View Full Version : Friendly Wipeouters

Hi,
sometimes while playing with other (for me unknown) people I try to message them to congratulate for a good race or to pay tribute to these players. Now the strange thing: Nobody has ever ignored me or was unfriendly. Most conversations ending with a smile and sometimes with a new training partner on the friend list. I've never seen such a pleasant/nice community like this. In other games one is often ignored or a hateful message is returned (rare but happens too).
Well here's my question: Am I the only one who had made such an experience? Or is it reality? :)
Edit: Hmm made a mistake in the title. Should be "Friendly Wipeouters" :(

I've messaged people after races with those same results, too! I think it's a reality for us Wipeouters. We're just a group of friendly people. :)

It's true, the number of people we've experienced over the years who have been utter tits can be counted on one hand. Not sure what it is about this game but it certainly seems to bring together the decent part of the gaming community :)

WipEout is easily the greatest game for community. Never ONCE had problems.
I love you all.

this community is great, cause EVERYONE is welcome! if you have a question, im sure it'll be answered here, if possible. most of the community members over here are 30+ of age, and have a 'balance' in RL (own family etc.). so you won't get stupid (childish) answers or comments most likely ;)

Same goes to me, virtually through PSN and also in reality when we decided to acheive steps forward and meet for real through European Wipeout Conventions or North American ones. Welcome to a family-kind community :)

I absolutely love this community. This is easily the best one I've signed up for so far. There's something magical about WipEout that surprisingly brings everyone here together, like what Hellfire said. Long live WipEoutZone!

Yeah great community!! I think it is partly because the game is very individual in the way that you don't have teams so it becomes more important to be friendly and message other pilots during races. All my firends on PS3 are Wipeouters!! Even if they have "retired"...

With the exception of the xX333-3Xx and xX333-1Xx and of course the "sheep girls", I've never had a problem. I could get a bit competitive and go on the war path but that's only if I'm really p-ed off. :)

Thanks for your answers. :)
I fit into the group JFthebestJan mentioned. With 30+ now I've played some Wipeout games before (started to play Wipeout 2097 on a brand new Playstation console back in 1996 I believe). I think most of you have played a Wipeout series game before HD/2048. This creates a question in my mind automatically:
Is the Wipeout community growing? Do young people (who had never played this game series before) stay with Wipeout a longer time and not to get the game trophies only?
Everytime I see the online lobby of Wipeout HD it's getting more empty. Although many PS3 users got the game after the PSN outage. But maybe it depends on the game genre and most people have other preferences.

Who were the "sheep girls"? xD It sounds like an interesting story...
Defjukie16
1st November 2012, 04:25 AM
dreadofmondays:
Well the sheep girls are a group of racers that are in the online play sometimes and kinda trash talk you after each race, I remember I was playing a_sheepy_kiss_4U and I eliminated her then the message started coming saying it's not wise to shoot sheepgirl then everytime she won a race she messaged saying go go sheepgirl. Not the toughest racers but not to be taken lightly... :)
Feydius:
Of Course that's the case! I've been playing WipEout for a year now and I know onlykpop has been playing for a year as well and his is already one of the top players on online racing mode. I've played all the classic WipEouts and tried to master them for the love of the game. The storyline of WipEout is so interesting that new players can't help but get drawn in and the scenery in every WipEout game is beautiful. Not to mention that if you're playing Gran Turismo for example, you can't shoot your opponent off the tracks with missiles!!! But you do have to factor in the patience level, because if you've gotten all the medals in campaign mode in every class, you might think you're one of the top players well wait till you get online and see how good you really are. That's when you lose players. At this point the players have a choice, to stop online play right there and only play the game without online mode or step up and push yourself to the next level, you may get beat hundreds of times but if you stick it out, study the tracks and practice barrel rolls like crazy and have the heart of a true WipEout player, you'll be one of the top players on WipEout. That's with any mode in the game eliminator, zone.

Defjukie16, spot on there mate about the time needed to become a top pilot! :)
Races become very interesting with a_sheepy_kiss_4U. In fact they become more like eliminator. But are very fun !!

First time I race sheep girl, I was racing green first lap "it" mined and bombed me to keep me off and then second lap it did something that I personally find to be bad sportsmanship, namely brake to get behind you and rocketed me up the arse and killed me, that I didn't appreciate, I still beat the sheep girl but got a message saying something like "IT*S SHEEPGIRL!" sadly I made the mistake of feeding the troll and wrote back since then whenever I see a sheepgirl I get rude messages.
though I'm unsure if it's actually a group I think it might just be one person with many different accounts

I love going head-2-had with Sheepgirl and her mob/split personality.
She kept sending me messages and I just said: "Flattered by your obsession, but I'm not interested." :lol

1st November 2012, 11:35 PM
ohhhmg!! Now it all makes sense... I met a sheepgirl the first day I ever played online!
I was hosting this Flash class, Single Race lobby when a sheepgirl popped in and made it her point to attempt to eliminate me every race. That happened for like 10 matches, then someone jumped in the lobby with a ridiculous PSN ID and she claimed her new victim. (Which was great, cause I started winning races after that!)
That first "go go sheepgirl" message confused me a whole lot, until now. But she was friendly enough, sending "rocket kisses, muah" and whatnot. She even asked if I missed her "lovin" at some point. Such a random first day!

Umm I've got theory about the sheepgirl sheepy kiss identity and here it is: not a girl (takes a b to know one, you see and some wording in messages gave it away bub, sorry), from the attitudes I think this fella is an ex-member of the zone and well, sometimes the random messages are just so sad I want to send virtual hugs in return
But I've always returned messages in good fun because regardless of that member's exit from here and circumstances it's quite obvious ("s")he still loves wipeout. You don't have to be principled, extremely high-moraled and friendly to love wipeout, that's just what I expect from the zone. Always interesting, sheepy ;) I feel sure you're going to read this at some point.
BTW sheeps really doesn't like it when you have a wipeout noob friend over, racing under your ID, and then you randomly take over. That was funny, really funny...

Obviously the WipEout community isn't perfect. If you talked to Infoxicated about it, I'm sure he'd be able to provide a few stories where players have not been that nice.
While I don't play anymore, when I did I almost never sent messages to anyone unless I was spoken to. However, if there was an always-on voice chat during the race, you can be assured I would not have had many nice things to say about most racers who hit me with weapons or dogged my racing line ;P
Medusa
2nd November 2012, 08:02 PM
:lol yes of course it's not perfect, it's just pretty close in general don't you think? Anyway the sheepies' trash talk has always had friendly tone to it, what ends up in my inbox at least, and I merely posted my little theory as a sort of heads-up for all us nice perfect people here at the zone :P
AGSys
2nd November 2012, 08:47 PM
I think I've encountered one of these sheepies before. When I was playing WHD at my friend's house, some random racer kept sitting on the weapons pads and shooting all sorts of annoying things just to eliminate the others. Even though there may be a small 'friendly' tone to their messages, it's so freaking irritating since you can't do anything about it.

I love everybody who races nicely, and even better the ones who exchange pleasantries after many close races. When you're not a top player, it's more difficult to find people close to your skill level(as in, you can't guess skill level by rank like the 101s can, lol), and when it happens it's like finding a blood brother, you know? "Yay, somebody skill-impaired at the same level as I!!!" Even if been exchanging bombs for two hours, any language can understand a message with a ":)" and a "thank you for the races" in it. Not that I do that often, just for special pilots.
Gekko, just jump right in, it's amazing what you learn by watching the top players lap you!
Defjukie16
4th November 2012, 03:12 PM
Well skill level does factor in the races but personal ability is truly the key. Elite racers are not invincible, you just need to practice and believe in your abilities and master them. That way, skill level doesn't factor it as much and abilities step in to play. Of course I'm not saying that a pilot on level 1 could easily beat a pilot on level 101 but you never know...
amplificated
5th November 2012, 12:28 AM
Hmm... I'm pretty sure personal ability is skill. It may also be the ability to learn faster in the circumstance, but regardless, that's still a skill too.
Defjukie16
5th November 2012, 03:35 AM
I'm talking about the level you're on in WipEout HD, the number of your rank. let me rephrase that, "Well your level in rank does factor in the races but personal ability is truly the key."
Colonel
5th November 2012, 10:23 AM
I think it's worth remembering that there are loads of hardcore HD players that don't come on here. And loads that visit as guests, but don't post. As long as you're polite and courteous to people you'll always get on fine.
In fact the other week I had a really funny encounter with somebody in an Elim room. The lad who beat me (can't remember his name) send me a pretty abrasive message, lording it up "You got pwned sucker!!" or something . Over the course of our conversation I ground him into submission by basically being really nice, and refusing to argue.
Eventually he had no choice but reciprocate, and we got on just fine. One nil.

5th November 2012, 12:18 PM
Just started the online yesterday for the first time and while I didn't have any messaged conversations with people, the experience was pretty great. Nobody trashing each other in messages, no rage quitting, some good long sessions... all in all a very enjoyable experience. It was also a pleasant surprise to find I wasn't finishing at the bottom of every race which is what I had expected coming into it. I'm still not a fan of how luck based 'weapons on' matches are which put me near last a few times and other times let me beat clearly superior pilots with 4-5 seconds to spare. It keeps the matches interesting I guess.
The only thing I'd mention is give me a few seconds after you switch tracks (not naming names). At Phantom I lamely can't use Icarus effectively on every track, and it'd be nice if I was given a few seconds to switch ships if I need to. It's odd we're not able to do that in the 15 second count down.
Oh and is the lobby I see international? I only had one chance to select a server region, but that lobby seemed to have people from everywhere.
Oryx Crake
5th November 2012, 01:53 PM
the lobbies are international and well the countdown starts on it's on (if you get 15 seconds that's what has happened otherwise it's 5 seconds) after a while, a very short while if you have 8 players in the lobby though I'd suggest picking a ship you can play with on all tracks comfortably, as icaras doesn't really give you much of an edge, ship choice is pretty much all about personal preference, especially on phantom.
try adding some people you feel like racing with from wipeoutzone though and you'll definitely find some good conversations :)
Ω
5th November 2012, 09:00 PM
Ah, so that's what's happening, do the maps cycle randomly too then?
With the physics changes I'll probably end up switching back over to Harimau. I've noticed Icarus lost its definitative pre-patch advantage now that air breaking makes you lose so much more speed. I preferred the psuedo-drifting system in place before... I suppose this makes better handling ships more viable now that I should be primarily using standard turning, but it's still a pain to relearn the sharp corners.
My PSN is temporary and is more of a joke account to learn the new physics before I go for my run. That said, you can add me if you want as it's always nice to play with some familiar faces. ID is ToMyFallenHomies.
Edit: ...I can't do this ever again. Anyways Icaras still feels like the way to go.

I think I've raced most of you before. You're all very nice people. :) See you on the tracks sometime ;)
dreadofmondays
7th November 2012, 12:55 PM
Regarding the 15 second counter: I'm not sure how many people are aware but it's a real pain for server hosts. It's supposed to start the game automatically if the host idles for a little while, but it doesn't actually check if you are idle. So the host ends up going into the menus to change their ship or the game settings, but after 5 or so seconds the counter starts on it's own, forcefully taking them out of the menus and back to the main screen, where they have to deactivate the counter and try again. This happened to me. :x
Bollywood_Bandit
7th November 2012, 05:44 PM
A small correction.
The countdown timer won't start if the host changes the game settings. but it will if he wants to change ships. Odd.

sheepgirl is not a group of players ! it's one girl ( or guy ) also goes under the name of weapongirl. you say not the toughest player? I disagree. she is tough and relentless. If you happen to eliminate her ( which I did once) she will come after you. and when she gets you ,will email you " Kiss" lol she must have alot of frustration inside. Since I opened this thread, I've played with sheepgirl and the xx333s. At least from what I can remember the messages between them and me were all positive and nice.
All I want to say is: In Wipeout is enough room for different styles of playing the game and you don't have to play with people you don't like.
I don't think my words will reduce any new threads bashing on a specific person, but keep in mind someone could write the same about you. ;)
All in all, I've not met an unfriendly Wipeouter yet.
