Default N64 NEGCON can it be done?

very close now. The turning was great in my test with that n64 pot in my negcon, and the gas always on., and all buttons are active, just need the right hookup now, meaning the grounds need to go to the right places. On a side note, someone took my memory card at last years wipeout tournament, so I could not test Piranha 2

If I get a chance, I'll go through my N64 stuff this weekend and see if it came back with me by accident. Does your memory card have any specific mark or label on it?

not alot of time on the weekend, but I did get the xccelerator wheel board into a box, with all points soldered and parts glue-gunned down, got wires coming out of the box, so now I just need to finish the important side, then connect. This was difficult, but the second time through I don't think would be so bad, since I would not have to test all of those connections.

    95% success!

got it wired last night, and it runs great, put in a code to use piranha 2, and that was excellent as well. The controller has a max turn of 45 degrees, so if you have a high sensitivity in XL, this would be just right for you.

    the 5%

A and B are hitting both functions with a single press of either button.

fix tonight: separate the button A from the board, and have it hit a microswitch. This is not too difficult

left brake: which I set as the II button is not working. There must be a loose connection somewhere so I need to figure out that one thing. If I cannot figure it out, I will just add the Z button and use that as left brake.

Last post here, it is done, it works very well, and feels like xl . I am going to try and use the ultraracer 64 as a base on my next attempt. The ultraracer will allow me to put an analog stick in for pitch control.

darnit, the button I put to the analog pot is going wacky, not really working (thrust) or half working. I did figure out though that it was not working exactly right before, and if I just turn the pot, it works great (and fast), so I need to make a touch of a modification, maybe put the pot right on the negcon with a turn knob. Anyway, it turns even better than I thought now that the gas is working correctly (sees arnaud and ben drooling)

OK, new model using the ultraracer 64 is done! analog stick in and working great. ONce again, this turns at 45 degrees each way. It may even be smoother than the other, but that is hard to tell. tested with waverace and it felt good, but I am no good at waverace anymore, so I would need to test more. Got great times right off the bat, and it felt natural like xl as well. ONly issue with this one is if someone wanted one, the left trigger is hard to make if you want to use it for a brake. I use it for a weapon, so it is fine, but wouldn't want all that holding tapping on that microswitch.

I guess I would want to use the other one (xccelerator wheel) if someone else wanted one of these. Anyway, enough rambling, just wanted to give an update

great to see you got it working perfectly!, im not a big fan of Wipeout 64, buit might be because i only tried it via emulators...

i still think the analog stick might be better for WaveRace64 than the NeGcon man, havent tried the neggie with it yet.

time for a waverace contest I think!! Are the controls simply just stick control and gas? is there a brake? I seem to remember pitching back slowed you down, while foward was faster? I don't have the manual

Iirc, theres no brake, there is button B that makes you stomp the watercraft to help you bottom the waves, also to brake hard i pulled the joystick backwards in a diagonal to the side of my convinience, this made the character make a drift like move.

pitching forward helps you dive (very important in twilight city and the last stage), but i dont think it makes you faster, if it does must be a slight pitch down (which would make an y analog axis important)

Then there are the stunts, but afaik they help nothing to make you faster or anything but extra points, they are mostly for the part of the game that have stunt courses.

count me in for the contest!, hoping its not a tight schedule so i have time to send some times!, you see guys, Al is making everyone think he doesnt remember the controls... and then he will send times that will make you seat again in front of the screen for a long while!
, yes im a glutton for punishment!

So it turns out that almost all n64 controllers do not turn correctly. This means if ou sit still in a wipeout ship, then turn full right it takes about 4 seconds for a 360. However, if you turn left, it takes roughly 4.8 - 6 seconds which means you have to use your brake more for sharp left turns. Also, once you tap right it continues moving slowly right unless you push the other way. ( this also happened in fzero). Even official controllers do this.

The asciwheel and v4 wheel turn full both ways, so they are excellent choices, but they do not use potentiometers, meaning a n64 Negcon is out of the question unless you are a tiny clock specialist ( lots of gears), or make a monstrosity to fit the entire wheel base in between the Negcon ( yes I did this). All of my other n64 negcons do not turn full to the left (. 80% maybe)

Anyway, I had an superpad 64 ( grey ). And tested it, perfect turns. I managed a lot of soldering to now have an amazing Negcon controller, with great turning. It still does that minor turn thing but does not affect the game while you are racing. Now I am working on one with 3.5 mm jacks for each button so it will be completely customizable. This will become arnauds version , so if ou think you had fast times before, think again . Medusa is receiving on as well, but she doesn't get the guinea pig version.

    SWEET!!!
Fight for it? How about first come first serve? no, I'm kidding. Entirely up to you. I will stop short of offering you my kidney or firstborn child.

Seriously though that is genius! Your forum name should have something below it like, Custom NeGcon Developer or NeGcon Possibility Expander. Or something shorter and more precise.

I'm making another one before you both get here, I already have one for myself without the ports ( which are really cool). The switch I made a bit of a mistake, although it works perfectly. I should have just bought a two to one phono jack, although that would still work.

    I'll take half a kidney!
