View Full Version : Ps3 down!

Well I was playing one of my disc games today and I heard a distinct thud-ish sorta noise and the game froze. Restart the PS3 and now it won't read disks so :turd . Called Sony and went through the whole tech support and it is confirmed to be a Disk Read Error where the drive breaks. So now I wait on the box to send the PS3 into the service centre, and since its not under warranty its gonna cost me a cool $190.97CAN after taxes (OUCH :brickwall ).

So I stuck with WoW till my PS3 comes back. Hopefully they don't need to wipe the HDD but I backed up all the important saved data anyway. Still frustrating :frown:

Even worse is that Fury comes outs next week, ITS UNFAIR:!

I know your pain my friend :)
And in typical fashion bills stop me from sending it to repairs as early as id liked.

We're just letting them get a headstart with things :)

What model of PS3 is that RedScar?

RedScar
18th July 2009, 05:57 AM
40GB, which is apparently the one that DRE happens to the most.

So your BD drive is broken. Holy crap! http://www.consolewars.de/messageboard/images/smilies/m-sad5.gif

I friend of mine had the same problem, he replaced the laser of the drive just
for about 60 EUR (~ $94 CAN). The drive is built quite modular, one can easily
replace things. Getting the BD drive replaced by a specialty store cost about
150 EUR (~ $236 CAN) over here in germany. So $190 CAN isn't that bad.
I know, it doesn't help.... http://www.consolewars.de/messageboard/images/smilies/nixweiss.gif

Can't you rent a PS3 for the time being?

RedScar
18th July 2009, 06:51 PM
lol well its only the BD player that is broken, I can still play games loaded on my HDD (a la WOHD). That said, I still don't wanna even touch the thing so that when I send it in they have no way of saying I have broken it or done something against sony's rules so that they can't service it.

I bought the 40GB only because they were sold out of the 60 and if I wanted a 60 I would have had to wait 4-6 months for them to ship them. I want a 60 but hey, I wasn't complaining.

I'm not that bummed about the price. Yes it is a lot (truthfully it was 160 before taxes and with taxes here at 13% i have no idea how it gets to 190, should be like 10 less but I'm sure shipping added extra taxes), but considering I don't have a job (thx to no one hiring locally right now) and have Univ coming up in september this isn't what I want to be doing with my money.

If you want to DIY - and feel up for a drive South - swing by. I've got stuff in my basement that scares people. And non of it involves a gimp or a ball gag. (perhaps the scariest aspect of all) :lol

lol well its not like I have a warranty to void, but like I said money is tight atm so I'll have to pass.

I think a five fingered discount might be the best thing in your budget. Pinch another 40GB one off a pallet out the back of the store.

Tsk. And people were trying to convince me that only 360's had these failures. ;)

NightArh

360 dies more frequently especially old ones because of overheating :D

PS3 ded :frown:

Cracking open a console and replacing a given part is much easier than you think. If the machine is past warranty anyway, it's not like you're really going to be screwed by trying to fix it yourself... unless of course you can't and you end up having to send it out to Sony anyway :P Poke around online first and see if you can get any more specific detail on that type of problem- that way you know what you're trying to approach and you can get a better idea of what kind of replacement part you're trying to find... you may not even have to replace anything, but instead just re-attach a spring or lever or something in the drive. If it turns out to be an easy fix/replacement, it'll be a hell of a lot cheaper than sending it out to be done by Sony themselves.

RedScar
20th July 2009, 08:48 PM
If I open it, sony won't touch it to service it even if its past warranty.

So what model of PS3 do you recommend to buy? Is 40GB model not so reliable as other ones?

Luckily, mine's a new one. :D

Wait a minute... say WHAT?!?

Sort of on topic: Some PS3s happen to have errors - older 360s WILL have errors. *mumbles about 'piece-of-hardware-sh..'*

Well the Puralator Package to send my PS3 in FINALLY shows up yesterday, so I sent it off this morning, 3-4 Buisness days and I should have it so next tues/wed is when I'm expecting although earlier would rock. *Crys* hope you all aren't bored of Fury by the time I'm playing.

SonicChaos
22nd July 2009, 07:07 PM
Nah we shouldn't be. I have the newer 80GB model. It only freezes up in Online when viewing rooms and I move too fast. Hopefully they get it to you sooner.

Well I keep checking the "progress" of my repair, and it doesn't seem like any "progress" is actually being made. I don't give a crap if its the weekend when I'm paying $190.97, I want my PS3 back already.

RedScar

Good to hear. I was running on a composite cable before and I just bought an HDMI to see how it really looks. Let's just say I drooled for about an hour.

RedScar
3rd August 2009, 07:26 PM
lol ya, when I hooked my PS3 up to my computer monitor at 720p I was like o.O

Lance
3rd August 2009, 08:24 PM
I'm thinking that an HDMI cable will be the next thing I get [with the possible exception of a small USB flashdrive]. If my games already look this great with AV cable, I'll be drooling a lot more with real HD!

Rapier Racer
3rd August 2009, 09:49 PM
Yes, yes you will. Better get a bucket whilst your out buying that cable.

SonicChaos
4th August 2009, 03:06 PM
No kidding. Except I have it at 1080i not 720p. It was worth the $27 for the cable.

blackwiggle
4th August 2009, 03:28 PM
There is VERY little difference between 1080i and 1080p unless you are playing it back on a 3m wide screen.
Even then the difference is minimal.
Even with Blueray discs.

The difference between 720p to 1080i/1080p is visible [if you know what to look for] or over long term viewing you WILL spot the difference.

It's basically comes down to a a clarity of the picture.

The 1080i will still have it over 720p.

HDMI totally craps on component ,NO contest.
Beware that long runs of HDMI can cause problems [over 5m lengths]
You can get white sparkles if pushing it with cable length and HD.

Lance
4th August 2009, 03:43 PM
I have less than a meter between the console and the TV.

HDMI is that much better than component? I've seen Need For Speed, Pro Street running on component connected from my neighbor's 360 to my HDTV; it looked pretty damned good.

---------

I think [but am not absolutely certain] that the TV delays display until both interlaced fields are received, then puts them together in a single 'scan' cycle. If so, would this affect the clarity of the display in any way, or would it simply result in a lag of x number of milliseconds?

[BTW, my TV is a 19 inch Samsung that I sit less than a meter from.]

----

RedScar, did you get an expensive cable or what? Is there a significant difference in performance between cheap ones and notcheap ones?

----

Has anyone noticed a significant difference in image quality from a PS3 running at 1080 and an Xbox 360 running at 720P?

Rapier Racer
4th August 2009, 05:20 PM
To answer one of your questions I've seen countless comparisons saying an expensive HDMI cable is a waste of money.

Does the 360 run at 1080 at any point? Its not something I checked for but I could try a quick test if you like.

NightArh
4th August 2009, 09:51 PM
I saw the picture on 60' Pioneer display from PS3 connected with HDMI. Picture looks a little artificial but very clear. I think HDMI is a good solution to connect xbox360 or ps3 to full hd display. I liked the picture indeed :?
