Hmm...multiplayer mode would change things quite a bit. low shield wouldn't necessarily be a good thing anymore (fixed hyperthrust rate vs variable pit lane recovery rate, etc)!

I'm honestly not entirely sure. If I can survive in Icaras, that would settle things. Otherwise I'd use Qirex to sacrifice speed for shielding.
