I will have my Japan PSP in the nest few days, and so would like to know what downloads people suggest for it.
Also what updates are there, and what do they do?

you will need to download the version 1.5 update. look over to http://psp.ign.com and look in news, they have a topic on the update there including instructions on how to install it.

Yes, right, I meant that.
Thanks for the information :)

Does anybody know how good the no-name things for the PSP are? Like the battery packs? Are they as good as the Sony ones?

Arrived today!!

No dead pixels as far as i can tell.

Left shoulder button is a little sticky, but not a big problem.

I can not convert WMA files for some reason

Speaking of battery packs Sausehuhn, this is probably already known but it was confirmed that sony are working on a battery for the PSP with double the lifespan

but to be honest, the 4-6 hours it's lasting with purE are enough anyway, at least I don't have enough time to play more than that in a day...

What program converts WMV for the PSP?
How do you sort the tracks by track number in the PSP?

For converting the *.wma files (windows media audio) use a cd-burning tool ( i use roxio ezcd 6 platinum) and make a closed audio disc from the .wma files you want to copy.
Next, purchase the add-on for windows media player that lets you rip tracks as .mp3
Finally, put the finished audio cd into your computer and get media player to rip all the tracks as .mp3's for you.
A bit long winded, but it works.

I cant get that PSPVideo9 thing to work properly yet. Not that fussed about it really

me neither, the audio is always off by a couple of seconds...

Do you need a wireless router, or can you connect using a USB WiFi adaptor and a ADSL modem plugged into the PC?

def

usb adaptor will do. it might be a little rough to configure initially though, thats where the manual comes in ^_^

If I've got a Card Reader for the mem Cards, could I put the downloads etc. directly to the card, without using any USB-cables etc.?
It should work, shouldn't it?

yea that will work with the exception that the downloads are posted on a page that can be accessed from a pc. infact it is one of sony suggested methods for data transfer, you wont drain your batteries while saving stuff.

Just got mine, been using PSP video 6 (Ver 1.23 ) fine without audio delays. Ive only been converting anime episodes tho and not full feature films. Had no problems connecting to my D-link router wireless ( dsl ) with the PSP on automatic network settings. I heard from another psp owner he bought himself some screen-protection layer from Gametech, might be worth looking up in case you really dont want to risk any scratches on the screen.

I thought it was already coated in stuff that can't be scratched by steel wool

Really? Ive heard its real easy to get scratches on and my screen does look a bit fragile, I treat it like a newborn hehe.

Has anyone seen any 128MB sticks yet? So far the only ones I've seen are the 32, 256, 512 and 1GB. Reason I ask is 'cos the 32 is too small and the 256 is a tad on the expensive side, so I'm looking for something in between.

As for the power issue, have you seen the power brick being sold on VG+? It looks like a mobile charge station of some sort. Charge it at home and plug the PSP in to recharge it when it runs low. Slightly unwieldy, but it looks a better bet pricewise than buying an extra battery pack. Seems more convenient as well seeing as you don't need to switch off the PSP to plug it into the brick.

Nice to know they're available, I didn't want to splash over the odds for a larger card than I needed to start with.

Just letting you know you can download tools and gamesaves for your PSP at http://pspsaves.info/download.php
Since this thread is about stuff you might need when youre starting out with a PSP, I thought it would be relevant.

I have a 512mb card, and it is holding three gamesaves, firmware update and 7 music cd's. Still has 100mb free to download all the 'pure goodies!
It is only about £45 and to be honest it is money well spent because I'm not ever going to need to buy another one due to lack of free space. 1Gb is a bit overkill for a PSP, but if you can afford it then go for it.

I can just about remember those days. Even I was stunned at the size of a 1MB hard drive at one point!

Another question though. Say I import from Play-Asia, what sort of import duty am I looking at after VAT? This is only going to be for the standard pack PSP, I'll be getting the games from VG+.

Okay, I get the message.....

I will, probably, at some point upgrade to a 1GB stick.
but at the present moment I dont see the point because the 512mb is doing everything I want from it with a little room to spare.

-import duty-
I was lucky, I never had to pay any.
But I am guestimating that if you did get stung for import tax, you would have to cough up 17.5% of the total value of the item, or an extra £26.25 on top of the £150 for the standard pack. Would be nice if someone could confirm or deny this.

..and on a slightly related note, I remember when I unpacked my first real PC, with its awesome and fantastic 1.06GB hard disc!
Those were good memories...

Sometimes it is marked a "gift" apparantly. A way for anyone to get around customs.

Just a quick question from anyone who ordered their psp off lik-sang.com:
What buttons are select and back?

Over here x = select and triangle is back. But i have heard that it is different on jap machines. I know it is a silly question but i am a bit fussy about that kind of thing sometimes. Especially if it will cost a packet anyway.

I can confirm that you may have to, in certain case, pay import tax.
I had to pay a total of £32.35 on my psp value pack with wipeout pure.
It was a major bummer, but worth every penny :)

on jap PSPs o=select and x=back, but that only affacts the PSPs OS and not the games.

Hellfire_WZ

Space Cowboy: Was that from Lik-Sang or Play Asia? I'm still trying to gauge whether it's worth going on Ebay or not to minimise import tax.

It was from Play-Asia mate :)
