the whole point of this comp is to find the best pilot regardless of what speed he or she likes to race.

We all know now what kind of tactics some phantom pilots are resorting to.

Hm... while I do agree that flash and venom isnt just showboating and that it requires absolute precision and tremendous skill to master TTs and SLs in both there is also the point that woopzilla made that the decider is a bit of a luck based decider, I'd go for anulpha reverse as it is played more by people who play a lot (from what I've seen) than the fwd version and also it doesnt have the "death-in-one-shot"-overpass.

Also can we please drop the whole Venom vs Phatntom debate? We never get anywhere and people get mad, and this is absolutely not the place for it.

As for DP's comment I dont begrudge him the right to gripe after a loss like that, hell most of us know what it's like to lose in the cup, but to lose in the quarter finals? Cut the man some slack!

Also DP you were my favourite I'm so sorry to see you go I would so have liked to see you and speedkang face off in the final (a countryman and a friend vs a very good friend from another country) but alas it was not to be.

I hope I'll see you on the tracks soon again!

And no one has the right to paint venom / flash / rapier as lesser speeds if they cant win on them to prove there mettle in the cup. End of.

Ion My point is that he lost in the quarterfinals, something neither you nor I could say we've done, i.e. he's disappointed and he has every right to be, as such I would allow him a moments respite. Secondly I could edit my post to say sr and mpr too if you'd like, but the point is: That this is not the place for that discussion, as there are many threads that have digressed into this subject, whereas this thread is the cup thread wherein we discuss the cup and stay on point. I'm tired enough as it is of this discussion(not wanting to take sides) that I dont need to see it plastered all over the cup thread.

It's absolutely nothing personal on my part I'd just like to see this thread be about the cup and nothing else, gripes be damned.

False !! I'm an almost exclusive phantom player and i have some top 10 on all classes. I didn't spent 1% of the time i spent on phantom TT/SL on the lower speed classes. Obviously doing all those nose down/up/sideshift BRs on slow classes is something which requires skills, but IMO any top 10 phantom pilot can reach a top ten in slower classes IF HE TAKES TIME FOR THAT GOAL ! Some already did (Yeldar as a known example). Items pick up is a major part on winning at phantom speed. It's multiplied on slower speed classes. The weapon hit's slowdown below phantom is huge and you lose easily several seconds and it's far more difficult to catch the first pilots than in phantom, because everyone can avoid walls, have decent lines and hit all the speedpads on slow classes. I was recently invited on rapier races by a french mate, we did some single races and 2 tournaments. On the first tournament i was hit by rockets/missiles or mines/bombs at almost each races and i lose with easily 3/4 seconds left. On the second tourny i was lucky with weapons and won all races with 5/6 seconds = 100% luck !! If rapier/flash/venom races require as much skills as phantom, why didn't any of the WIPEOUT HD CUP slow classes pilots CHOSEN NO WEAPON RACES ?
That said The cup's rules allow slower classes and it's a good thing because it attracted more people on the event ! Will the winner of the cup be the best wipeout HD online pilot ? Probably because when you look at online races phantom are the lesser ones ! Will he be the most skilled ? It's another story !

I play venom and to me that is the haaaardest speed class. Try getting a BR on a venom track that isnt obvious. It takes real skill man. The BRs arent obvious on venom like they are on phantom.

Don't know for the other SL/TT players, but personaly, i don't hate weapons ! I just maintain that using missiles, rockets, mines, bombs or quakes requires less skills than piloting doing BRs and difficult tricks. Also WR on multiplayer or single races requires lot of boosts, that all (and without SL/TT specialists like Flashbackjack or Pihrapac to find tricks, no WR on various modes) !

Ok, allow me to try and clear a few things up here.

You can't change the deciding race format, that would be totally against the spirit of the Cup.
Rapier/Anulpha was chosen precisely because it sits in between the two most hotly contested speed classes, and favours neither.

And as for DP saying it should of been a Phantom only cup and the insulting inference that Flash doesn't require a lot of skill [logic would support that obviously more skill is required by you at this speed class otherwise you would of won] seems like sour grapes to me I'm sorry to say, I'm really disappointed in your post to be honest, seems bazzman won fair and square......You lost on a decider that is in your opinion a supposedly inferior speed class, and that requires less skill than you infer is required of the eventual Wipeout HD CUP Grand Champion, yet you lost to somebody who specializes at a slower speed class.

I've never had a cross word to say to you previously, but your post comes across to me like Phantom elitism at it's most vulgar, and is totally out of kilter with the whole reason for the HD cups format.

I'm sorry that you feel the need to attack me in this way, but I believe that I am entitled to an opinion. I clearly stated in my post that my feelings were an opinion, therefore not necessarily fact. Whilst I do prefer Phantom class, I believe that I don't go around constantly claiming "I am teh best and phantom rockz, everyone else suckzzzz!" I'm not like that at all and I would have thought that you would have known that by now. Still, if that's how you feel about me, then I can't change your mind.

no offense but it's a bit more difficult to reach a good rank in phantom than flash or venom ....
be first is always difficult in any class and require a bit of skill

But I have to say I agree with ion_harvest and blackwiggle entirely, I don't like this phantom elitism one bit. If the next iteration of Wipeout was one, really f*cking fast speed, single races only, it would be a sh*t game in my opinion, and I'd have no interest in it.

Thank you for understanding Medusa. It's not as if I came in out of the blue, made some long rant and then just left. I clearly stated that I was disappointed and apologised for my whiny post. When you love HD as much as I do, you tend to take it a bit too seriously, thus you feel very disappointed when things like this happen.

DP, sorry you lost mate and I hear what you're saying but I think you really expressed all of your initial disappointment in that one post, which has now kicked off into the old speed debate, which I'm sooo sick of hearing and which I'm sure you never intended. This cup was never going to be fair, like Leungbok said, having weapons involved makes the whole thing a random luck event, except those of course who were brave enough to race unarmed. It's certainly not the final board I was expecting due to such random events.

But speed class should not be an issue, and I know Bazzman is a good pilot, he's been on my friends list lforever as we used to race rapier a lot back in the beginning, and he's improved so much in the past year that he deserves kudos for this win. Congrats Bazzman, you've done really well here

Now lets all shut up about this nonsense and give all our support to the people who have come so far

Now about what you guys discussed. We are all wipeout fans, & THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT. I'm in a middle of a not interesting at all discussion atm, wth friends of the wife at home for a couple of days, & I'm suffering a lot to NEVER really share my passion with my surroundings. So you can imagine how this place is important to me, how you all guys are important to me. We're sharing the same passion for wipeout, no matter how we like to play it. So yeah I'm a purist myself, phantom speed lap wacko, Leungbok you know I'm with you at 200%, pirhapac made his point with moa fwd in all speed classes, but I'm def proud of our fantastic four. I mean; we have everything here; ZB, Eliminator, venom, flash, rapier & phantom masters. What else?

Damn, some people get up early in the morning on a weekend to rehash old arguments. Someone mentioned ego - that's basically what it is when people both start and perpetuate arguments like this. Ironically, I think Dark_Phantom was the only one with a reason to have a bruised ego, and I think he adequately acknowledged (and apologised for) his words in his initial post.

Anyway, despite some getting bent out of shape, I think this is over with relatively little aggro, so after kanar's words, let's move on, celebrate the diversity and look forward to the remaining games and future competitions. Back on topic people.

But like said Kanar and DP, it's my opinion, that's all, after if people playing low classes wants to be as considered as phantom fastest pilots by some elitists like me, it's naive, as said Jav. But i can appreciate good pilots on all classes (and all modes). Wipeout players should only care about having fun with the game, not looking at who's in front and who's behind on leaderboards.
And Saturn, yes it's a lot a matter of ego, pilots here must accept their weakenesses, not trying to find excuses when they lose or because their WR are less acclaimed as others. So DP, you lose against a pilot better than you at the moment of your match, because he follows the rules, and it was a good tactic to do it. The winner of the WIPEOUT HD CUP will totally deserve his win and will be able to be proud of his achievement !

(just remember what i said to Oryx on his interview at the begining of the cup "Leungbok: It can also be another challenger there’s a lot of fast pilots in the cup like Wotan or Luna, in my opinion the most motivated and the best tactician will win !")
