I see there is mixed input indeed. My only problem with doing away with bsb is that if they did it now, then all previously obtainable lap times become impossible to break. As it is now I feel like you have to use them if you care at all about wr's which I do.
I would prefer to not have to learn them. But since they are already in the game, they need to remain there. I never got a chance to hit the top 20 in all the wr events because I started playing HD after the patch that Yeldar quit playing over. If you get rid of the bsb, the same thing will happen here in omega too. I may not beat the current wr for any track, but I like knowing it is physically possible.
No offense, mate, but you had the chance. You simply decided to not do it. Taking wipeoutrankings.com as the reference, of all 96 SL records from HD, there are only THREE remaining which were set originally before the patch.

So that argument isn't legit imo, but i still can understand you. There has been a rumour that connavar is/was rebuilding that website for OC. A community based leaderboard would be (again) a good solution, if it was really a serious topic.
And I still may go back and do that with the downgrade. The point is that the devs should not take away stuff like this unless they also plan to wipe leader boards. Both scenarios are not good.

edit: got it down to 7:29:05, some of the top times are insane, though.
I don't care about bsb, it should stay as is since it has been in there forever. just having to turn around, drive backwards for a TT to get a good start is a waste of time and quite stupid. The old games had this, but no one did it. The timer starting two seconds after the start would take care of this 100%.
