View Full Version : Got rid of my PS2, and now I have a couple questions

8th February 2003, 07:12 AM
Over the last couple months, I've rented several games for my PS2, and they've all been really good. But as I was playing Rygar last week, I realized something: Despite the quality of the games, I just wasn't having any fun. So, after long deliberation, I decided to chuck it all and get a GameCube. I don't really play a lot of games anymore, and I'm hoping a few balsts of Nintendo magic a year will rekindle that youthful joy I once had in gaming. So far all I have is Metroid Prime, and I think I made the right decision.

Of course I kept all the classic Wipeouts, but I don't have anything to play them on anymore. In a few weeks, I'll spend a little cash an pick up a PS1, and then I'll be all set.

Here's where my questions come in:

1. For those of you that have bothered with the miniature new model of the PS1, how has it held up for you? Does it have any of the reliability issues of the older models?

2. Back when the SNES was around, I really enjoyed F-Zero. But the N64 version didn't really look all that impressive. I was wondering about how well it made the transition from flat tracks to 3D, and how it played? Do you think the GC version is worth looking into?

3. This is a big one. Since I have to go through the trouble of getting another system, I'm considering going the extra yard and getting something that will allow me to play WO:SE. Of course since I'm in America, this will be a pain, but I think it'll be worth it. For those of you that have gone through the trouble, What do I need to do to get it to run?

I guess that's it. Sorry I'm so long-winded today. :) Any advice is appreciated.

I bought my PS One last July, and it's worked like a charm. The only time it's ever frozen up was while playing WO 2097. I think it may have been due to over heating (it had been on for a couple of days, as I recall :-?)

The only downside with the PS One is that it lacks the link port, so you can't hook it up to another PS. The small size is a bonus if you're gonna lug it around (and then there's that funky little LCD screen you can attach to it)

Yes, is too bad they didn't put a link port in them. That's the only reason that keeps me from buying one. It would be my second PSX and the only reason for buying it would be WO link. I suppose I'll buy a second hand old model one someday. It shouldn't be very expensive.

AR: Yay, love The 'Cube! You would be a fool to not get Super Monkey Ball. 8 )
I've also got XG3 and it was pretty good.
If you wanna have a console to play WO with, I'd really suggest a PSX and a mod chip, since that's the only way you're gonna get WO:SE running. I'd suggest modchip.ca, or, I guess, modchip.us for you. It worked great for me, but I'm pretty handy with a soldering iron. It's all about the route you wanna take, really.

My PsOne works perfectly, only using it for wipeout and mgs:vr missions tho :)

i'll second the super monkey ball recommendation!

the killer for me about the new f-zero is that there's going to be some sort of link-up between the game-cube version and the arcade version (probably through the memory card), and the arcade version may be in some kind of game-pod type deal. sounds good to me.

Super Monkey Ball is definitely on my list, but I'm going to wait until I can find it a bit cheaper than what I'm seeing it for now. Metroid rocked, and I'm now about an hour into Eternal Darkness, which is looking pretty good. So far, I'm not missing the 'ol PS2. I'm sure as hell not missing the loading times. :)

I'm not worried about link mode for Wipeout, since all my friends know what a freak I am about the game, and even though they like it, they know better. ;) (note to Lance, I'm not bragging... you've seen my times) So, can a new PSOne be modded, or did Sony manage to kill that option? Is there anything else I would need to worry about, considering the NTSC vs. PAL thing? And is it really going to be as hard as it seems for some Yank bastard to track down a copy of SE?

The LCD screen is a wooping $150 for the PS2 version.... Is it worth to get?
PS. I played F-Zero on both systems and loved it as well, i can't wait for it to come out on Gamecube, the music, speed, graphics all lok spectaclar (not dissing Wipeout, i feel the same way about Wipeout).
