I don't think we complained enough.

I agree with SR, they were not even interested in earning revenue from us. If they were, I would think that they'd have released a premium DLC that would remove the ads for the users who didn't want them. Very easy, very simple thing to do that would have earned both goodwill and money. Yet, they did not do this.

Who knows what they really wanted with these ads? They were added haphazardly and carelessly, without focus. I don't think they were even testing it on us, because then they would have wanted information from us. They would have asked us to reply to them directly, sent us surveys and asked us to put check marks in boxes and rate our satisfaction 1-5. Nope, not even close.

AFAIK, Studio Liverpool never even had its own website with any contact information to speak of. This studio and its assets were not cared for on the business and marketing side AT ALL, seemingly. This restructuring was not unforeseen. It's an incomprehensible marvel that there were creative passionate people there who were still able to create something great.

As I expected, they have not done anything to change the fact that these ads can be blocked through the simplest means by anyone and without violating the terms of agreement. They may not care even about that.

Hey everyone!
It's been a while since I have been here!
First time this year - not good.

Anyway.
I strongly dislike the ad's; I don't know if anyone else has this problem, however on rare occasions, since the ad's have been added to the game, it will crash after about three seconds of loading.
If I reset the PS3, it seems to resolve the issue for a few hours, but it comes back again sometimes.
Because of this, its now rare I play HD.
However, the instant I hear that the ad's have been removed in an update, I will download the update, and be back for more races! :D

@Connavar: lol, no. Ads have stopped me playing the game. Not again, please!

... IMO it was probably always more about testing this out on HD than earning revenue from it.

I do think the same. They (Sony) just wanted to establish an ad infrastructure
technology-wise.

Btw; No ads since about three months over here.

After being off this game for a few months I forgot how annoying they were! :brickwall: I dont know how many times I watched the same bloody advert, and it also stopping the loading time while it finished. If it was just once when you race first it it would be bearable, but every race just takes the mick.

I don't know if it's just my old 40GB PS3, but the ads are slowing down my load times significantly. I always seem to load last. I never see the 'waiting for blahblah' ingame so I assume everyone has to wait for me loading... It doesn't help that I get ads every 2nd race. :/

And there's definitely one film I'll never watch this year. :@

not guaranteed for the bluray version... meh :D Yep, i got the bluray.

don't mind the ads anyway. Thing is, I'm surprised Sony haven't got their advertising agency selling more ads? I used to work in advertising and beleive me, they shoulda sold a heck of a lot more.

So what happened? Is it a case of Sony being bombarded by PS3 users, complaning that 'State Farm Insurance' advertising is pissing of gamers who live with their parents? :lol Basically, was it a case of the advertising not targeting to the right market? I think so.

When we were first inundated with ads, they were totally random. The first few pages of this thread gives yo an idea of what I mean. The eads were sold to anyone who would pay...

Then, Through January, the ads were stopped. Did anyone notice that? What I think happened was that Sony demanded their ad agency to sell advertising to companies which were promoting products/entertainment which its PS3 target customer would probably consider...

Since then, they've managed to sell 2 campains only:

Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief and Clash of the Titans... meh. I'm not too worried about the ads - an ad a month is do-able, so long as it aint something totally annoying like 'State Farm Insurance" or worse...

Peace :)

I decided to do it Koleax's way and reinstall the game. The ads themselves aren't really that annoying but I had to watch them every 2nd or 3rd race when playing online. My fat PS3 usually makes me load last anyway, so I didn't want to hold people up any longer waiting for me as the ads lengthen my load time. >_< Do Slims handle them better? I wouldn't mind ads if they didn't affect load times...

But I think the way they were implemented could've been better too. It's like finding an ad leaflet on every second page of a book you bought while reading... which happens to the be the same leaflet for last 100 pages. :dizzy

I dislike how game media is treated differently from books/tv/DVDs/BluRay. An ad in the middle of a BlueRay you bought would be unthinkable... but alas, I'm starting to rant... so thanks to Koleax for the solution to this. :D

Wow. After waiting six months(!) for a reply from Sony I finally got one ("We will get back to you within 24 hours" my ass). Was it any good? Of course not. It was the same evasive bs they always come up with, and it didn't answer my question (Which was basically : "Can anyone quote the part of the tos/user agreement that allows you to put ads in my game "after the fact"). :brickwall
I started with Sony Norway, got sent to Nordisk Film (distributor) who sent me to Sony UK, who sent me to a different Sony UK department, who sent me to a guy at scee who sent me this :

Thank you for your e-mail regarding WipEout HD which has been forwarded to me at our Head Office. Please accept my apologies for the delay in responding to your query.

I understand from your e-mail that you feel aggrieved at the presence of dynamic advertising within WipEout HD. Sony Computer Entertainment feels that the addition of dynamic advertising (whether static, promotional placement or dynamic advertisements), has the potential to add depth and realism to the gaming experience.

WipEout HD was our first foray into the world of in-game dynamic advertising, so it has been a learning experience. We believe that the un-intrusive nature of the advertisements, which are only present during the game’s loading stages, further the overall experience and promote contextually relevant content to our audiences.

Having said that, I appreciate that you feel that they intrude on your experience and have passed your comments to our development teams for their review should further in-game advertisements be planned for forthcoming releases.

He then finishes off by giving me the email and phone number for Sony Norway in case I have "further inquiries"...
Someone please restrain me:bomb

This is just sad. Funny, but sad.

I'm pretty sure the marketroids really cannot see the harm in the ads and genuinely find them un-obtrusive. But how this "person" even dare to call them "contextually relevant" is beyond even my bleak world view. I completely fail to see the connection between Rocky and WO.

Oh... wait... :mr-t <-- there it is!

I guess it depends on the country and the national law but holy **** at this kind of practice. I knew that some online billboards were "on sale" in some games, but loading times? Really?

The world of tomorrow seems bleak. Although I guess that a creative marketodroid could come up with "well, stuffing ads in every last place possible is very coherent with this game who presents a dystopian future composed of ultra-consumerism and death races".

EDIT: I will probably rage pretty hard if there are ads in my game this week...

It's hard for me to be indignant about the in-game ads. I'm absolutely fine with them happening in online games, because online infrastructure costs money to run, and it's not like I am doing anything else valuable with my time while waiting to get beat by all of you online.

Seeing them happen during racebox loading screens pissed me off a good bit. I suppose I could just sign out of PSN to avoid it, but still, they were a bit much.

Ultimately though, if it means more Wipeout, and that SCEE is paying attention to Wipeout enough to do ad sales and revenue promotion, then I am all for it. The SL layoffs really bothered me because to me I felt it meant a long term coma for the Wipeout Franchise. However, I see developments in the online ad space as a positive thing for the future of the franchise.

Whatever gets me more Wipeout games, I'll be fine with.

If nothing else it shows someone still thinks there's life left in the old game or maybe just an extremely persistent salesperson.

Off Topic* Not a bad advert though, I'll go and see it when it comes out, I've read that people have been walking out in disgust and throwing up at one particular part of the film.

Koleax
11th January 2011, 08:16 PM
What yeldar said. It's easy, legal, and simple.

However...

Yesterday someone posted a method on GameFAQs to block the ads using custom firmware.

Specifically, using GeoHot 3.55 (which is making very big news), you can open a hex editor inside the PS3 and edit the URLs that Wipeout HD uses to downloaded ads from "http" to "hxxp" or something which will of course break them. You can log on to PSN ad-free.

You can also simply navigate to the folder where they're downloaded and delete the ads. They're BLINK video files and apparently this will keep you ad-free for a while, but the game will redownload the ads eventually, so that's why dude posted the above method.

Darkdrium777
11th January 2011, 10:26 PM
VERY interesting. This is why I like CFW.

And I think you mean Bink video. ;)

Koleax
12th January 2011, 08:36 AM
Yeah, Bink, whatever. :)

Also I read that thread wrong. Supposed to be "in" a hex editor and not "is" a hex editor. My eyes are getting bad as I get older. :P

Still haven't tried it yet. I haven't connected to PSN since installing GeoHot, even though I hear it works fine. I don't want my console to be logged on their servers as suspicious.

All I want is to run the Wipeout HD Preview Edition, but that's a topic for another thread.

It may be possible to edit the file using custom firmware, then go back to a "legit" firmware, and continue on.

FlameCrow
12th January 2011, 01:10 PM
Preview Edition? Is that like a beta?

I haven't been seeing ads lately, did they roll out new ones again? x.x

Darkdrium777
12th January 2011, 03:31 PM
It's a DVD of WipEout HD that was sent to journalists for reviewing. The essential difference is that Zone mode would feature (we assume) the old graphics effects (http://www.videogamer.com/videos/wipeout_hd_wipeout_zone_mode_gameplay.html).
Unfortunately that preview version would only work on debug consoles, and since the general populace doesn't have those it would only be a paperweight to those that happen to own that version of the game.
Now with CFW, that may change and it may be possible to make the preview version work.

Again, very interesting. Assuredly if I can fix my PS3 it will go in CFW while the slim will be used online. I don't have WipEout HD preview but there will be other interesting uses certainly.

Koleax
13th January 2011, 12:03 PM
Ads vary considerably depending on what country you're in. They're like billboards. Sometimes a billboard will go unused in certain areas, used in others.

I just found out that the preview version requires a USB key to be inserted as well as a debug console. Man it's going to take a very clever person to get it work on a normal PS3, even with CFW.

Darkdrium777
13th January 2011, 11:17 PM
I'm wondering right now if anyone knows how to block a web address from the router firewall level. I'm sure it's possible, I just don't know how myself.
Theoretically, with the information provided by this CFW hack, we could get the http web addresses that are used to download the streaming ads, block them at the router's firewall (if there is no possible conflict) and then there would be this:
1. No need for CFW (Just block the addresses in the firewall instead of erasing them from the PS3)
2. No need to log out of PSN before starting the game.

No more ads? Sounds fun, so anyone know how to block these? ;)

mdhay
14th January 2011, 08:40 AM
Shouldn't you be able to access your router settings somewhere, then check on them for any ideas?

amplificated
14th January 2011, 10:08 AM
The options routers have available are dependant on brand and model, but website/address filters should be common and pretty basic to use.

The hardest part is figuring out the address.

mic-dk
14th January 2011, 10:08 AM
First you should check whether the IPs/hosts are used for anything else WO related, so you don't inadvertently block something important.

If the IPs are not used it should be pretty straight forward to block them on the IP/hostname.
If they are used elsewhere you'll need to block the whole URL somehow, but then your router need some form of proxy functionality. If it does, it should be a piece of cake though.

Maybe your router has some form of "parental control" that can be used for this? Depending on what router you have YMMV quite a lot :)

Luckily I haven't seen ads for ages, I pray it continues so...

Question:

Can I play the game offline and not see the ads (not connected to the internet at all) while still saving my race times and scores? Will the scores update online next time I go online?

Thanks -

Woopzilla
2nd March 2011, 08:11 PM
Yep, they will. But they will appear as "PLAYER" in the scoreboards instead of your name... that will fix itself too though if you go online. No problem.

The ads do appear when offline if you've already downloaded them (I think).

Only a complete re-intall of the game can remove the ads if you've already downloaded them accidentally! From then on you must be careful to sign out of PSN before loading the game... once the game has loaded you can sign in without fear.

Thanks for the response.

I just finished downloading the demo and the full game unlock, and now I'm waiting for the Fury add-on to download.

After everything gets installed and set-up, when should I update to 2.20? After the patch installs, is it best to just yank the ethernet cord out of the back to ensure I'm not signed in?

Edit: Is it safe to sign in once you are at the Main Menu?

Woopzilla
4th March 2011, 09:50 PM
Yes, it's safe to login anywhere on the menu after the game has finished all its loadings+animations etc.

About installing the patch... I think you return to the PS3 XMB menu after installing the patch and you don't actually need to be signed in to download it. You should be fine. My PS3 is online 24/7 with a wireless connection... you just need to avoid being signed in to PSN.

Find some decent sponsors that – ideally – fit to the overall game and show them on billboards on the track. No problem with that (as long as there are no whole tracks covered in Pepsi-Ads – WOPure I’m looking at you). I’m pretty sure people get excited about seeing Red Bull back in the game ;)

Or at least pull down the volume for that loading-screen-Ads :)

im not even getting the awful adverts, just an empty box like mega geeza said. but the loading times seem affected by the phantom advert :brickwall

@Nutty I'd go for it anyway mate, it looks like it's gonna be worth the beating ;)

@MegaGeeza yep that's a pretty good example of the kind of thing that isn't even worth putting up with to fund the game support lol

I don't have ads since very long time right now... have you tried to connect to the PSN only after having opened WOHD?

All these new users. I wish I could make it more obvious.

Turn off auto-sign in. Only sign in after you start the game. Never watch an ad again.

Start with a clean copy of the game to ensure you don't watch ads previously downloaded.
