Default Shuhei Yoshida talks about Wipeout future

So I have a big news for you. This week were in UK their biggest game event called EGX. Some guys asked there Shuhei Yoshida (President of Sony's Worldwide Studios, for those who don't know) about Wipeout, if is this searies still alive.

"Never say never. There are many IPs that we kind of stopped iterating with new games. One of the reasons is that we always love to work on new IP. From my standpoint, I try to balance the number of games in a franchise. In the future there might be a chance to come back to a game like WipEout."

So the series has not been retired. For fisrt that is a really good news for me. BUT I guess there is not a big chance that we will see new Wipeout in next 3 years. I am a bit happy and a bit outraged.

What do you think about this?

Yeah i saw it as well, it's all speculation though, but one can hope

It doesn't say a new wipeout though, it says "a game like wipeout", so dunno, with most of the devs having moved on, i doubt it'll ever be the same :/

    This is amazing news.

I know it's minor/speculations, but we gotta hang onto anything we get. And this comes from the higher spheres!

It isn't nothing. Keep believing guys, and one day, we shall thrive again

I think you misinterpreted the quote.

He's saying "un jour on reviendra peut-être Ã* un jeu comme Wipeout", dans le sens "un jour on reviendra peut-être Ã* une ancienne série, par exemple Wipeout".

It'll be nice if they did work on a new Wipeout game for the PS4. It'll give me a reason to buy one alongside Project DIVA X, which is not coming out until 2016 in Japan. (Maybe the year after for the English version.)

    Well, it's hope, anyway.

Between the licensed T-Shirts, and the Rezzogun DLC, it's nice to know that WipEout hasn't been completely forgotten.

Hopefully they outsource WipEout's development to someone like Firesprite. After all, that studio does have a lot of guys from SL.

I hope so, Wipeout is one of those staples and it will sad to see it join Jet Moto as a forgotten franchise.

    Holy moly O_____O
He's been a pretty reliable source of sneaky game news over the past, it also kind of makes sense, as wipeout has always been a launch title kind of thing..

He also speaks of it being a sort of remake possibly being announced at PSX (early December), that'd be really cool!!
Jesus, i'm all hyped up now!! :O

    Thx for the linky Tug!!

That Kotaku link has a picture of one of the devs holding an AG Craft model! Do want!

Thanks for posting this! Also, check out The Pilot's Lounge. There's a WipEout cameo in the new PSVR Playroom game.

Shows Sony hasn't totally forgotten about WipEout.

EDIT: Read that neogaf thread, and holy crap, am I ever drooling!

If something comes of this... If something actually happens at PSX...

I still don't have a PS4 because there's no WipEout. I was hoping from the last 3 or so years that they'd stop ignoring it and somehow reinvigorate the franchise, but nope. And then shinobi comes around and says all that stuff! A new WO game would instantly make me buy a PS4, no questions.

    For context, who’s Shinobi?

Also, this is of interest, found in the Kotaku thread:

That’s all right, it doesn’t have to be PSX, we can wait. We only know but to wait.

I wonder what he means by "new-ish" though. Anything is better than nothing, but if it’s just a re-hash of past assets, it doesn’t reassure me that much.

Hey, if they gave us a PS4 update to WOHD/Fury and 2048 that added VR support, ran at 60+fps (2048 ), and added in stuff 2048 was missing, like racebox, truly customizable controls, etc, I'd buy that.

Sure, sure, of course. If only for the fact that it would bring back the franchise in a capacity or another, make it be alive and lasting.
