SanDisk Memory Stick Pro Duo compatability under Windows

I thought I'd post this here as help, even though it might not be the best place for it.

As detailed in another thread, I bought a 512MB SanDisk Memory Stick Pro Duo (MSPD) to replace the 32MB Memory Stick Duo (MSD) that came with my PSP.



I've tried to use it: under Win2K with an internal Sony VAIO MS reader, WinXP with an external multi-card reader and also an internal MS reader. None of these work. The only method that works is using a PSP data cable to read the card via that method.

So, not all is lost, it's just strange that none of the other methods work. Or am I blissfully ignorant of something else?

Are you sure you are putting it in a DUO slot?

Might sound like a daft question but i have heard a lot of people complaing saying it doesnt work but they were putting it in the old memory stick slot.

Right, well that makes it a little clearer.

I was unaware that there was more than one type of Memory Stick slot. My PC laptop is 5 years old and my card reader is a couple of years old. The 32MB PSP card is a DUO and works, but the 512MB PRO DUO card does not. So do you mean PRO card need specifically compatible slots?

Any links to info on compatible readers etc?

Are these Pro Dous better than the normal Dous? Faster or something? Maybe better for the PSP because it can read the files in a better way?

Apparently better and faster though I have not used it much yet to be able to judge.

They dont need special slots. I havent got a clue why they arent working.

DUO means it's smaller, PRO means it's got faster transfer rates and the ability to hold larger capacity.

That still doesn't explain why it's not working across all my devices.

The thing is that he knows he can do that, it's just that he would prefer an alternate method (or maybe he just wants to know how to make an alternate method work).

i've sort of settled for the reason that the other methods don't work - memory stick is not really backward compatible

It's just that relatively speaking, using the PSP for Memory Stick Duo data transfer simply isn't convenient compared to other methods. And if you need a reason other than convenience... it sucks up electricity when you turn on that PSP and leave it in USB mode. YOU ARE DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE FOR GLOBAL WARMING! </greenpeace>

No, simply practical. I don't want to carry my USB cable with me everywhere.

I don't want to carry my laptop anywhere.

i just want to be able to use my memory stick in anty device that has a slot for it. It is not possible to do that.
