View Full Version : Why is there no replay function?

How can such a basic function, on such a type of game, not exist?

How many times have you nailed an absolute perfect lap and would love to watch it again?

Doesn’t even need to have "cinematic" cameras like Gran Turismo, just the normal playing view.

This has always baffled me.

Same.

Games like Halo and Call of Duty have automatically recorded the last 100 games you play for years now. And you can view them back from any players point of view.

You can use the PS4 share function, just press share and there is an option to save the last 15 minutes of you playing the game which can then be viewed in the capture library. Likewise the share function lets you trim the video to set start and end points if you only want to record a specific session (such as a awesome race).

Share also lets you upload to youtube and other social media platforms, its how I'm creating youtube content now cuz I don't have any capture cards :D

Whoa... what what what? I'll have to start doing this!

That's slightly different.

I mean an actual saved replay of the race. So you could go into it and view the race from someone else's perspective.

Would also help making some banging videos 8)

I know Snake, it’s just not as simple as it could/should be... in frigging 2017.

Blackwiggle mentioned it in another thread, but I think he's right, i swear HD did have a spectator mode at first but it was horribly broken. The first week or so of release.

i could be chatting utter shite though :beer

Yep, the PS3 did have a spectator option (for MP) - it was extremely laggy and the stats showed that about 0.1% of people actually used it.

As this is now supported via the PS4 software (you can ask to observe someones gameplay) - it was a feature we pulled very early on in development.

The entire networking code of the game was rewritten from scratch for Omega, so quite a lot of these sorts of features were removed because they are now supported on the system itself.

Back to the original topic:

Replays: Yes, I've wondered that too, but the code doesn't exist, and whilst it's not hugely complicated to put it in. It is time consuming and we felt there were better things to concentrate on. Sadly most of games development is about choosing between two really great ideas and deciding which one happens and which one doesn't. Whatever we "picked" over a new replay feature was probably the right option at the time. :)

I don't wanna hijack this thread, but this PS4 video capturing.... I don't know. Have you guys tried it?
The video looks gruesome. Lots of artifacts, pixelations etc. especially on higher speeds. Is there some setting that I've missed? Or is the PS4 just not capable of doing better?
I am thinking of getting a capture card after all.
