People like winning more than they do losing.
I think I would've given up pretty early myself if it wasn't for the community side of things ;-)

Yeah, but back in the WOHD days there was a strong desire to get better instead of quit. I took a 15 second loss as a challenge.

Are you sure that wasn't just because of the great atmosphere in the chats and stuff? (something we unfortunately don't really have anymore on PS4), people can challenge themselves on the leaderboards if they really want to, and ps+ enforces the thought of "time is money" online, so they might want to spend their online time on other games as well, instead of spending hundreds of hours trying to get better online

Wow dude, I forgot that it used to be free!

Still, if people have the money for vr, one would assume they could afford psn +

I'm having the opposite effect, ever since the VR update I've been getting an awful lot of grief and abusive messages from low level randoms (157 messages on record and potentially more since I made my privacy settings super strict).

Like Cipher said people hate losing, especially evident for me as people can't seem to stand the fact I fly Piranha. Apprently its super OP when I fly with it and its unfair on them, even though Piranha is one of the hardest teams to play with
Then these people start talking to others to gang up on me with weapons until I leave the lobby, and then send me messages saying "Git gud noob, ragequitter lol". Its a war I can't win with these hypocrites.

I've just given up and retired for now until I feel like returning in hopes people will mature.

I kind of fear that these younger gamers just have a bad attitude. I started maining Tigron now, and I get the same thing with the hate. I feel you though, because I played a substantial amount of Piranha and Icaras first. On average, I win by 8-10 seconds (less when I miss a turbo roll or shortcut. So it is well within the realm of beatable with enough skill. I'm saying that those times should inspire, not enrage. I used to suck. Now I'm pretty damn good. I got that way because it pissed me off when I lost and I wanted to do something about it. And I did.

With 2048 though, I almost always go with Feisar Prototype. Those races aren't even close. On Capitol Reach and Subway specifically, I'll lap people or win by 25+ seconds. I get called a cheater, that I use glitches, and that I should stop playing unfair. I mean, come on people, use the right ship. Feisar Prototype is totally broken on those tracks. Honestly though I sucked on the Vita. VR makes it so much easier on the console.

Anyways, I sincerely hope that people will be more encouraged to not quit. Maybe we need a get together event?

Last time I wanted to play online I waited for more than 20 minutes to even find a game that more or less suits me. I think I went back to offline races then, as there were simply no games. There’re mostly Flash or Rapier races but no Phantom or A/A+ – and I’m almost exclusively interested in the latter. So no luck for me. The times I do find the races I long for, it’s often me and just a single other player, which indeed can be a tad demotivating, for both the winner and the loser.

I have to say, though, those times you have the patience to get a game’s lobby filled up (yeah, you should invest an hour or more for that to happen) things become entertaining. There’re the pros on top fighting for the first place, the midfield and the less skilled and everybody has its contest. This is usually the moment I try search for the player’s ID to add him to the friends list – those players that are similar skilled to oneself are a rare breed!
