Is it possible to get dinput or xinput controllers working with the PC version?

If I remember correctly, this only supported old-school gameport joysticks, right? Are there any emulators or wrappers for dinput/xinput that can spoof gameport controllers for old software?

I was thinking about downloading this game again, but it's probably not worth it if I can't find a way to use analog controls.
