Should I?
Just had W3O delivered and it is the version that comes bundled with destruction derby two. Thing is it's still in it's cellophane wrap and is literally in mint condition.
Am I going to waste a fortune if I open it?

Depends on what type of "software/hardware", khm, you got on your PSX.
At least I would think like that.

well how much is and how hard is it for you to get another copy of SE where you live?, if it's not to much of a chore I'd find another copy, even one with out the manual
if its only going to cost the price of a few meals just don't eat for a couple days and buy another copy of SE

You have (in the normal edition there is, i think in this one will be too) an option to see it in 16:9. In the options menu, video configuration, you can choose "wide", or something like that appears. The menus don't change the aspect ratio but the races are in widescreen.

You could always run it with an emulator, rendered at full HD - that will probably look better than SDTV.
Sure, textures and polygons won't become more complex this way
