onboard vs offboard view?

Since everyone here is a serious pilot, I would like to ask about preferences for the views chosen, either offboard (ship visible), or onboard ("cockpit" view).

Myself, I always thought that the greater realism of the onboard view made it more of a racing purist's choice. It is certainly harder than onboard, but more of a rush. When WO3 introduced the "true" cockpit view, I was delirious with joy, and terrified at the same time. Bloody hard.

What are others' thoughts? Is there any etiquette/snobbery attached to this point?
