Hi guys,
I just wonder if you would give me some feedback on a model I am developing!
The basic idea is to make a 1.44 scale die cast model of one of the wipeout vehicle. So far nothing exceptional except that the design is made by me and would be 3d printed. The next step is a bit tricky, and I am still looking for solutions, how to paint it!
The beauty of it is to develop a shelf integrating one of this magnetic base developed by levitron (sure somebody had already thought about it :) )
See the link one fellow already applied the principle to the falcon millennium.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sues1grY4g
The idea is to integrate at least four bases and have four models levitating on a shelf (would look kick ass).

Here below an animation I have done based on that 3d model I am developing. I did get away from the original design, I am a huge fan of the original but I wanted to contribute no to reproduce.

Let me know what you think or if anyone is interested to join the project.

Well, that video you posted was awesome. :3

You could use a method called stereolithography, If you have the means to do it. The model can be painted in any way you see fit with the plastic the STL process uses.

Wow the levitating platform is incredible XD

What kind or equipment do you have access to? that will make it easier for us to help you. like Rapid Prototyping Machines, Vacuum formers, etc.

as for painting. does it need to be painted. it could be alot easier to print off decals on vinyl and attach. as the ships have a lot of flat surfaces you could design high quality decals to attach in sections, possibly painting in tiny details at the end? i suppose it depends how far you want to go :D

edit: or alternatively spray paint a chrome colour or whatever and decals over it, so theres tiny chrome etc accents between the body pannles, Damnit! im getting carried away :g

Shapeways (http://www.shapeways.com/) is a rather good site for 3D printing, with a high level of detail 0.2mm in some cases (http://www.shapeways.com/materials/material-options), and also allows you to open up your own "shop" so other people can buy 3D prints of your design.
oh, and prices are by material used, not bounding box size, so, to save money, make it hollow :P

Thank you guys for the replies.
I already planned to use Shapeways to 3d print the model. Cheers anyway omega329.

I thought about decals and vinyls but I think it may look cheap at the end, but I will give it a go. Using stencil I might get some good result! Cheers Nutcase:259

I am looking up at the stereolithography thank for the lead mdhay.

What do you guys are thinking of the vehicle itself, any comment to improve it?
Colour wise, shape wise and on....
Can share the 3d file (3ds max) as well if somebody wants it.

No Problem ;)
used well you can get some sick effects with vinyl. like NASCAR. or The honda 'my earth dream' car, although there life size

not sure if i can open it? i have prodesktop 8. maybe if you print screen we can get the gist. :D

Yeah, get some screeshots of it, and I'll see what I can do. Although I can only work with SU8 for now.

By the way, I looked at Nutcase's post, STL and Rapid Prototyping are the same. :p

Ah but Rapid Prototyping is just a general term where as Sterolithography is an actual type of 'RP':) :g

pedantic? absolutely ! :lol

its very expensive though isnt it? or am i just poor :D 8)

If they make the model and give it to you before you pay, it's free. ;)

This thread is so cool. Especially the video, and the 3-D printing stuff. Good luck with your project metronum.

That reminds me, I could've had the chance to get some of my sketchup models made like this, shame I left before that could happen. If you like, I can export them to .stl (if you can work with them), and see if you like what I made? If I can't have them myself, you may as well have the oppurtunity. :)

Okay will make a couple of renders and post them tomorrow.

The cost won't be that crazy, see for yourself:
£100 to £150 for the model
£50 budgeted for the paint and/or vinyls
£70 for the magnetic base

So about £200 if I get lucky.
Although I think it is the ultimate must-have wipeout gizmo for all the fan outhere. Plus look at any Starwars miniature and you would find the prices going from £200 to £2000, easy. So it aint that bad for a kick ass anti gravity wipeout toy :)

The ultimate trick would be to manage to add couple of neo magnet on the side of the vehicle to stabilize the levitaton and eventually success to make the model take off by itself when the base is turn on, instead of having to set it up yourself.
Would be awesome to see the vehicle finding its gravitational orbit by itself!

Anyway I keep you in touch guys!

PS: do you think I could find original blue prints from WipeOut HD, I may consider to do a feisar one so I would compare my design to theirs... Crazy I know!

I Suppose you could ask Studio liverpool? they might have basic CAD models that you could get if you asked nicely lol.

failing that they have a flickr account with some detailed pics of the FESAR fury
ill give you the link tomorrow if ya want it ;)

I have some replicas of old Wipeout models:
Feisar from Wipeout 3 and Wip'eout".
AG-Systems from Wipeout 3.
Piranha (A fusion between both Pure and Pulse ships).
And an unfinished Icaras from Pure.
I also have all the DXF files of the original Pulse ships.

If you want any of those I'd be glad to send you.
Just tell me the file format.

I've tried to look around to approach Studio Liverpool, but it aint that simple. They kinda been absorbed by Sony and are probably just a small team somewhere in Soho. Still though cant find a email to contact them...for now!

Nutcase:259: Found that flikr Wipeout Pure blue print, awesome dude :)

Xpand: Yeah I would be glad to have a look at these model, especially the Pulse one. Can u export a 3ds? or Dxf would do the trick :)
Cheers

I'll send you the files next tuesday, that's when I'll have the time to do that! 8)

My post on this thread shows most of the ships:

The rest is in my profile page, in the "wipeout renders" gallery.

Dude, well done, nice renders, well modeled!
I really fancy the piranha one, let me have a look at it.

Found another 3d printer which paints models from 3d file:

First off metronum, welcome to the board!

Secondly, I want to reassure you no matter how much you spend on making that model, it is well worth it. Especially if it's something you love and put a lot of blood (don't cut yourself ;) ), sweat and tears. Not only that something that is truly one of a kind and that is yours!

A buddy of mine made me a papercraft model of a FEISAR craft. He modified it a bit so that he was able to use magnets. Something you are considering on using, so I wanted to share the results of that in an old post I made (http://www.wipeoutzone.com/forum/showthread.php?p=69619#post69619).

After reading that post again, it makes me want to revisit on creating track as the base with LEDs.

Any ways, back on topic. I guess the idea you have is to make it float instead of hang like mine does. Maybe more like this custom Remote (http://www.theforce.net/latestnews/story/Build_Your_Own_Jedi_Training_Remote_134943.asp) someone made from the Star Was universe.

Whatever the case I get a kick seeing my FEISAR defy gravity and sway to and fro from any drafts that come near it.

I'm going to keep my eye on this thread and look forward on seeing the results.

Also thanks for the links. Sure sparking some ideas on my end!

Wow, well impressed! Awe-inspiring, Hat off guys:)
Weird I wanted to use the same device but then found out about the magnetic base.
It is a really nice craft you guys manufactured and as you say it worth every penny as Sony never supplied us any gizmo to satisfy our appetite :mad::mad::mad:
DAMM u sony.... we need to find our own way!

Anyway right now I am getting my model into Wirefusion, so you guys will be able do give me real feedback (check here whats wirefusion: http://www.demicron.com/gallery/mseries/mseries.html)
Thought it was way better to look at my model.

As I said the real challenge for me is the painting (but seems to be sorted with this new manufacturer) and also to get the ship taking off and landing when switch on and off :)

Thanks for the support man, appreciate.

And thank you Xpand for the model I am looking at them right now, look awesome, just need couple of tweak...

Keep u in touch
C ya

No problem dude! Those are the original in-game Pulse models, so they're a bit low poly...
