Avalon: Phoenix - On Auricom's Secret Service

Oh. It's you. It's been a long time. How have you been?

Well first of all, a warm welcome back to everyone. Whatever your stance was during the outage of the Playstation Network (and quite honestly I've heard enough about it to sicken me, so no more discussion of it in this thread or to me), the important thing is that it's back, we're back, and we have the online world at our fingertips once more behind the sticks of our beloved AG-Ships.

With the return of so many great pilots, and good friends to the scene, I thought it only right to make amends for the disaster last month when the PSN crash coincided with the day I'd planned to run Avalon: Thunderbolt. With that not going ahead as forecasted. I have to admit I felt somewhat disheartened and guilty that I didn't get it running.

Well, with the return of so many pilots, and the potential influx of new ones if KGB's information that WipEout HD Fury will be offered as one of the free games that PSN users can get as compensation for the time out, it struck me as a good time to re-boot Avalon in the more condensed format I had thought of before. Also with the re-boot comes naming systems, so all future Avalons will be named after types of mythical flying beasts. A Phoenix seems the appropriate start. ;)

So, to those of you who either need a recap or need to know what Avalon is - it's essentially a friendly meeting of pretty much every Wiper who ever took up the games for some standardised races and some good old fun. The idea of these series is going to be a full day of WipEout - on every platform you can get it, play it yourself, play it with friends, play it with us online. If you have 2097 or Pure or Pulse, we want you to join in Avalon. Post stories of your games, videos of your time trials, and pics of the best typos in the chat room.

There will be both Flash and Phantom rooms running, though it seems that the majority of Flash rooms won't be as newbie friendly as I hoped. In fact, I'm beginning to think opening this event to everyone was a bit of a mistake.

Colonel__Gadaffi has very kindly offered to help host some Eliminator and Zone Battle events - I will defer you to him for those matters, as I probably won't be hosting many of those, nor keeping records. I will store the details of the differences between Amateur and Elite Eliminators - the Zone Battles will mostly speak for themselves, though I suggest that barrel rolls are kept on. Keep the target fluctuating as well, don't keep it at 55.

If you're hunting for me online during the day, I will be flying a Zone Battle Qirex Fury.

Avalon Competitions:

Grand Prix - 2x 5 Lap Phantom Race - 1 with weapons, 1 without - Pilot Assist Off - Barrel Roll On - Weapon Hints Off

Stunt Run - 1x 4 Lap Flash Race - Weapons On - Pilot Assist Off - Barrel Roll On - Weapon Hints On

Endurance - 20 Lap Phantom Race - Pilot Assist Off - Barrel Roll On - Weapon Hints Off

Demolition Derby - Rapier Eliminator - Target is 100 x (Number of players in Room) - Pilot Assist Off - Barrel Roll Off - Weapon Hints Off

Awesome logo, Oryx, completely forgot that the Avalon Logo was an avian of some description. :D Make it smaller and we could use it as the title with DP and kanar's blessing.

I've been informed by a Colonel of the Gadaffi clan that he will be hosting Eliminators and Zone Battles this Avalon. I've put down some guidelines for Amateur and Elite events - feel free to add 'Pro' events in as well for Rapier class if need be. I'll also be running a few endurance races over the day, though not as many as everyone might want unfortunately. I'll probably do one after every sixteen races. And then go for a drink most likely.

Good to see you're all ready to go, and don't worry SpeedKang, sending you an invite as soon as I'm back on the PS3.

Also, was thinking of having a WipEout trivia/pub quiz game over PSN chat, or maybe skype at some point... maybe during the day as a break, or perhaps before or after? Thoughts?

Just an update for everyone, I have now transferred ownership of the Avalon Social Group to Challenger, so he's completely in charge of it all now. For those newer members who may be unaware, I used to run Avalon after Kanar decided to step down, and Challenger took over from me when I couldn't do it anymore.

With a new leader comes new opportunities, so I'd urge everyone to check out the Social Group and make it more active.

one question challenger, why do yo feel the need to break it down to amateur, pro and elite events? i and many others specialise in venom n flash mode n to call flash amateur is a bit of an insult in my opinion! why not just call it what it is,flash, rapier n phantom? rant over:naughty

ion harvest
19th May 2011, 09:26 PM
I agree with Slow-Train. Lots of Phantom pilots struggle agains Flash pilots in Flash rooms. It doesn't make sense calling flash speed amateur. I like Slow-Trains suggestion because its more accurate.

Challenger #001
20th May 2011, 06:58 AM
Possibly because I was intending the Flash rooms to be FOR Amateur pilots who can't do Phantom rooms. But if you just want to your Stunt Runs, then fine. Changed the settings. I don't deny that there are pilots who can do amazing tricks at Venom and Flash, but that's not racing, it's showboating. They're Red Arrows, not Air Racers.

Colonel
20th May 2011, 10:13 AM
For the Elim / Zone Battle room I figured we'd just run with what I proposed for Avalon: Thunderbolt. There should be a healthy gap between sessions to enable people to join in with the other events taking place, and I've set it up so that the events should progress in difficulty / intensity over the 24hrs.

Times are subject to change, as I'm unsure what time this Avalon is starting, but I know "Thunderbolt" was scheduled for a 7am start, so I've pencilled that in.

7.00am Saturday: Flash Eliminator. HD tracks. 200 – 260 target (dependent on number of players).

11.00am: Zone Battle. HD tracks (plus zone tracks). 40 - 45 target (dependent on difficulty of track).

3.00pm: Rapier Eliminator. All tracks. 200 – 280 target.

7.00pm: Zone Battle. FURY tracks (plus zone tracks). 45 – 50 target.

11.00pm: Phantom Eliminator. All tracks. 200 - 300 target.

3.00am Sunday: Zone Battle. All tracks. 50 - 55 target.

I agree phantom takes a special breed of speed freak, but to say flash or venom is amateur I don't think is right or fair... I mean venom or flash pilots have trouble with the speed that comes with phantom, And I, for example have problems with how slow everything comes at slower speeds... Venom/flash from what Ive seen dont do great at higher speeds( but there are plenty Ive seen that are good at them all) And I've seen many phantom pilots get their asses haded to them by good flash pilots in flash races most of the time. Everyone has their area of specialization. I would say phantom is more difficult overall, but gaining air for BR'S on slower classes can be such a pain that the difficulty level isn't THAT far apart...JMO.

Oryx Crake
20th May 2011, 04:47 PM
Guys Guys I think you're taking this too seriously ^^; I agree that flash and venom isn't just "showboating" I was a predominatly flash pilot for a long time myself before I found woz.
That being said I'd like to add that, if you're gonna blame anyone, blame me, I was the one who suggested flash beginner rooms a little while back where as I believe ace flo has been running regular avalon flash rooms for quite a lot longer than that. With that in mind I think it's safe to assume that when Chall speaks of flash beginner rooms it is in fact about a special kind of flash room.

The discussion of whether or not flash is for "amateurs" is one I think we've been having for a long while yes? and I believe there are many such discussions, like whether or not weapons on races are about luck or skill or whether or not green races are fair and so on and so forth...

Er... finding it a little hard to be concise today sorry about that...
Anyway the point is that it's all about opinions. I have many opinions about weapons on/off, rapier vs phantom etc.(none of which I think are worth fighting over) but they are all my opinions and I welcome disagreement thus there's no point fighting about it.
I get that some might feel slighted when someone else says they play amateur speeds but again it's not worth fighting about it, lets just have fun eh?

p.s.
Sorry about the long reply there...

Well hopefully not David. The first round of Elims should hopefully be done in a couple of hours, so there's a nice break before the first Zone Battle sesh. I've tried to pace it so that there are breaks throughout the day, but the last couple of sessions will be longer ones.

I appreciate not many people are mad enough to do the full 24hrs, but it's something I'd really like to do, as a personal test of endurance. My girlfriend (sorry, fiance!) will be seriously pissed off with this to be honest. She's off work all that weekend which is unusual, and I'm going to spend half of it playing Wipeout, and the other half sleeping!

You are not the only one Colonel, my PS3 also gets very warm the last 10 days and do some random freezes.

Colonel
27th May 2011, 11:28 AM
Something I wanted to mention about tomorrow, with regards to public / friends only rooms. Eliminator sadly has a couple of people playing who are renowned cheats (don't ask me how or why, but they've managed it and are unplayable as a result). It also has a couple of abusive idiots who give everybody a hard time. With that in mind would it be okay if I made the Elim rooms "friends only", and asked the other players to invite friends of theirs and so on? Also anybody in the Avalon Lounge can give somebody a shout if they want an invite or a friend request.

I know this is far from ideal, and seems to go against the inclusive nature of the day, but I don't want the games to be ruined by these undesirables.

Any thoughts?

Challenger #001
27th May 2011, 11:39 AM
Oh dear... more bad news. :(

I think that might be best, Gadaffi, unless you're willing to just ignore the cheats and play the eliminators public to let everyone in. I think it should be your call as eliminator chief, but I would try and keep it public until you know there's an issue. In which case, feel free to invite your clique of eliminators to a less open room. :)

Also, Sweden vs Scotland is happening Saturday at 22:00 GMT (23:00 Stockholm Time). Scotland will be hosting the Forward HD tracks, Sweden the Reverse HD Tracks. We'll decide upon the endurance races when we get to them.

Colonel
27th May 2011, 11:47 AM
You're absolutely right Chal, and I'm probably being too pessimistic by expecting trouble. I'll leave all rooms public unless a problem occurs.

I can count on one hand the number people I refuse to play , so the chances of them appearing are quite low anyway (certainly never seen them on here before :)). It's all good.

Cool, is there a tunnel that connects them in some way? Or would one normally take a quick flight is what I'm wondering... Its interesting to see how Europeans even though they are different countries, can travel to other countries so easily. I mean the US is so big that most of us even when we go on vacation its just to another part of the US. You guys get a much bigger dose of culture and learnt o respect each other's heritage more and I like that.

hi greeny, fair enough you dont have as many racers compared to france uk or germany, but you have idreaper, wizardplay and if you count canadians you also have rezatron!

I'm taking a flight. :) £28.73 from Gatwick to Arlanda with norwegian.com

As of yet, there's no tunnel linking the two, I'd have to go through France, Belgium, Netherlands and Denmark if I wanted to go straight to Sweden without using a plane or boat.

Also, greenymac, best talk to Kyonshi - he's head of team USA/Canada/Mexico, the whole of North America really. I'm not sure there's a 'mercenaries' team yet, but could always be a possibility if a team wants a match and can't find a full opposing squadron.

One idea I did have is to have a 'themed' WipEout match, mostly set around the Napoleonic Eras, so it would be France and Denmark vs UK and Sweden. I think if you can come up with some justification for a 4v4, you should go for it. ;)

EDIT - IMPORTANT INFO AND WARNING: I've been having twitches in my left eye starting last night and this morning if I stare at a computer screen for too long. I may not be able to do much WipEout at a time if that's the case. Either that or I'll have to get an eyepatch or the like. I'll do my bst to keep this going though.

I sure wished there were more american wipeout players. The few there are seems to be quite far from here anyway.i wish that there were more SE Asia players around here. I seem to be the only one playing the game from SG.

Alright. So now that I've finally woken up, I think some thanks are in order.

Thank you to everyone who joined me in the Avalon Lounge and on the tracks yesterday, so shout outs go to SpeedKANG89, Qen-San, Aka-Sho, Dark_Phantom_89, P_Denton, Tiduch, lync, Squall_lst, taigou, adam2803, cgjung, tommilesuk, Rezatron, conankun, RX-1981, hidefade, INUMAYUGE777, Oli_kun, PONTA012, Axlotl, Sai-Fu, Rennfisch, Angus900, LadyLXXVI, blue-banjo, matplayer1, Novaharvest, maradonna74, Jonisdaponis, ID_7of9, The_Wind-upBird, kieren1888, JFthebestJan, IDReaper, Greenymac, nutcase259, fdmstryct, DreamyElf, Oryx_Crake, Aiirwolf, UB3R-BRENDAGE, MegaGeeza22, TarotCardKiller, runingman111, erich123, CarLeo79, yeldar2097, zero3growlithe, vecarlos, ACE-FLO, JPA2097, sidewinder2131, Frailavi, R3BU5ER and morfeo378 to name just the ones I can remember racing. I'm sure there were many more of you, and I apologise if I forgot you.

Special thanks go to Colonel__Gadaffi for running eliminator and Zone Battle events, though I think I speak for all of us when we ask you to take a less intensive day next time, and keep away from the PS3 for long periods of time.

Also thanks go to kanar once again for hosting Avalon and from showing up to prove he's not lost the touch with his Icaras HD.

Novide has made some videos of the event, which I'm sure he'll be posting the links to soon. I'll be uploading my own videos of Scotland vs Sweden as soon as I can.

I'm sorry I wasn't there for large chunks of the day - real life did its' best to sabotage Avalon for me, and a series of matches in the evening meant that as I understand, there weren't any Phantom hosted rooms - and I'm extremely sorry for that. I'll make sure to appoint a back-up hoster for those as well. I'm sorry to have disappointed you all... hopefully I can make it up to you with a June Avalon.

Peace.

ext time I shouldhost the GMT late night phantom room as that's early evening for me. I wanted t do more phantom last night but I raced rapier instead and gave a few pointers to a new pilot for an hour or so. Overall avalon was reat fun! hope to do it again!

What a cracking day! Thanks to Challenger for putting it together and to everybody else involved. I really enjoyed hosting the Eliminator and Zone Battle rooms and would love to do it again for the next one, although next time I'd probably drop the flash Elim session and just do Rapier and Phantom, with maybe two ZB events. Nothing against the flash one, it was good, I'd just like to have more time to join in with other things taking place.

I did manage to get some phantom SRs in, and a quick flash session with Ace (or as I now call him - Fkingbastardshitoff Bombs Ace ;)).

The highlight of the day for me personally was the Phantom Eliminator room. Absolutely bloody mental! Woke me up so much, I don't think I've had an online experience as intense as that.

The whole day was great fun, especially the Avalon Lounge, which was as rewarding as the races themselves :beer

My only regret was that it wound down sooner than expected, but I think the CL Final and who knows what else, it's understandable. Oh and don't worry about me Chal, I've done much worse with my weekends ;).

I managed to get quite a bit of video, I'll upload it this week. Til next time...
