hmm... I've got a reasonably high rep [though not nearly so stunningly luminary as Arnaud's ], but despite both that and that I'm a mod, I seem to only affect a rating by 1 point. Emphasis on the word, "seem", since I could be misreading something.

That's because you'd go MAD with power otherwise!

Quite possibly. After all, I am merely a "jewel in the rough", a very crude fellow, indeed.

Of, course, instead of giving out 'demerits', I could just ban somebody.

That depends on how they're banned. Bans can be simple or very thorough.

It seems to me that when a member is banned, his reputation becomes green !?

So what the heck does all this mean? Are you talking about the green squares? I assume the more you have the more your opinion matter so to speak? Not that not having them means your opinion doesn't matter but I assume that's the gist?

So how does one gain or lose them? Honestly I don't fully investigate a forum much. They're probably in the FAQ's but alas I didn't read them. I suppose I lose a gold star for that

It depends: if what you write helps, entertains, or is just a really good thing in general, it might get good rep for it. If you offend, abuse or act like a twonk, you will get the opposite reaction.

How to give or take away rep: click this: at the top right of a post.

    I approve = +1
    I disapprove = -1

(Except for Arnaud where it's like +20 or something it seems xD)

You can write a comment, but it won't be signed, so if you wish the other to know it was you giving the rep, sign it with your name in parenthesis for example.

But really, for me too it's kind of useless, for one I can give rep to almost nobody else now (Spread some around first, but to who!?!) because I've given so much to everyone else, and it doesn't really matter overall because good posts can be made even with reputation as bad as the opposite of Arnaud's.

Wonderful entertainment. I am really intrigued to see what colour I have beside this post now! Will it be red and so lead me to storm out reality tv show styley? or will it be green and leave me feeling warm and fuzzy inside? Or will it be (as I suspect) BLUE! I think this means no one has bothered with my comments either way! What was that quote again? The only thing worse than being talked about behind your back.........

Not sure who to thank but ta for the warm glow of positive rep!

Actually i think it's +15 or -15 when i add a rep to someone, the figures depends on how you are ranked with rep : for those who got 2 green bar that could be +/- 5 pts , those with 3 green may be +/-8 and so on. ( it's just an estimation)
