Score Points in Eliminator After Race Complete

I am 99% sure the below is true, but wondering if anyone else has seen the same thing.

In an online eliminator match last night I was clearly in 5th place when someone reached the target score and "Race Complete" came up (yes 5th place is humiliating I know...)

In a moment of frustration I fired the rockets that I still had and managed to hit the opponent in front of me, and saw the +3 float over their ship. When the final scores came up, I was in 2nd place. The three ppl below me were all tied one point below me.

So it appears that you can score points after the race is complete. I wonder if it's possible to snatch first place with this method, perhaps with a quake.
