View Full Version : I fear that I am becoming a PC Gamer...

It started out quite innocently. A friend at work introduced me to Return to Castle Wolfenstein. I liked it a lot, and began playing online (did I write "playing"? I meant "getting mercilessly killed and having to respawn every ten seconds"). After a while I began to think, "Well, we have this new computer with a 2.66GHz processor and a GeForce 4 video card. We should probably use it." Then came the downward spiral...

Battlefield 1942. This game is glorious. The ability to pilot planes, drive tanks, snipe across great distances - all very addicting. There's the word. My god, there are Battlefield LAN parties where I work...

I used to stay tucked away in the guest room playing Wipeout. Only occasionally would my wife wander by and say "Three, two, one... GO!" with a bad japanese accent.

Now I get comments like "Hey Mr. Kill-nazis-for-three-hours-straight. Maybe you could lay off the carnage so I can CHECK MY EMAIL. And stop crying for a medic. They all know you'll be dead again in thirty seconds."

My personal favorite would be her imitation of the the peasants in Warcraft III: "Alright", "must work", "right then" etc all done in that Neil from The Young Ones voice.

I used to load up on caffeine and play Fusion or Wip3out. Or load up on gin & tonics and play GTA III. Now I obsess over system requirements, memory and resolution ad nauseum. I covet other people's video cards.

You know what I did last night? I installed new video drivers and remapped the keyboard. What did my wife do? Probably pored over eastern european newspapers looking for mail-order husbands who have no working knowledge of computers.

help me.

hahaha been there, in my case its counter-strike. sounds like youre only in the first phase of truly getting addicted, keep out from things like mIRC and other clients that lets you get in touch with the community outside of the game ;) and keep away from such things as "clans" :D

Best post ever!

Where's the prize avatars when you need them?

Great wife you have there Mogaar! Wished some lady would taunt me like that ;)

Any ways, I absolutely loved Wolfenstein but hate multiplayer in any game. All a bunk of punks. That program punk buster is falsely named. The punks are still there.

As for my fave PC game of the moment, Jedi Knight II. Uses the same Quake III engine as does Wolfenstien. Also, I'm a Star Wars fan and usually the Dark Forces games have been great.

Wolfenstein will be coming out with a free multiplayer game that will be somewhat like Battlefield.

Which is something I should try, since I consider myself an PC gamer.

Not until consoles have a large mod community will I be owning one. Besides the games always look better on a PC in my opinion.

I gave Counter-Strike a shot. I don't remember much about it, except that I died a lot in those sixteen hours.

...Had a friend who tried heroin one time. He said it was so good, he'd never do it again.

When it comes to gaming, I stay offline.

Yeah, she's pretty cool. I guess her thinking is that I could be engaging in lame guy antics (strip clubs, drinking myself into a coma with "the guys" etc), so me playing games in the next room isn't that big a deal. Playing Battlefield 1942 or Wipeout is better than six gigs of hidden donkey porn on our hard drive... Anyway, we have so much else in common (such as our Rainman-like knowledge of musical trivia) that gaming won't become divisive.

Yeah, multiplayer PC games - fairly frightening stuff. I haven't had much trouble with Wolfenstein (presumably because it's an older game), but Battlefield... I try to ignore the socially inept, but they are LEGION. I don't know if anyone's seen this but it's it's pretty accurate: http://www.gamespy.com/fargo/september02/wakeisland/.

Yeah, I'll check out Jedi Knight. It seems pretty cool from the screenshots I've seen. And I'm really stoked about the free Wolfenstein game. Apparently you don't even need RTCW to play it, which will probably mean a massive influx of HAX0R idiocy. Ah well...

BTW, is it just me, or do the motorbikes in XGRA look a little too steroid-ridden? They look like something frat boys traveling to Tijuana for cases of Rohypnol would ride...

An issue of Maxim a few months ago mentioned it appealing it to speed freaks and Tron fans.
