I change my track selections based on whether or not I'm online, offline or in zone mode.
For Zone mode I always use slightly indie or chillout stuff. I don't need pounding music to make the tension higher thanks. Band of choice at the moment is Coldplay - Rush of Blood or Manic Street Preachers - This is my truth what is yours.
For any other online music it varies. Mostly Pendulum. Favored track is The Other Side
for zone i tend to go for log lasting trance (e.g. http://www.youtube.com/user/maclover...13/kPmmHWSZwEA )
however a nice beat can work out real nice too
for online matches, i find them to short, my song never hits that moment where it starts before the round is over and i don't know about coldplay with wipeout lolz
i like coldplay, but with wipeout????

These first 2 are mixes from mr. rain called nitegrooves...The first 2 minutes started slow and then the rest is str8 groovin!
I would also suggest some of George Acosta who you can find on this soundclous site also. Ill link some of it later.
Heres some George Acosta...I guarantee faster laptimes while listening to this stuff!

Has this been brought up before? (This is a looong thread).
Binaural beats are being studied as a way to modulate brainwaves such that the brain is induced into different states. Current studies range from exploring applications such as meditation, treating children with autism/asperger syndrome, studying for exams, and so on.
I'm wondering how they could affect Wipeout play.
The general idea is described in the wikipedia page, but if you google around, you'll find other sources of info too.
I think I'm going to start experimenting, as soon as I can find my old stereo headphones.
[Edit]
These things have been around for a while, actually, but if you want some sources to try out immediately, check out the following site that has a few binaural mixes: http://squareeater.com/
I am sure someone must have mentioned this already, but Celldweller - The Last Firstborn works fantasically well with WipEout in my opinion. In fact, when I first heard it I thought it would be well suited to a WipEout game. Hooray for custom soundtracks!
over my week or so playing i've been listening to alot of Vocaloid music, mainly by Tripshots. i'd call it either light dance music, or very soft techno, but works particually well for my campaign games.
(warning: it's in Japanese, so not a good choice if you're not into non-english vocals =p)
Tripshots/Hatsune Miku - Anger
and
Tripshots/Hatsune Miku - Nebula
The videos are cringeworthy but i couldn't find them on Amazon =< (had to grab the album from itunes Japan myself)
Edit:
Pardon the name but "Blood Stain Child" produce a trance/Metal hybrid that i've always been a fan of but started to love in online races and tornaments, but not for your standard speedlaps/TTs as it's a little... agressive.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E81-JW18WW8
is from their album coming out in a couple days in japan and end of the month for EU, but they have a few albums already released with a siilar feel
(warning: contains trance and Metal grunts, not for the feint hearted =p)
Kandi & Neumann - Let Go has been one of my favorite tracks to zone to. The bit starting at 4:30 just gives me this sense of euphoria when I'm going at zones 60+ Really uplifting track that gives me chills!

Some suggestions for Zone... for me it's all about long minimal repetitive tracks for zone, so...
Four Tet & Burial - Moth - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdTbgx5ZXSk
Underworld - Rez - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6XOuiqW0WI
Innerzone Orchestra - Bug In The Bassbin - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mInY6_o6PCE
Paperclip People - Throw - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2B2UAjOsaVI
And of course you can never go wrong with some classic banging acid...
Stakker Humanoid - Humanoid - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xy8_kdeS02E
LFO - LFO - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RpZVPSCv79U
Hardfloor - Acperience 1- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SGH_ZwGcZ0
Rez is particularly good on Syncopia cause it sounds amazing when it applies that filter that it uses when your ship is in mid air.
I listen primarily to DnB or vocal trance like Pendulum, Deadmau5, TC, High Contrast, Subfocus, London Elektricity, Bassnectar, The Qemists, Benny Benassi, Ferry Corsten, Oakenfold, etc. while playing, although sometimes it feels silly loading up a six minute plus song for a two minute race.
Occasionally I'll mix it up and listen to Guilty Gear soundtracks, The Offspring, RHCP and the like. You can race to anything honestly so long as you enjoy what you're listening to.
I may add links to specific tracks later for the more obscure stuff.
Definitely trance for Zone mode. Hard pounding dnb/electro house/edm for VSing. :+
I have a Stephan Bodzin live @ Apolo-Nitsa set I just keep playing over and over again. It's perfect for Zone. :D
It's minimal techno, if you're wondering. :g
Some specific links this time:
London Elektricity - Remember (High Contrast Remix)
Blame - Star (Ft. Camilla and Fuda Guy)
Ferry Corsten - Fire
Freestylers - Cracks (Flux Pavillion Remix)
Matrix & Futurebound - Sand Storm
Passion Pit - Sleepyhead (Borgore Remix) - This one starts off odd but the drop at 1:22 makes it worth the wait
Plump DJs - Rocket Soul
TC - Flatline
Not necessarily obscure stuff, especially since obscurity is relative, but links I had handy. Apologies in advance if anyone runs into country restrictions.
Not having subscribed to mainstream media (besides playstation games) since 1998, I would like to know whether people find all these sources of music through, say, tv, radio or cable?
Or are they found elsewhere? How do you initiate your music searches?
I usually listen to the following albums when I play:
The Prodigy
*insert whole discography here*
The Chemical Brothers
Dig your own hole
Surrender
Push the button
Further
Pendulum
Hold your colour
In Silico
Immersion
Sasha (yes, the Sasha from Wip3out)
Airdrawndagger
The Qwat collection vol.2
Xpander EP
Dom & Roland
Chronology
Industry
Daft Punk
Discovery
Human after all
Noisia
Split the atom
Tha Playah
Walking the line
Slagsmalsklubben
Boss for leader
And the Wip3out soundtrack.
And when I really feel hardcore I too listen to Coldplay :g (and Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Police, Pink Floyd, Michael Jackson).
So far the song I enjoy the most racing with is:
Dom & Roland - Moulin Rouge

REO Speedwagon – Back On The Road Again
REO Speedwagon – Ridin' The Storm Out
Wipeout has no other sound to me.
when I play wipeout I normally have the last CD I bought burnt onto my PS3 so it can get listened to alot right now I have the new Foo Fighters album(Wasting light) as one of my playlists and Guns and Roses Apitite for destruction which I got a loan of from my driving instructor( having a lessons really funny, Im like reversing round a corner trying to be so careful and theres some crazy rock anthem blasting out full pelt, its so hard to not sink my foot into the ground :P)
I dont always have rock music on at wipeout I just deleted my Pendulum album of it to save some space but when you do I think it makes it feel really like Fzero. It kinda fits it in a sort of differnt character from electronic music.
The Frozen Synapse soundtrack is currently on loop for my WipEout sessions, and damn it's a good soundtrack.
if you like the built-in music, you'll prolly enjoy this.
it's on sale on Steam (yes, the game thing steam) for £2 for today, but it's normally £4.

and as steam don't let you try before you buy... have a youtube link too

Nice 80s collection, @boycey83!
For Zone mode I've found Armin van Buuren's "A State Of Trance" works well, particularly A State Of Trance - "397" (03-26-2009). People have realized Zone mode offers a very different look and feel from the standard racing, thus, the music has to be fitted for it.
