I fancied doing some Zone this evening, and I checked the rankings site to see what I hadn't done in a while. I was shocked to see that I've only set one PB in 7 months, and I've got tracks that I haven't touched in over a year and a half. So I've resolved to do something about this. I'm setting myself the target of beating every one of my scores before Christmas. Starting with the oldest record (Corridon 12) tonight.

This will of course mean I'll be online less for the next few weeks, but I'll still have the odd session, plus any special events. Anyway, thought I'd let you all know about my mission, wish me luck :)

EDIT ... oh, and if anybody cares to join me in my mission, you'd be more than welcome. We could even have a little competition on particular tracks, who knows?

One thing I love about Zone is how you can easily track your progress. I remember the first time I made it to Super Zen and Subsonic. Then the first time I made it to Mach 1. Then the first time I reached Supersonic. Once I reached Supersonic, I considered Super Zen to be the first speed class where I'd probably sustain my first bit of damage. Now I can often make it to Mach 1 without taking any damage. And then what used to be an amazing achievement sometime in the past eventually became par for the course. And then that achievement suddenly becomes a disappointment later on. For example, I used to be excited when I reached Zone 80. Now, the only time I'll die at Zone 80 is if my son grabs the joystick while I'm playing. Then a good game was Zone 90-95ish, with a few 80s stuck in there. Then I hit Zone 100 for the first time and anything under Zone 90 was a disappointment. Then I hit Zone 110, so clearing Zone 100 was considered par for the course.

Now a good game for me is Zone 115. I've passed Zone 115 a few times, and Zone 120 once. But if I don't even make it to Zone 110, the game is considered a disappointment. Now my number of perfect zones is higher than the total number of zones I'd clear in the past in a "good game." My usual game now on Syncopia is about 115/85 and 330,000 points or so. There was a time when Zone 85 would be considered a high game, but not anymore!

I've also found myself really liking some of the anti-Zone tracks, such as Modesto Heights reverse and Sebenco Climb reverse. Sure, it's doomsday once I reach Zone 35 or so, but it's a lot of fun and I'm finding that these tracks really force me to become a better pilot with more perfect laps. I still can't race Ubermall (forward or backwards) to save my life though.

LONG LIVE ZONE!!!

The hardest tracks are my favourites for Zone for two reasons - 1) you get more of a sensation of speed and urgency and 2) you won't spend 15 minutes doing it, then make a few silly mistakes and ruin your score. I'm currently doing Sol 2 but it's so frustrating, it's the dodgy BR off the lip for the first few laps. Restart, restart, restart.

i'm racing cockpit view zonemode, and i noticed that most top players use the other views, so I was wondering what is the highest zone any one ever did in a cockpit view, and then i mean the entire race!
I managed to get to zone 90 on V-K and aiming for 100! if some got some vids of 90+ cockpit that would be cool!

haha zzonkmiles i have the same thing, funny to read you story, my records are not as high as yours but the way to it seems very simular, however 9/10 times i dont want to race serieus for the first 45 zones or so, while i'm racing i'm watching a animee or brouwsing on my second monitor... after 45 i need to use my focuse or ill die. while at the begining of wipeout hd zone lvl 45 was inposible.

I play more for getting high zone numbers then high scores

Internal is much more fun. My highest internal is 149. Not really worth attention because:
1. Syncopia --> Noob
2. I fail at perfect zone with internal
3. I have not tried internal zone with patch 2.51, which of course would make a much higher zone

Still, way more fun :g

ZixXer
5th January 2013, 11:45 PM
cool, i see i got quite a challange ahead!
do you have a vid? of that awsomeness?

syncopia is a easyer track i have to agrea but my record there is way lower because i never play that onepretty mutch only v-k because i like the flow of the track not to wide not to narrow and only one anoying roof that i keep bumping into XD
I dont know about patch differences, so maby my records suck because there set with 2.5 stuff ah well as long as i have alot of fun.

I have to agee internal is mutch more fun because it feels so mutch better when you master it! external was alot easyer for me to beat zico with (all the wipeouts i played external and hd made me go cockpit because of the feeling thats so damm good in there)

You got to Zone 90 at Vineta K?!? With internal view?!? I'm not sure but I think that counts as having super powers, you might want to consider fighting crime or something.

6th January 2013, 01:31 PM
haha nope its just practise makes perfect.
so need more practise to get to my aimed 100, but thats a long road for a 130 sec of extra travel time. but i'm getting used to the super sonic colors now.
they dont freak me out if i enter it anymore like: OMG i managed to get ss!! whooh. its more like ZixXer keep your cool you have a long way to go still KEEP YOU COOL DAMIT AAH DEAD!

but if i remember corect you had some very awsome records as well. and i'm only good in that track (i did get platium thropy so i'm not that bad) but super powers... no

thanks for the nice message :D

On Syncopia but ah it's still nice. I can change the colours with the zone glitch maybe make it more interesting?

I am tempted to try and get Zone 50 in Sebenco Climb in internal view, my best record on that so far is 41, I feel the goal is within reach but it'll be a tough mountain to climb! :P

It certainly helped take a good line in the first two-three corners, and as of just now (6 attempts today, and around 5-10 over previous times) I have finally achieved my goal!

Managed to scrape past 51 before the ordeal was done, but I am so glad i've done it, the footage has been recorded as well and will be up as soon as possible :D

I know this is an old debate, and one where I've always been on the fence, but the recent Zone Round in the Omnium tournament settled it for me...

There is a difference in the handling between different Zone ships. I swear blind there is, and not just a small difference, a massive one. So far I've only tried direct comparisons on the faster tracks, such as the Pure Four. I tried a couple of them in the Feisar, when I reached Supersonic the ship became so twitchy it was uncontrollable, and when I got into trouble I'd quickly end up pinballing around the track.

A second attempt on each track in the Goteki 45 was a completely different story. It feels much heavier, and as a result much more stable. At higher speeds on the Pure Four, it was easy to carve stright lines through the track, and if I did end up in trouble, it was so much easier to correct it.

So there's my two pence. In my opinion, a heavier ship such as G-45, Auricom or Triakis is much better for Zone than something lightweight like a Feisar. At least for the faster tracks anyway. As we didn't do any technical tracks I can't comment on them, but I'll have a play with them soon and report back.

I would of course welcome any opinion to the contrary (albeit in that patronising way when you know you're right).

I'm bumping this thread because I didn't want to start a new one. My question is, how come so many people play single races, tournaments and eliminator battles online, but zone battle rooms are so uncommon? It's a shame because I probably enjoy zone and zone battle the most, but often can't find anyone to play with. Is it because there aren't any powerups? Is it because it is really hard (especially if the target is 55)? Is it because the zone battles take too long? What gives? I'd take a four-person zone battle over a four-person eliminator battle anyday!

Same reason WipEout has always had more of a cult following than being popular, same reason 2048 turned out the way it did. The average gamer, the majority, the general populous, the people.
In other words every braindead pleb who enjoys tagging along, tagging himself, an eternal prefix of hashtags. Those people

Zone Battle is a challenge AND there are no weapons, therefore it is boring and a waste of your and everyone else's time.
Play CoD, Everyone loves CoD, hell, that racer Blur even used the prestige system for online play.
Don't have CoD? Play eliminator.

Errrr, I don't think zone battle is not played because it's too challenging. Surely everyone agrees that getting used to ZB takes a lot less time than getting used to racing ? Well that's my personal experience anyway. You can't really say it's challenging online either, considering how few games are hosted. If it's not from people I know, most of the ZB rooms are hosted by hurr-durr noobs who put some stupid setup like syncopia @30 or something. Reminds me of that one time when that guy set up a Sebenco Climb @40 to scare me off of the room... that was cute.
Though the lack and weapons+ the fact it's not a mainstream mode (ie something major in the offline campaign or the reason why you buy the game to begin with) explains the lack of popularity methinks.

I don't think they're too long. I don't remember when the zone decreasing thing start, but it's at a reasonable time imo. Definitely not too hard to get to 55. On any clear track that's easily done under the time limit. If anything, I'd say it's a lot easier than classical racing or zone : you can recover from mistakes much more easily in general (wall damage is negligible, health easily restored, etc) and goals more straightforward (all you have to do is chase around speed pads, health management for BRs is inexistant, position of others on the track and lines are mostly irrelevant).

I just think that people mostly play the campaign, do a couple of ZB against the retarded AI (in retarded settings to top it off. The hardest is what, MH @40 maybe ?), dismiss it as a bogus bonus mode designed to look pretty alongside detonator (which is waaaaaay harder to master imho), and get back to the racing mode.

I'll be able to play some Wipeout starting september, so if you have a plan to manipulate people into playing ZB by then, do enact it^^

Colonel

I still play ZB regularly Denton, but getting a room going can be torturous. I usually set it up, then pgo on the laptop for a while until a player or two come along. If after 5-10 minutes nobody arrives, I'll usually leave and hoin a race / elim room. So yeah, it's underplayed to say the least.

A few weeks ago, one person on my friend list and I were having some 1 on 1 zone battles. They were INTENSE. One time on Anulpha Pass Reverse, we both boosted past 55 at the same time, but the game gave me the victory because I was at 55.4 while the other person was at 55.0. We also had some close ones on Modesto Heights Reverse, including a 55.0 to 54.7 finish. The ONLY thing about zone battle I don't like is how easy it is to lose a perfect lap because of being bumped by other ships, especially on the first lap.

As for regular zone mode, my Syncopia scores continue to gradually increase. My top 5 personal scores now are all higher than 360,000 points with finishes better than 115/90. Today I raced a 118/93 that I recorded and will upload to YouTube. I'm also having a lot of fun with Sebenco Climb Reverse and Modesto Heights Reverse. I am happy to play 1 on 1 zone battles because if there are 5 of us in the room, it can get pretty crazy pretty fast with all those zone barriers on the track. But I would take a zone battle over a tournament or 1 on 1 eliminator anyday!

Zzonkmiles
15th October 2013, 02:49 AM
I finally cracked the 400,000 point barrier on Syncopia tonight. I had a 122/100 run with 75 total laps and 56 perfect laps. I had about 80 ship energy at Zone 112 when one mistake led to HUGE damage. My highest zone ever is 127, but I value points over total zones because perfect zones and perfect laps are what it takes in order to make it to higher zones with your ship intact. Anyway, my quest to make it to Zone 200 before Super Ryuga continues! Watch out, Ryuga! :)

Another track I love zoning on is Anulpha Pass reverse. I'm nowhere near as good on that track as I am on Syncopia, but it's still a lot of fun.

I haven't played Zone mode for loong time, especially in Syncopia, but now I'm back :D :D a challenge!!

Zzonkmiles, this is a challenge!! Reach Zone 200 before you now is my main target! :) :P

Ryuga! If we are online at the same time, I'll open a Zone Battle room. Actually, that mode works best when there aren't so many people playing it because the barriers can be KILLERS when they are all over the track!

I also played Zone again a few days ago and opened with 87 perfect zones on Syncopia, which is a personal best. But the game ended up being a disappointment because I flamed out at Zone 117. Right now, my goal is to hit Zone 130. I know you're about 50 zones ahead of me, so it'll take a little time to catch you. But let it be known that I am trying! It appears that I am ranked #29 worldwide on Syncopia, but that's not good enough!

I think my biggest problem with Zone that's holding me back is the fact that I don't use sideshifts. It seems unnatural for me to use sideshifts in Zone, but I bet they could really help me if I could use them correctly!

Ryuga/FMask, do you have the ability to record your zone sessions? I would LOVE to see how fast Zone 180 is. That is insane. I mean, even at Zone 90, it's easy to get careless and lose a lot of energy. Even though it is my stated goal to reach Zone 200 before you do, I think the only way this can happen is for your PS3 controllers to inexplicably break. Impressive indeed.

Keep zoning! It really is my favorite game mode. :-)

XxSuperRyugaxX

Zzonkmiles
18th January 2014, 01:06 AM
I just had an INCREDIBLE Zone session on Syncopia just now. I opened with 90 perfect zones. 90 PERFECT ZONES. In other words, I made it up to Zone 91 before I hit the wall for the first time. My previous best was no damage until Zone 88. Anyway, I turned that into a 123/102 run worth almost 414,000 points. Sadly I don't have video, but I do have a picture. I passed two more people in the worldwide rankings, so I'm #29 according to the online stats. My new target is Doriett (who is on my friend list!). I'm only 15,000 points behind you, friend, so you better practice!

(And of course, my ULTIMATE goal is to reach Zone 200 before Super Ryuga does!)

My progress with Zone has been funny. I can't seem to make it past Zone 125 (I think I did maybe twice), but I am getting a higher number of perfect zones now. My perfect zones used to be in the mid-90s, but now I am getting perfect zones of 100 or more now. That's encouraging. But I can only squeeze so many more points out of 120-125 zones. So I need to try and hit 130 or so next.

Screw Zico. I LOVE ZONE!!!!

Okay, I have to complain a little. Syncopia is my favorite track to zone on, but I also really enjoy Anulpha Pass reverse. So I had a great run going when I hit Supersonic. I've only hit it about 4 or 5 times before, but would crash out at maybe Zone 76. But this time I had a lot of ship energy left. But when Supersonic came and the colors switched, I started crashing into EVERYTHING because I COULD NOT SEE THE TRACK. Oh I hate that metallic black color scheme! It's worse than the Mach 1 colors when racing Syncopia. How do you guys manage to concentrate or find your way when the track and background blend into each other like that? ARGH!

But on the bright side, I did end up with my best zone run ever in terms of points and total zones.

Just had another great Syncopia run. I set a new personal record, in terms of points, zones cleared and perfect zones cleared. Final results: 129 zones, 103 perfect zones, 419,512 points. This run also included another "Perfect Zeus" in that I had all perfect zones until Zone 82. Even though this was an excellent run, I think it can be improved. That stupid left turn before the narrow section is the turn that always messes me up! Anyway, I got this run on video too, so I'll upload that to YouTube too.

Also, here's a screenshot of my top 5 scores. The cool thing about zone mode is that you can chart your progress easily. It's not the same as squeezing out one more barrel roll or shaving off another 0.5 seconds. There's just something thrilling about hitting a zone that you've never reached before, getting thrashed by it, and then mastering it. I remember when I was thrilled just to make it to Zone 75. And I remember when a "good" run for me was around 280,000. Wow, times have changed.

Quick question... I'm dismal at zone, so I have no idea of how some of the features work. What exactly does a barrel roll do for you in regular zone mode?

A barrel roll will give you 1200 points, according to Wipeout Central, though from what I see every time I do a barrel roll, it gives me 1000 points. There is also a hidden bonus that increases the value of the barrel roll by 200 for every successful consecutive barrel roll performed.

Also, here is the first part of my shot at the Mach is Back WZ Trophy:

@Light Buster & mannjon:
perfect lap = 2000 points
perfect zone = 1000 points

imperfect zone = 500 points
speed pad = 100 points

Zzonkmiles

I thought barrel rolls were worth 1500 points. But I guess I was wrong.

Anyway, to perform a barrel roll (BR), just press left-right-left or right-left-right when your ship is airborne. On some tracks, this is very hard to do because there aren't many places where you can go airborne (like Moa Therma reverse). On other tracks, there are many opportunities for BRs (like Sebenco Climb). I have found it harder to perform BRs in zone mode because the ships seem more glued to the track.

Be advised that all BRs consume 15 ship energy points in zone and regular racing. Even if your BR is unsuccessful (meaning your ship doesn't roll completely because you hit the ground), you still lose the 15 ship energy points and you don't get the 1000 (or 1500?) point bonus. In zone mode, BRs are a great way to increase your score, but only attempt them if you can score perfect zones. Clearing perfect zones are the only way you can restore your ship energy in zone mode.

Good luck, and happy zoning! We need more zone pilots here!

Zzonkmiles
11th May 2014, 11:18 PM
Just had an incredible zone battle room today. I've never seen those two pilots before: Lizeth and Toxic Emissions. I didn't win a single race against them, and I am a more-than-competent zone pilot. Of course, it didn't help that we were racing Sol 2, Ubermall, Chenghou Project and Sebenco Climb--all my weak tracks. Even Metropia was a disaster. But I had a lot of fun. If either of you are reading this, send me a friend request so we can zone again sometime!

Just had a frustrating run on Syncopia. I had a perfect Zeus going when I had to pause the game at zone 70. It took about 15 zones before I somewhat recovered. And this happened to be the run where I cracked 130 zones for the first time. Too bad it's not a top 5 score.

134/98

That could have been a new points record if I hadn't gotten distracted earlier.

Just had a 135/102 run on Syncopia. Just missed out on a new personal best by one freaking speed pad. I actually didn't expect this run to turn out so well because of inexplicable problems during Mach 1. But I'll take it!

Don't you go surpassing my zone 137 just yet mate ;) but that's nevertheless an impressive run. Saying that most runs above 110 zones mean that zone pilot has potential to hit 150 zones and beyond. Maybe even 200! I like to get to zone 200 :P

Keep zoning mate, you are doing great :D

I remember when I hit Zone 75 for the first time. I thought I was hot stuff back then.

Then I hit Zone 100 for the first time. I thought there was nothing else to accomplish.

Then I hit Zone 110.

Then Zone 120.

Then Zone 130.

I think I could reach Zone 150, but the problem is that third turn (the second left turn) right before the narrow section of the track. I can generally fly down the rest of the track without too many problems, but that turn before the narrow section really messes me up. Of course, it would probably help if I tried sideshifting, but I'm just not used to sideshifting in zone. So I don't do it at all.

Anyway, even if you don't feel like you're getting any better with total zones, you'll find yourself getting better with perfect zones. A typical run for me now is Zone 120+ with 90+ perfect zones. Anything worse than that is considered a failed run. There is one run in the records list that has maybe 128 zones with 113 perfect zones. That's the kind of run I'm trying to have.

Oh, and yeah, things really start to get fast at Zone 120. Barely any time to react at all.

ARRRRRGH!! 133 Zones on Syncopia, I was so close to beating my record of 137 Zones. On the bright side I did pretty good despite the fact I was hitting the walls a lot during that session granted that I sustained small amounts of damage from the collisions :P

Nice run, Snake! I posted this video in the Wipeout Videos thread, but it's probably better for me to post it here. Here's an Anulpha Pass reverse run I had yesterday. Even though I race Syncopia the most, I do race the other tracks sometimes too.

Another great Syncopia run. This time I set a new record for points. I had a 134/102 run for 425,000+ points. It actually could have been better, but I lost my concentration at maybe Zone 71 and I had a few bad laps in the 90s. I know I can break 450,000 and possibly Zone 140 very soon if I can just stay focused! Listen up, Doriett! If you're reading this, I'm coming for you! You are one rank higher than me according to the records on PSN. You better practice! :)

I actually got this run on video; it's uploading to YouTube now. :)

Just did a Zone run on Anulpha Pass forward and set a new personnel best :)
Zone reached: 87
Score: 245316
Perfect zones: 60

For me that was a very good run, especially with 60/87 zones were perfect plus the fact that Anulpha is considerably more difficult then Syncopia :D

-EDIT- Devastated now, was having an amazing run on Syncopia and well on my way to reach zone 140 at how well I was doing. But the inevitable happened of the glitch that I refer to as "Syncopia's killer" ended my run again :( 133 zones

(The glitch is the outside wall of the left hand turn after the first corner, if you touch a specific point on the wall then it will violently push the ship away into the opposite wall where the same effect happens causing a almost impossible to recover from pinball effect causing massive damage and pretty much ending your session at Supersonic)

Zzonkmiles
8th August 2014, 02:10 AM
^

Is that a glitch? I know there's a point on the wall where you can somehow ramp high into the air and end up screwing yourself because you can't see where you are falling. Nice run regardless though. I've never hit Zone 140. If you're still online, I'll turn on my PS3...

Snakenator1
8th August 2014, 09:16 AM
I think its a glitch because the wall is completely flat and even touching it slightly in that certain spot (even a very gentle scrape) will cause it to throw the zone ship violently into the other wall, it doesn't seem like that should even happen so I refer to it as a glitch.

Also I've had the case where the ship becomes airborne and it only happens to me above 120 zones, I think what's going on is you know how the zone ship anchors itself to the track? Well the same point on the first left-hander the track dips and sometimes the ships own momentum from exiting the first corner can throw its nose up as it travels down the track inclination but still anchors itself to the track, but if the speed is great enough this momentum can throw the ship into the air resulting in that problem. Colliding with the inside wall can also cause this at high zones.

Saying that my definition of a game glitch is:
A problem/mistake in the game that causes it to behave in a manner that was not intended by the programmers.

The problem I mentioned is therefore a glitch in my eyes, but this problem is open to interpretation ;)

I did it at long last I set a new zone record in this session, but since I was going for zones I didn't beat my score record but I don't care about that, I'm so happy :)

Wow! 140 zones is incredible! Great job!

BTW, when I went to look for you online earlier, you were gone. No worries; we'll hook up for a zone battle next time then!

Also, you raise an interesting point. How DO you measure someone's zoning ability? Is it total zones? Total perfect zones? Or total points?

Which zone stats are better?

A 140/110 run for 450,000 points?
A 150/100 run for 400,000 points?
A 130/120 run for 425,000 points?

The online records value points more. But there is one guy with a 128/113 run ahead of another guy with 150 zones and fewer points. I don't know which run is more impressive. What do you all think?

Snakenator1
9th August 2014, 10:44 PM
Yeah sorry I had to go offline as I had some jobs to do so maybe another time :P

I personally prefer to measure my run by Zones cleared and perfect Zones more than points. This mainly boils down to a personnel fact that if I try to go for points I spend more time focusing on my shield gauge more than my racing line. So for me its a huge distraction so I don't barrel roll during my runs. I rely on speed pads, perfect Zones and prefect laps for my score.

I'll give you a example:
My current points record had barrel rolls in them but my Zone was only 127 due to the distraction I had
My new session set a new zone cleared record 140 had 0 barrel rolls allowing me to focus on the track and therefore survive longer

Personally I am more impressed by zone reached than score obtained, really going for a points run is how many barrel rolls can you do in the session which anyone can do. But reaching really high zones like I did shows the level of skill that particular pilot has to achieve that record for not everyone can reach higher than Zone 100+

Basically I'm more impressed with Zones cleared rather than points so that Zone 150 you mentioned would be my choice. If you ever watch me do a Zone run then there will be 0 barrel rolls in it. This is my opinion though so its open to debate.

Zzonkmiles
10th August 2014, 07:04 PM
Interesting perspective.

I think points are important because they show an element of risk taking that requires you to be good at scoring perfect zones in order to capitalize on them. Barrel rolls consume 15 ship energy, but you only get 10 ship energy back for a perfect zone. So I will execute as many barrel rolls as I practically can until around Zone 110 when I rarely attempt them. It sucks when my zone run ends prematurely because I barrel rolled too often. But at the same time, barrel rolls force you to get perfect zones so you can get that ship energy back. So I think of barrel rolls as the daredevil's approach to zoning.

As for regular zones, I will agree that this is probably seen as the most impressive. Saying you reached Zone 150 sounds more impressive than saying you scored 500,000 points. But I would rate a 140/115 run on Syncopia for 450,000 points above a 150/100 run on Syncopia for 400,000 points because the first run had a higher percentage of perfect zones. Remember that perfect zones and perfect laps also give you big points, not just barrel rolls. But I guess it's an individual preference thing. Getting multiple perfect zones in the 140s shows a higher level of mastery than merely "surviving" to 150--at least to me. But then again, I've never hit Zone 150 or even 140 before, so I guess I can't say for sure! ;)

So I see a ton of Syncopia Zone action, but have you all done all the other tracks as well? I have noticed it seems considerably easier to get records on other tracks due to everyone playing on Syncopia. This is not to tarnish anyone for zoning exclusively on Syncopia. I myself haven't gotten overn zone 80 there. But I have been able to get really good rankings on Chenghou Reverse, Metropia Fwd, and Sol 2 Rev with almost little to no effort leading me to believe there is no zone love for other tracks. Thoughts?

Good question, Mannjon.

I actually race on almost all the other tracks too, but I'm not as good at them. In fact, I posted a video here of my Zone 80 Anulpha Pass reverse run. My strongest tracks after Syncopia are Anulpha Pass (reverse), Vineta K (forward), Sebenco Climb (reverse), Metropia (reverse), Modesto Heights (reverse), Moa Therma (forward) and maybe Amphiseum (forward). I think reverse tracks in general are much easier to set good records on without too much effort because the reverse tracks just aren't as popular. The only tracks I really suck at are Ubermall (forward and reverse), Sol 2 (forward and reverse) and Chenghou Project (especially reverse). Maybe Syncopia is the most popular because that's where you can easily get the highest zones in the game. But I think hitting Zone 60 on Chenghou Project is far more impressive than Zone 80 on Anulpha Pass or Syncopia.

I'm a little different for my Zone really, when I play WOHD Zone I am exclusive to Syncopia and Anulpha forward because I feel like if I can't get to a really high Zone (which to me is like Zone 85+) then I get frustrated because I feel like it wasn't a rewarding experience like reaching Zone 140 on Syncopia. That is just me as a person ^.^

However for the other Wipeouts I have which are Pulse and 2048 I actually Zone on all the tracks, 2048 I've done Zone 142 on Sol2 and Pulse Moa Therma forward I've reached Zone 77 (Just part of my many Zone records list)

Regards to Zone Battle I don't care about the track though, because like Cipher said you can boost and absorb to victory with little effort so for me it doesn't matter.
Also Cipher I agree with you, WHY CAN'T WE GOT TO ZONE 75 ON ZB?? IT WOULD BE AWESOME :D

*sigh* I wish ZB was more popular online, but the corruptive properties of Eliminator seems to sway the new pilots away from such a masterpiece game mode :/

Zzonkmiles

I think zoning on harder tracks is a totally different experience from zoning on Anulpha and Syncopia. It's a different type of thrill even though your zone is not nearly as high. Reaching Zone 50 on Modesto Heights or Sebenco Climb reverse, for example, is scary stuff.

And yeah, I wish the programmers could allow you to make a zone battle goal of 75. What's the point of having a zone target of 15? Seriously? And I wish they would fix the leaderboards as well.

Prefer 1v1 rather than the mess it gets with 4 or more people, still ZB > elims by far :P

And yup, zone 75 would be lovely, i just tend to not boost the last couple of zones just so i can enjoy the speed ^^ (unless there's challenging ZB players in the lobby)

Sorry to hear about your accounts, Ryuga. That's gotta be frustrating.

I'm actually online now. Just tried zoning Sebenco Climb reverse. Man, that track is evil. Only hit Zone 41 before crashing out. In a sick way, that's actually one of my favorite zone tracks.

I've been playing other games a bit recently, so I'm out of practice. But I picked up this game again today and zoned for the first time in a few weeks. I got a 126/102 run for 409,500 points. The fact that I didn't even consider this run to be that great is a sign that my expectations and skill level have improved considerably. Now, any race in which I don't break 400,000 points, 120 zones, or 100 perfect zones is seen as a failed run. The thing I like the most about Zone is how you keep inching your way higher and higher towards greatness. Anyway, in this run, I had some major screwups in the 90s and was down to about 40 ship energy. But I was able to get some perfect zones/laps and get back up to 100 energy at around Zone 118. Then things sort of fell apart.

Oh no! Disaster has struck!

Was sitting pretty at Zone 122 or so and about to complete a perfect lap when I somehow oversteered and hit the wall. That led to a loss of about 60-70 ship energy, which is fatal at that speed. I somehow hung on for another 10 zones or so before finally crashing out. It's a 134/105 run for 426,000 points. I've hit Zone 134 a few times already, but 105 is the highest number of perfect zones I've achieved and I beat my old points record by 1000. I know I could probably get a 140/110 run for 450,000 points if I don't make any stupid mistakes, but everytime I fix one problem, another problem appears! Oh well. I got this on video, so I'll post that later.

I think that in zone mode on the less popular tracks tends to be a shorter attempt. For me personally, I get bored around zone 70 anyways. I have to pee, or need some water, or have to answer the phone etc... So I think I am personally suited for shorter zone runs. Got to zone 55+ on Chenghou reverse the other day. Got to near zone 50 on both Sols, you get the idea. For me, sitting for one attempt for longer than 15-20 minutes is just too loooooooooooong. I wish there was a way to start out at any zone previously reached, as a sort of practice. Now that would be awesome.

Maybe as you unlock a speed, you can start there for practice (and by that I mean you don't count the score).

I think Modesto Heights and Sebenco Climb are the two worst tracks for zoning. Just making it to Super Zen is hard enough. Ok, new zone challenge: get to the highest zone you can on the Uber Mall circuit by just going around the spot where the track splits. I've seen a video of a few that have gotten to zone 50 by just going in circles. I can't do this, so I'll admit it up front.

I actually tried this a few times before. But your ship energy decreases if you go in reverse for too long. So I didn't make it very far. But it's still a cool idea.

And yes, it does get you dizzy lol

@Zzonk, the time you go in reverse by just circling the splitted bit of the track is not enough reverse track length to make it go down ;)

Nice to meet you, zone masters:)
This is my first visit to this site and writing.
I'm a japanese and we japanese do not have the custom of using english, so my english is a bit strange:frown:
Light Buster, i'm very interested in your charange, so please tell me
which track is most difficult to dress in black for you?
I want to charange that track till hitting 60.

So far, I'm having trouble with Sebenco Climb, Ubermall, Sol 2, and Modesto Heights. Haven't tried the reverse variants yet but they'll be next.

And I really like this "The Mach is Back" challenge. I would love to attempt this challenge someday, but I am absolutely MISERABLE at some of the tracks, so I don't think this will be happening anytime soon. I think I'd have to start with "The Super Zen is Back" first! ;)

Darnit just did a 138 Zone run on Syncopia :P I was so close to going beyond my PB of 140
312467 points
97 perfect zones

I'm debating doing a run with barrel rolls to set a new score record and push me up the leaderboards, but my perfect zones are to inconsistent at the moment :P

Zzonkmiles
7th September 2014, 08:03 PM
I would personally recommend doing some barrel rolls. Your total zones and perfect zones should put you somewhere in the 380,000-430,000 range. Earlier today I had a 133/103 run for 420,000 points. I often have 310,000 points by Zone 85 or so, so I think it's time for you to start barrel rolling and working your way on up the leaderboards! BRs are a good way to FORCE you to get perfect zones because you won't be restoring your lost ship energy any other way!

Snakenator1
7th September 2014, 08:17 PM
Hmm I see your point there, my last run with barrel rolls was at 122 zones and I think the score was in the 370,000 range with 80-90 perfect zones. I am probably capable of it, I mean the 138 zone run saw me drop below 10% energy on zones 122/127/131 before my demise.
Saying that my current record was long ago to, I am getting farther Zone wise as well. Guess its time for a run then to beat my high score. See how it goes when I do it then :)

Zzonkmiles
7th September 2014, 09:03 PM
Good luck!

But here's the thing:

There comes a point in your abilities where it's smarter to stop barrel rolling because the extra points compete directly against your own survival. I typically max out on BRs until maybe Zone 27 when Super Phantom starts. Then I do one BR per lap until Mach 1. Then I do maybe two BRs every three laps for the rest of the game. But once I have a hard time getting two consecutive perfect zones, I tend to stop BRs completely (usually after Zone 110). So I'll often have maybe 80 ship energy or so at about Zone 110 and then whether I keep doing BRs depends on how many perfect zones I get afterwards. I usually have these markers:

100,000 points at Zone 28
200,000 points at Zone 54-56
300,000 points at Zone 80-85
350,000 points at Zone 100
400,000 points at Zone 115-125

There comes a point on Syncopia, however, when BRs can screw you up because of the weird camera angles and possibly landing off the track! So be careful!

Snakenator1
7th September 2014, 09:18 PM
Thanks for those markers, should give me an idea of what to try and aim for. But obviously I'll go with what my instinct says with the appropriate situation, hoping to at least:

Get 380,000 points
Reach higher than zone 130

That's if all goes according to plan at least :P

XxSuperRyugaxX
9th September 2014, 09:37 AM
Yep guys, for reach high scores on Syncopia you must barrel roll like a crazy :P
I usually barrel roll until 130, then I begin to get energy with perfect zones ( I still do some barrel roll every 2-3 laps ) until I get 100 energy.
Then if I see I'm going well I do again some barrel roll, and get again 100 energy, of course this is risky..

The trick is to see when you have to stop doing BRs because you can't get perfect zones anymore :)

Zzonkmiles
11th September 2014, 06:14 PM
The most frustrating thing about zone is how you can be doing really well and then have ONE screw up that sends you from near maximum energy to borderline critical. I just had one of those kinds of runs. Had near-max ship energy at about Zone 120 when it all came apart. The final result was a 128/106 run for 424,000 points, which is actually my third highest point total ever. But that run easily could have been in the 130s or maybe better. I got a video of it too, but I doubt I'll post it. Oh well.

Snakenator1
11th September 2014, 06:21 PM
I did a score run on Syncopia and the results were:

Score: 407,768
Zones: 133
Perfect zones: 100

Yeah I'm really chuffed with that, first time I broke the 400,000 mark so a new PB for score :)
Also miles I had the same thing happen, one error broke down the entire run, could of been a much better Zone.

I've had a curse lately where I've had 12 runs were my run ended at 133 zones, 6 of those runs were consecutive as well. 133 zones six times in a row is rather disturbing :P

-EDIT- In fact I would like to retract my statement before of preferring Zone over Score runs. I actually had a lot of fun going for the points so I will most likely do more of them in the future. The conversion has been completed you could say :D

Well, that was interesting. I clearly need to practice some of those tracks. I'm either pretty good at them or pretty bad at them. There is no in-between. Corridon 12 and Pro Tozo are in my "pretty bad" category, so I better practice!

Those Anulpha Pass races were pretty intense. I tried multiple strategies (including spamming zone barriers), but still couldn't pull out the win!

GGs to you and Lilith though!

Amaroq Dricaldari
11th September 2014, 07:38 PM
I managed to get to Zone 71 on Syncopia in the HD DLC for 2048, and Zone 57 on Anulpha Pass. Interestingly, all of the teams handle differently in the HD Zone Mode when you are playing it through 2048.

Snakenator1
11th September 2014, 07:39 PM
Thanks and likewise to you to, the Anulpha pass battle were the best ones :D
I Zone battle Anulpha a lot so that's how I was so competitive against Lilith.

Its really in the timing between Zone boosts, on Anulpha I do a boost straight after the first corner to pull ahead of the pack and thus avoid barriers early on. Then I do as many full boosts as I can. That's my strategy.

Your awesome to race though miles and I had a lot of fun battling you, we should have a 1v1 sometime :)

-EDIT- Yeah zone mode on the 2048 DLC is a lot harder because of the handling physics, my Syncopia stands on 75 zones.

Congratulations! The 400,000 point club puts you in some pretty elite company! How did those zone markers I told you about (for points) match up for you? I think you and I are at about the same level of skill on this track. So I'll be looking forward to your updates!

Also, when do you typically have your first flawed zone? I have made it to Zone 91 without hitting anything, but typically I hit the wall for the first time around Zone 70 in a moment of carelessness.

Snakenator1
11th September 2014, 07:44 PM
^ The markers for me I don't know as I didn't keep track, but I want to say I hit 400,000 on Zone 120.

My first flawed zone are random, I'm a little inconsistent with my perfects but I normally have that Zone always before 75 :P

I can actually do better at ZB in one-on-ones because there are usually fewer obstacles on the track. And today's tracks were ones I'm not that good at. I'm much better at Anulpha Pass reverse, Moa Therma, Vineta K, Chenghou forward, and of course Syncopia.

Anyway, I have the house to myself for the next three weeks, so it'll be easier for me to race for now. Let's hook up! :)

-EDIT- Yeah zone mode on the 2048 DLC is a lot harder because of the handling physics, my Syncopia stands on 75 zones.

What I meant is that each team handles differently from the others. The FEISAR zone ship oversteers all of the time, while the Icarus HD and Triakis Fury seem to handle just right in Zone Mode. I would like to say that 2048's default zone mode is even harder, because you jump straight from A+ (super phantom) to Mach 1, but those tracks are optimized for 2048's physics, AND the 2048 ships are a lot smaller. (My record is 88 zones for Capital Reach, with the AG-Sys agility).

Snakenator1
11th September 2014, 09:11 PM
^ I knew what you mean't, I was referring to the handling mechanics in general. But you are right though and it seems a little odd but I do like how choice of the team you race for actually affects your zone experience :)

I want to be the first person to get Zone Zeus on Anulpha Pass in 2048. If it hasn't been done already, I mean.

While I am on the subject, has anybody noticed that the Detonator ship is actually smaller than all of the other ships? However, it has the same stats as the Zone ship. It would be wonderful if you could use the Detonator ship in Zone Mode~

I also noticed that my performance in Zone Mode is significantly higher when my mind is thinking about something completely different... Ironically. So why not listen to WipEout - The Teams in podcast form? Through this, I just beat my record on Syncopia by two zones (so I am now at 73), and the Auricom informational segment just finished.

Now you need to get Supersonic on Sebenco lol ;) kidding we know that's impossible. Or is it???!!!!!

-EDIT- Hey guys I've figured out a way were you can determine your true positions are on the Syncopia.
Ryuga aka funeral mask holds the WR and is ranked at 74th place, above him are the corrupted scores (can someone double check he is 74th just in case)

SO! Take your false position on the leaderboard and subtract the amount of 74 from your rank and then you get your true rank!!

So for me I stand at 112th place on Syncopia, -74 makes me into 38th place!!!!
Oh I'm so happy to know that I have the 38th best score in the world :D

Zzonk!! I just did Zone mode in Internal View (1st person) on Syncopia and you have to try it!! Its so much fun :D

I just cleared 102 Zones using internal view and it was great! Why? The games frame rate increases with 1st person since its not loading the ship model anymore. Plus since the camera is close to the track itself the perceived speed is faster!! Zone 90 felt like Zone 115+ :D

It was great fun, definitely gonna do more internal view zones for fun. But not for serious record breaking runs because it is harder 1st person.
Guys give it a try ;)

Amaroq Dricaldari
16th September 2014, 04:44 PM
You're talking about HD, right? And not 2048? In HD, it doesn't mamtter because it is always running at around 60. However, I tend not to fly with Internal View because of the lack of a cockpit model; it is just a disembodied camera floating above the ground, which gets extremely disorienting. However, I used to frequently fly internal view when I first started playing WipEout.

Piranha Fury + Pilot Assist + Phantom + 99 Laps around Anulpha Pass + Internal View = Motion Sickness.

Zzonkmiles
16th September 2014, 11:08 PM
I've tried internal view before, but I couldn't get used to it. The problem is that I could never tell how close I was to the walls because there are no markers visible, such as the front of the ship. I haven't been able to play for a few days, but I really want to. I also want to set up a ZB date, Snake!

I am aware of the 74 corrupted scores in front of Ryuga's, but there is one score there that has about 464,000 points, so that score is still better than mine too. So I believe I am ranked #30 or #31. I've been trying to catch Doriett for months, but I am really close to him now!

Sunnydays: Thanks. Yeah, I zone on Syncopia the most, but I still try the other tracks sometimes. Other tracks I zone on are Anulpha Pass reverse and Modesto Heights reverse.

Snakenator1
17th September 2014, 02:48 PM
@Amaroq: yup you're right my bad :P See I wasn't Zoning with my glasses on so it felt like the Frame rate sped up, now I actually did it with my glasses on I feel like an idiot lol :brickwall

However I will hold onto my statement that Zoning with internal does increase the perceived speed of each Zone, mainly because the camera is situated at the front of the craft obstacles look like they approach you faster. So I will up-hold my statement about the perceived speed.
Also granted I agree with both of you, internal is hard to adjust as it looks like motion sickness.

I actually have a lot of fun with Internal view Zone, it feels like a roller coaster ride :D so I am going to keep doing 1st person Zone from now on just simply for fun.
What I will do I will split my Zone sessions into two categories:

Standard Zone: How I will play Zone normally so high Zone reached, barrel rolls etc.
Daredevil Zone: Entire Zone session from Zone 1 till the last is spent in Internal view, no barrel rolls just simply how far can I go.

So to start here is my Daredevil Zone session from just now:
Track: Syncopia
Zone cleared: 105
Perfect Zones: 73
Score: 245774

Zone in 1st person is a lot of fun to me, I will try Anulpha Pass fwd soon and see how far I get doing a daredevil zone. Wish me luck :D
Anyone else is welcome to try my new category, but I think I'm the only pilot crazy enough to Zone in such a way ;)

Yes, Musashimitsu. His videos were very impressive.
I thought at once that Musashimitsu was kousoku3180
because his score shown in that videos were WR level and
SuperRyuga's videos are not internal view.
But clearly Musashimitsu is a different person from kousoku3180 judging from HUD.
Musashimitsu's HUD is English and kousoku3180's HUD
is Japanese.

The most impressive video at zone mode for me is uploaded by oggob.

Okay I just turned my PS3 on after being inactive for maybe 2 weeks. I'll give the internal camera angle a try and see how badly I fail. I know I am out of practice.

And for Light Buster, Sunnydays and anyone else in this thread, please send me a friend request on PSN if you have room. I love zone battle rooms online and I like to compare my zone scores with my friends' scores to see how we stack up against each other! You can find me on PSN with the name "Zzonkmiles."

EDIT: So I just tried internal view. It's very, very hard. I can't get a good sense of my trajectory or how close I am to the walls. I wish I had some sort of reference point, such as crosshairs, a grid or the tip of the ship's wings or something. Anyway, the final result was an 82/51 run for 186,000 points. It has potential, but it will require me to totally relearn the game. I think this game mode might be well suited for Eliminator, actually.

105 Zones cleared using the pir-hana prototype, I have tamed the beast. Yes I am insane, but that makes me a competitive pilot ;)
I hate you.

While I am on the discussion, did you know that it is possible to get boost starts in 2048 Zone Mode? It doesn't work with the Pir-Hana Prototype, sadly, but it does allow you to get that tiny extra amount of XP.

New PB :D

Track: Syncopia
Score: 411812
Zone cleared: 135
Perfect Zones: 97

A very good run, set a new PB also of having my first flawed Zone at 77, all the others before it were all perfect. Really happy with that :)

-EDIT- GUYS ZONE BATTLE ROOM RIGHT NOW!!

Is that a challenge, Lilith? Challenge accepted! You reached Zone 131? Impressive indeed. And so is your Corridon 12 run. That's not one of my stronger tracks.

I have not played Wipeout for maybe 2 weeks now. But I'll get back in the cockpit soon enough.

As for Perfect Zeus, it's not hard as long as you don't get lazy during Mach 1. I've thrown away a lot of Perfect Zeus runs by clipping a wall at maybe Zone 68 or 72 or something. My personal record is 90 perfect zones before finally hitting the wall. My highest number of perfect zones is 105, but that is nothing compared to some of the truly elite players here!

Guys guys guys!! I just tried today to do a zone run on Syncopia, I reached zone 187!! For now it's my highest record, but still not the best with points! :(
But anyway this new record excited me so I must try a lot of times!

And guys, what about a ZB this evening? From weeks I'm so busy with school, so a ZB will not be bad. :)

Holy s@@t! You must be a machine!?
Only 13 zones… You can do it!

As for me, I have really enjoyed internalmode.
439k is my best.
This result is far inferior to Ryuga and Elcho but I have been satisfied so far.

Congratulations! Looks like I'm going to have to get back on the track after being out of action for 3 weeks. Can't let everyone pass me by!

So I turned on the PS3 for the first time in about 3 weeks yesterday. I tried a bit of zone and actually had an imperfect lap at Zone 13 or something. That's right--Rapier. So I turned off the game. Yeah, so I'm out of practice. Oops.

An absolute excellent run on Anulpha Pass forward today, I beat all of my PB's I previously had on it in one run :)
I thought I add in the brackets how much I beat my previuos PB by.

Zones cleared: 90 (+3 Zones)
Perfect Zones: 58 (+8 Zones)
Score: 267139 (+21611)

Definitely felt like a good run, I spent my last two Zones on 4% shields so that was quite a tense moment.

-EDIT- So I actually looked at the in game leader board for Anulpha Pass forward Zone and someone has a Zone of 3336 o.O
Yeah they clearly exploited the glitch that let you fall off the track with 0 damage.

In fact all scores above 192nd position are corrupted, so minus 191 places from your scores guys and there is your true position for AP forward

But I did try Wipeout yesterday for the first time in about three months. My reflexes are off.

Thanks. It's been a while since I saw you on the forums.

Well, I'm still here. But my gaming time has been significantly curtailed over the past few months. I moved and now have a much longer daily commute. If I'm lucky, I have about one hour of gaming time a day at the very most. And then I also have a gaming backlog of over 50 games. That doesn't help.
