View Full Version : Will Wipeout HD be at Leipzig Games Con?

Frances_Penfold

Do we have any indication yet? As several folks have pointed out, it seems like a natural place for Sony to unveil additional information about the game.

Wipeout HD isn't mentioned on this list but maybe it's not a final version?

Though if the epilepsy rumours were true, I doubt they could show it at the Con for fear of people having fits.

Sony Austria says NO COMMENT, read into it what you will. I think chances are pretty slim :(

by hoping that would not be a date style "Christmas 2008" (if release date announce there is)… much suspects that launch will certainly come between September and end of year thus this would be neither a surprise, nor an excellent news but the confirmation of an total delay of one year…

It will be at the convention in trailer form at the very least:

WipEout HD (GC-Trailer) (http://www.usk.de/64_Pruefdatenbank.htm?s=search&title=WipEout+HD&s.x=0&s.y=0&s=search)

That's a start - there's at least something to show off. Am I right in thinking that the trailer has been rated by the classifications board in Germany?

Oh this looks promising, a demo? OK so either they brought part of the game they fixed or the entire epilepsy thing was bollocks.

Ok, if I understood this there's supposed to be a video right? I can't see it.
Oder Ich spinne und es gibt keine video...
I really want to hear more :D Hopefully this text announcement will be followed by vids in full HD 1080p to get me even more excited than that darned trailer I keep watching over and over again on the 32". :robot

I don't understand a bit of German, but I am with Rapier Racer on this one-- the most exciting information from the site linked by newcomer Fiddlesworth (welcome to the WOZ, by the way :) ) is the indication of a DEMO!

Wonder if that will really materialize at the show?

rdmx
16th August 2008, 02:18 AM
Hate to burst your bubble but that demo is dated 'Prüfdatum: 14.08.2007' or 14th of August 2007. This was probably the demo from last year's GC.

RJ O'Connell
16th August 2008, 06:32 AM
Drat! Foiled again.

Hopefully that's not a sign that they aren't showing the game at all.

rdmx
16th August 2008, 07:00 AM
There will be at least a trailer as the title of that entry suggests - it is dated August 2008 as well.

Darkdrium777
16th August 2008, 09:16 PM
At the same time if we ask for a demo downloadable on the PSN Store, it could delay the game even more. :brickwall
This is really a tense situation Sony Liverpool. I hope you realize :g

Frances_Penfold

Well, you can bet your ass they are not gonna show a new trailer without having a build ready for the press to try out, so actually this is VERY good news! Combine that with my earlier report of Sony saying 'No Comment' to a GC08 appearance, and you've got yourself a winner! (in the past, they have clearly stated 'NO' when it wasn't appearing, so 'No Comment' has a high possibility of actally meaning 'Yes' ;) Strange world, I know...
Let's wait and see, in little more than 72 hours we'll know for sure. (Sony presser is Wednesday at 1700 CET.)

Darkdrium777
17th August 2008, 03:33 PM
I hope for their sake that they've got something to show. Else websites will be on fire with the lack of announcements of Wipeout HD, since they've already reacted quite a bit to the no-show at E3.
It's been too long Sony! Show a trailer!

RJ O'Connell
18th August 2008, 02:25 AM
Sony presser is Wednesday at 1700 CET.
Damn, I'll be starting my first class of college just then! Nothing should have a higher priority than the potential of new Wipeout! :g

Darkdrium777
18th August 2008, 02:36 AM
Will it be streamed live like E3? Or will there be some sort of recording of it?
Also, what does CET stand for? Anyone can translate for me in GMT +/- X? So I can make the correct calculations if it is streamed live :P

RJ O'Connell
18th August 2008, 02:38 AM
CET, as kanar explained:

-7 hours for Central time (Chicago, Dallas, Florence AL)
-6 hours for Eastern time (New York, Miami)

eLhabib
18th August 2008, 08:10 AM
CET stands for Central European Time, so that's GMT+1. I don't think there's a livestream of it, since press conferences on this year's GC are held directly at the respective booths. I'll be sure to report as soon as I have internets after the presser.

I've always said wipeout is a september game...
to be honest, PlayStation is pretty much a september system. The original PSX launched in sept. if im not mistaken and also many other classic psx games were virgo. Also wipeout games have been virgo before also. My bday is Sept 7th so I have been hoping for/expecting a sept release date on HD for a LONG time now.

Lance
18th August 2008, 10:42 PM
W3O was launched in the USA in September. The Dreamcast was launched in the USA in September. The twin towers of the World Trade Center were reverse-launched in September.

It's a seasonal transition month, so historically it became a time to start new advertising programs, car model years, and probably a driving force of it all, the new school year.

RJ O'Connell
18th August 2008, 10:48 PM
Oddly enough, XL was released in late September in the 'States and didn't make it to Europe until October. Pure was initially a March release, though the PSP had been around longer in North America than in Europe. In retrospect, saying that a Wipeout game is best when it's released in a certain month or season isn't exactly accurate.

---

Now back to the topic at hand: Who's going to Leipzig? :g

Join me in Florida as I stay up all night tonight to see if my ancient roof with the fragile shingles leaks all over the place. [Another tropical storm is mucking about the state for at least a couple of days.]

I got up there yesterday and today and used three tubes of sealant. Also cut some tree limbs away from my electrical lines that come from the pole at the street edge. I can reach them once they get to about a third of the way along the carport at the north edge as they head for the vertical conduit that goes into the roof. Out further toward the street, the lines and the trees are too high for me to reach.

About 9 hours to the Sony press conference as of now.

Best-Case Scenario: Announcement that the game will have a worldwide release date in September, priced in the US at $30-50, and a Wipeout HD PS3 bundle for release in North America.
General Whining Scenario: Nothing on Wipeout HD.
I'm Throwing A Huge Brick Through SCE's Collective Windows Scenario: Announcement that the game will only be accessible to players in Europe and Australia.

I'm prepared either way.

Alright folks, just got back to the hotel from the first day of GC. Now get yourself a glass of water, sit down comfortably and read the news: wipEout HD is at GC, and it’s fully playable. I spent about an hour with a tired Tony Buckley (poor lad had to spend the night on the airport in Frankfurt), and he showed me pretty much everything there is to see and know (I will upload the whole video interview soon-ish). I don’t have much time now, so I’ll just hit you with the hard facts.

Alternative HUDs are in, we get a 2097 and a w3o HUD to unlock in campaign. These are pretty much exactly the HUDs from the respective games, so it’s pure nostalgia here.

The reverse tracks we heard about before are indeed reverse versions of the 8 already confirmed tracks. Chenghou with magstrips looks weird at first, but it definitely works.

All ships from Pulse are back, each with 3 fantastic skins and 1 special platinum skin. To see Icaras in HD was pure wipEout porn, Icaras fans are gonna collapse when they see this.

There is NO option to disable BRs, however Tony assured me that they are guaranteed to work every time now, and also they seem to bite a bigger chunk of out of your ship’s energy, so who knows, maybe they’re not as bad as in Pulse.

Be it due to epilepsy tests or whatever, Zone Mode has been slightly nerfed. Fear not, speed and gameplay are intact, the only thing that’s forever gone are the EQ graphics on all the billboards (they’re still on the track itself though). So, meh, but it doesn’t really matter in the end I guess.

Back to the good news: Split screen works perfectly, you can choose which way you want to split, and it runs at a steady 30fps. Yes, ‘only’ 30, but dead solid. The rest of the game is in full 60fps 1080p glory, of course, and the screen tearing from the preview version has been completely ironed out. This really IS the smoothest game I have ever seen.

Oh yeah, almost forgot: the game will basically have the full functionality of the wipeout-game website’s record tables included and working live, so you always have the world record time displayed to hunt down!

Uhm, what else…
Photo mode has some nice added filters and options, there will be NO replays unfortunately, Sol 2 is a charm to look at in HD, and Tony Buckley is all ways of awesome ;) He couldn’t say anything about the price point of HD, and he only just hinted at a September release (but I guess that’s pretty much on the spot – wipEout IS a September game after all ;)). He also hinted at the possibility of HD being released on BluRay at a later date, IF there is enough demand. Also, there is no additional downloadable content planned right now, since all of the originally planned DLC is now in the game right from the get-go. They will, however be supporting the game (whatever that means), and IF there’s enough demand, there might be DLC later on.

Okay guys, now I gotta take a shower and get some sleep, gotta be at the top of my game tomorrow – Tony invited me to an 8 player linked game, and I gotta perform ;)
Read you later everybody!

Fan-****ing-tastic news all around-- thanks much for the updates :)

Edit-- curious news about the non-commitment to future DLC, and the statement that all stuff originally intended as DLC is now put into the game. I guess that the business model in Wipeout Pulse was not much liked?

As excited as I am about Wipeout HD, it would seem that the economics of creating HD content are rearing their heads-- much fewer tracks here than in the PSP titles. Is it safe to say that generation of content (tracks) is much more expensive for a full 1080p HD experience?

Voice chat would be really nice :)

Probably more like "we have the extra time now to put it in, so why not?"

I guess so. But the whole idea of DLC with Pulse was to create a source of revenue associated with the game long after the purchase of the initial UMD disc. By including the originally intended DLC, Sony is moving away from this financial model-- figuring that it is probably best to include more original content and charge a bit more for the game up front.

Who knows, but having a look at the content for other games, I wouldn't worry so much, I'm sure it will be affordable. Is there any news about the release date?

I'm not so much worried about it being affordable-- current generation games run $60+ USD and I'm sure Wipeout HD will be south of that, and well worth it IMHO.

It's just striking how much less content there is in Wipeout HD than in the recent PSP games, and I wonder if this reflects intrinsic development costs for real HD games :)

What I'd like to see next:

- SL uploading an updated version of Wipeout-Game.com
- A firm release date (duh)
- This game on my hard drive pronto.

Martin you confirmed most of our suspicion about the four extra ships, including my own (I was the first to bring it to attention that it's their worst kept secret) - I don't even like Icaras as much and it's making me want to play Wipeout Pure non-stop! The live time tables are an awesome addition, same for the extra HUDs (what about weapon icons, since there's definitely some changes between the weapons in WOXL, WO3 and HD?) and SPLIT SCREEN! I don't care if it runs 30 FPS, it's a solid framerate AND it's SPLIT FREAKIN' SCREEN WIPEOUT!

Combined with the W3O HUD, and most of us will inadvertently be scraping walls non-stop hoping for an extra burst of speed. :g

And voice chat would just be the icing on the cake - unless certain racers have been slurring their words from high levels of alcohol to go along with thick accents :g And I'd still laugh my ass off.

Somebody mentioned seeing custom liveries in the trailer - I don't have official info on this, but it's pretty safe to assume that wipEout HD will NOT have a livery editor. Once you see the full fidelity of those ships up close, you will understand that it's just WAY too detailed to be customiseable.

Understandable. I think Jon mentioned quite a while ago that custom liveries for HD would be far too complex give the increase in detail.

I think I mentioned it too. It's just common sense really, you can't expect to be able to do a high resolution texture and bump mapping with an online skin editor like Wipeout Pulse's. It requires powerful editing software.
