    Default Prototype WO1 pictures?

I'm not sure how much the footage from Hackers counts, but at the same time I have no idea what stages Wipeout went through in development.

I was looking for my Okami strategy guide, I either misplaced it or put it with my multiple hundreds of gaming magazines from the last nearly 20 years. As I go through all these old magazines, I've gotten stuck looking at articles from different eras in games. Going through the mid 90s and seeing early PSX/Saturn/N64 titles, I stumbled across an early Wipeout shot. It got me wondering what early builds of the game looked like, so if anyone else happens to have early shots they could share, I'd be appreciative

Thanks for the old magazine pic. Very interesting to see.

I have a few at home, will try remember to upload tonight..
I remember reading on here at one stage that wipeout was pencilled to be an on-rails shooter (think a scifi panzer dragoon) before it became a racer, I haven't seen much of the game from that period, but I think that's what it still was at the point of it's appearance in hackers

I don't remember any rails in Hackers; does anybody recall some sort of on-rails behaviour of the ships in the movie? It's been a long time since I saw it.

I don't mean like a train, as in literally on rails...
just that the ship follows a set route and you aim it's weaponry, rather than having full control over the ship itself

    anyway, I found my screenshots...
looks like there were 4 or 5 early shots

    this contains 2 of them
    here's another
and this rounds out the set
but there's also some low res stuff in this magazine preview of the original wipeout that's worth looking at, as is this wipeout64 review, which features one of the above shots

this was also shown in this article about the then-upcoming wipeout3

Hence my qualification of ''some sort of on-rails behaviour''.

Thanks for digging out the screenshots.

I've watched hackers a lot (too often ) and most of it looks pre-rendered anyway.
if memory serves (can confirm when I get home) the bits that look like game, rather than cutscene, have Dade moving a crosshair around on screen.

As though the ship were following a set 'groove' and could only move the weapon? [reminds me a bit of the original 'Outrun' racing game] Wish I had Hackers now so I could watch the Wipeout scene again. I have the impression in memory that it looked a bit like Tubeslider.

It's an easy request to fill for someone not on dial-up. YouTube is total crap for me. I've never gotten anything properly viewable from them.

Even on sites that do give one a proper download file, I usually don't bother cos it takes all of my bandwidth for hours to get a video.

But that is not yoUr problem, just my fault.

    Cool

I just love how they refer to the wipeout vehicles as "sleds". Lovely term, just sends you right into the future, doesn't it?

Thanks for the pics Lion, good stuff.

The editor of this article didn't really know what he was talking about, I feel. This is the game that solidified my addiction to wipeout....and racing games for that matter.

Is there anyone still at SL/Psygnosis/Sony who might still have the original rendered source video for the Hackers "arcade" scene? I'd love to see the sequence in its entirety, and at possibly better resolution.

Yes, I'm asking a lot, hoping for old pre-wipeout source files, but, perhaps it's doable?

The first uphill run at Terramax is so recognizable yet with that HUD and that environment it's so alien. My word.
