the best thing to do would be to check out the team xlink forums - 99% of your problems or questions have probably been fixed or answered at some point.
It takes a little bit of work to get Kai to work on Linux (or so i heard) so good luck to you. :)
You can find the Linux XLink forum here:
http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/forum/viewforum.php?f=10&sid=27fc832dcd864b2e0c8f1ced85f6568b
All of the programs and stuff you need can be found on this page:
http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/?go=download
Clicky on the dropbox - the program/s you need are under --Linux UI--
The XLink moderators are usually very helpful as well - Mortj helped me out quite a bit when i was having trouble forwarding ports (turned out my firewall was secretly preventing me from performing certain actions on the modems firmware) so dont be afraid to ask for help. :)

Stin - im not sure if you are still in need of help, but a good site is:
http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm
There you will find a pretty comprehensive list of router models - find yours, and follow the instructions carefully. A good tip is to turn off all your anti-virus software and firewalls, as they can inhibit your ability to send information to your router.
I hope you have some more luck with it - it took me the good part of a year to finally figure out my problem! Silly me - i was trying to be too technical.

Stevie did this, few weeks ago unsuccessfully and using the portforward.com site you mentioned ( i also tried last year on Mad Ice's routeur without any concrete results) got better success with 2 french linksys routeurs but which is interesting is what you said here : ' turned out my firewall was secretly preventing me from performing certain actions on the modems firmware'
That could be that about Stevie's issue.
