zone or Arena pages.
It's all very well reading a Facebook page while commuting while on your mobile, and deciding, that sounds cool I'll be in that .... then come the crunch of "Turning UP" ... these tend to be the same people that don't turn up.
I'm from a different era, nearly 2 generations from the current one, one where you always try not to let people down, especially when it's a friend who you know has put a lot of time and effort into something that they thought would bring some joy into your lives.
Which this tournament has for me.
So it's a success as far as I'm concerned Hellfire.:rock
Big UP's for organizing it . :+ :clap :rock
Now for the speed lap round.
I haven't looked at the tracks yet ...... hopefully I can beat a PB like the 6 I did in Zone.:nod

I think the big problem I'm seeing is the large number of windows in which to compete. I love it, Hellfire. I just love it. I obviously can't race pilots such as SoA_Booney or Liod19 (not yet!), but I'm having so much fun despite some real poor driving by my side. And I'm learning some things too. I couldn't ask more, actually.
Of course, it is not easy to set an event as huge as this. And, as I was joking pages ago, my wife is not entirely happy of my countless hours of zones and time trials. Maybe you're right, maybe it should've been shorter than a month, because the schedule is impressive. You, and all the event managers, are going through a great deal of patience for it, and the community should be grateful to say the least.
I say keep going. So far it's going pretty well, looking at the results I see good competition.
Plus, I need another tournament. I'm improving, I want to get back to some of Rapier Racer's plasmas!

RE: Question
What is the BSB technique?
It was a technique that was available to multiple pre boost before hitting the start line of a speed lap [it involved Turboing, BRing and getting a second Turbo and using it all before hitting the start line of a lap], thus giving the pilot [Who could pull it off] a similar equivalent to a extra Turbo boost.
It was pure ingenuity that thought of the process, I'm not 100% sure, but I'm pretty sure it was Piraphiac from Wipeout Arena that first discovered the way to do it, then Leungbok got PSN messaged about it [Those two have always ben in comp with WR TT and SL's,] I, and several other diehard wipeout pilots at the time, got Youtubed private messages with video evidence on how to do it, then it was on for young and old who could beat the world record for each track.
It wasn't long before the chant of "Cheating" reared it's ugly head.
Much discussion both at this forum and at Wipeout Arena went on at the time regarding the legality of times achieved via those that were able to poll off the maneuver.
It ended up with Studio Liverpool considering it such a problem that it recoded the game so a update made it impossible to do it.
Liger Inuzuka
14th January 2013, 10:51 AM
Every organization is not without its hiccups or faults, but overall I think this tournament is well organized. It's enjoyable and brought many racers together all fans of the Wipeout. If you don't make a tournament in the future like this one, perhaps a smaller one would be easier to manage but both would be welcomed with open arms surely.

Actually it's still pretty easy to do it, but that's neither here nor there. For something like Omnium it's only fair that it's banned.

It's not the same as the original BSB, as you could press the START button to reset the lap in the original version.
That's what SL took out of the equation ... no longer able to do it.
Just as well ...it caused a hell of a lot of fallout at the time, I'd hate for old arguments to resurface and start off again.:|

Don't be too disheartened Charlie the tournament was an awesome idea. I think a large part of the problem like blackwiggle mentioned is maybe people who aren't members of Wipeoutzone or Wipeout Arena seeing something flash up on Facebook or twitter and commit without fully knowing all the details or just not bothering as they aren't a vested member of the Wipeout community as such. I'm not trying to sound elitest in any way, just what I think.
Maybe future tournaments could be slightly smaller scale ? Maybe only a singular game mode or maybe 2. Omnium is demanding, but you know, its all there in black and white when you sign up .

Yeah that's absolutely fine, it's the standard technique for Speed Laps. Nobody's doing BSB by mistake, it takes a fair amount of practice to get right. I've never used it for any of my times, but I did play around with it for a bit, just to see what all the fuss was about.

As a matter of principle-and to improve my laps on Campaign mode-I got in the habit of absorbing my boost and relying on BRs and honing my side-shift skills. It made me learn the tracks better.

I'll be available on Saturday. I would prefer around 12:30/1:00pm GMT, since the last online round lasted very long. The sooner the better, for me.

@GROUP 8: Let's schedule our times for Round 6, the Zone Battle.
May I suggest a time and date of Saturday, 3:30pm Perth time [GMT+8], for convenience of Lazer0pz, as he wasn't able to participate in the final Eliminator race.
Please feel free to suggest different times/dates, as I am just suggesting the time.

I sent my ss results in, all pretty rushed attempts. Every now and then I reach a point where I'm absolutely sick of this game and this point is now. So I wasn't really motivated to do my speed laps. :(
Anyway, 3.30 is fine with me. 12.30 would be a bit too early indeed.

Just a reminder for Group 7, as per my PM last weekend, our Round 6 meeting is at 7.00pm GMT this Saturday. I'll send PSN reminders this evening as well. Should be a cracking session this weekend, nothing gets the heart racing like Zone Battle :g

I don't want it to drag out like it did last time either so I'm looking to be setting up and starting each race as soon as I can. Hopefully connection issues won't be such a problem this time.
Okay it looks like 4 out of our 7 are good for a Saturday 3.30pm GMT start, just waiting to hear from the rest of the group.

For fun I have been trying to beat Cheng Rev SL on Flash, just stuck at 28.47s - can't get nowhere near my PB, BOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! :)
Colonel
17th January 2013, 01:34 PM
Me neither John. Most of my others I've set a new PB without too much fuss, but Chenghou Rev my ghost just runs away at the shortcut, and I spend the rest of the lap trying to reign him in. Can't get within half a second of my record here, and I've given up trying. Sol 2 at Phantom has been my other frustrating one, just got Vineta Rev left tonight and I'm done.
I have to say it's been better than I expected, although I'm hardly setting the record tables on fire.

Alrighty, I'm gonna go and set my Speed Lap times now. It's gonna be a rushed job again, due to university work, so probably only 5-10 laps on each track.

My barrel roll thumb is hurting and the left analog stick on the wireless controller sounds a little bit weird. I've never done speed laps (except for the campaign modes) and now I see everything depends on the knowledge where to use the turbo and where to barrel roll.
I wish Wipeout had some kind of option to generate tracks (for an event) randomly because it would suppress memorising every corner and would show the real skill of the pilots. :p
Okay, round 6 is near! :)

Believe it or not, there is a tie in one of the races in Group 7! In the very unlikely event this happens, whoever hit the most speed pads will take precedence. Otherwise, just share the points

Novide and I? I noticed it when I finished the lap, and check this out - it's the second time we've drawn. We also drew in Round 1 on a Time Trial, and our fastest lap was only .01 apart, otherwise it was going to SPs. Peas in a pod I'm telling you :)

Well the PSN is still down here in OZ.
I checked the Playstation forum and they have posted that it will hopefully be back in operation some time today, but no specific time frame has been given.
So since sending PSN messages are out for the moment, I suppose something should be sorted here regarding our groups tournament staring time, that's if and when the PSN is back up.
What time tomorrow does group 8 want to meet up for the Zone Battle round?
4pm or 6pm AWST?
I suppose to get everybody racing it will be up to what time Laser0 in NZ can be online, he said he should be back from holiday tomorrow.
TheConzio
19th January 2013, 03:55 AM

Crap, I forgot, do the zone battle ships retain their original statistics (i.e 80 speed, 95 thrust, 90 handling and 80 shield for AG Sys) or are they like the standard zone ships where they are all at 100?

Like Zone ships.

Has there been a change of plans or was this morning not an official plan?
Just wondering. Awfully silent on PSN.

Or, like me, do you keep getting signed out of PSN! Good grief, what else could go wrong? (...and from the sky, a house falls on Medusa)

I guess PSN is down. Wish I'd thought of that before troubleshooting my router for 2 hrs.

That is a load of bull kiTTun, I got online right after you signed off. For group 1, since I haven't heard from Defjukie, I have no idea when we are going to meet up, as of now I'm sticking to our old standard of 3pm EST. So I'll be online for that.

Apologies to Group 7 for the very short notice, but I won't be able to make it tonight. :| Something's popped up and I have to head out. I'll still appear online, but just ignore it, it's my brother playing while I'm out (he's got sick and tired of EA's servers on FIFA 13).
