Challenger #001

Location: Talon's Junction, Pembrey, Wales
Date: 2212/02/23

Talon's Junction never seemed to shut up, Krystian Atkinson decided as he waited for the crowds to lower the noise level. He glanced across at the bustle of men and women in all colours of the rainbow from the green and white of the distant Mirage corner where people chatted and gossiped over Bedouin tea to the crimson red military uniforms of the Piranha officials as they sat firmly, waiting for him to start. The Dane tugged his collar a little and gave a long exhale. This would be his main job, his final proof that he had the nous to rise to the upper levels of the AG-Commission without the need for bribery or backstabbing. He had got here himself despite whatever Overtel had told him all those years ago.

He glanced up to the surly men in black suits each with the image of a lit torch on their breast pockets and shivered a little. He wasn't alone, he remembered, in his distaste for those who had tried to revive Tigron. It had been a black name and better forgotten than remembered. But it seemed the Bulgarian businessman who'd bought the rights to the name and the factory, not to mention the ships and weapons licences from Triakis had other ideas. He cleared his throat and gave a slap to the plexiglas pedestal he stood at. A few more of the crowd turned to look at him, and hushed their neighbours. When he had quietened the crowd, and the only noise was the incessant hum of the billboards behind him, welcoming those to Talon's Junction.

"Welcome, Ladies and Gentlemen, to Talon's Junction, where we will host the first event of the newly formed JX350 racing league!" he began with a smile on his face to a chorus of applause or cheering from different sections of the crowd. He drew confidence from it, and continued. "As you all know, nothing is more important to the people of the AntiGravity Race Commission than the continual, successful growth of our enterprise, the way that Pierre Belmondo declared it so long ago. And there is no better way to continue the spirit of AntiGravity racing than to continually train new and skilled pilots in the use of these honourable and beautiful machines."

"Hear hear!" called a voice from the navy-clad part of the crowd, and faces turned to see the suited middle-aged woman who'd called out. None decided to shout down Jessie Fairbank, head of Auricom Originals. To do so was to easily raise the wrath of a lot of the United States-based team and even more of those who were watching the opening ceremony. A few faces turned to the opposite side of the crowd but to Krystian's eternal relief, none of the Qirex team had decided to interject and merely sat waiting the next development.

"For seven years now, we have run the JX250 league using the older ships of these leagues and using them to welcome new and skilled pilots to the ranks of the FX leagues. Could we have some of our graduates to stand please?" he asked, to a murmur from the crowd. But slowly but surely, Gabrielle Zuzovnitch, Tara Shannon, Morgan Victius, Park-So-Gun and finally Ishak Bin Yusof rose from their chairs to tumultuous applause from their respective teams. Harimau was very nearly about to throw Yusof into the air before Krystian bade for quiet, knowing that more FX officials were watching by remote camera and evaluating his performance.

"And the time has come to bring new pilots to the fold. We have finished our evaluation of a proper season and we have decided to run four events alongside the FX500 races at the same tracks, three separate and one entirely virtual event," he continued to a sudden hush from the crowd. They were interested in what he had to say now. Krystal tapped a button on his personal hololithic projector and the event category burst onto the screen.

There was some muttering from the crowd, but it was mostly filled with sagely nods and murmurs of assent. Taking a breath of relief, Krystal sighed and stepped forward, turning around a large data-slate complete with electro-quill and laid them on the table before the podium.

"This concludes the first part of my speech, ladies and gentleman. I would kindly request that any pilot wishing to take part step forward and sign here (http://www.wipeoutzone.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7911) for your entry into this league..."
