Honestly, I'm not all too fond of social networks myself - mostly because lots of people tend to abuse them as spam outlets or "friend collectors" and not much anything else. However, I started a Facebook account in order to stay in contact with people and it actually works that way! :)

Which is why after the Paris convention I figured this might be nice a nice means to stay in touch with at least some of you guys. Long story short: Anyone interested might just leave her or his name in this thread so we can add each other. If nobody cares then, well, I guess it was worth a try. ;)

Oh, and if there already is a thread like this please let me know! I tried the search several times but didn't find any thread dedicated to Facebook.

Here's mine: Benjamin Schmaedig (no surprise there, no *g*)

I've put my MSN address and facebook address (under homepage) in my contact info. If anyone wants to add me then add me as a friend here first and then you can see them both. That should help reduce any spam potential from random folk or internet pixies. Just make sure you let me know who you are before hand as I seem to get a tonne of random adds on MSN.

The only people I know who have it are people I haven't spoke to in three years (I moved), and I'm a lil' shy to shoot them an add. Anyone else got a facebook account with hardly any friends? I doubt it, it's just I don't know many people in NZ who seem to use it, and it's pretty alright. =S

I don't get the fascination with compiling giant friends lists either... somehow I'm "Facebook Friends" with the girl I went out with for six months, twenty years ago and we've barely seen each other in real life since then.

She sent the friends request and I had no objection to accepting, but c'mon... what's the point? :?

SaturnReturn
14th April 2010, 05:18 PM
Ditto, over the last year or so I've actually made a net loss on facebook friends. At one point I deactivated my account, but then realised there was one girl in Australia that I used to work with who I actually couldn't keep in touch with any other way, so I reactivated it. It hasn't helped me keep in touch with people from uni really, because if I want to then I use the phone anyway. I mostly like it for finding out about interests of new people I meet and getting suggestions for new music and films. You can sometimes listen to music on the fan pages that isn't available to stream elsewhere, which is useful.

AG-wolf
14th April 2010, 06:02 PM
I use facebook for keeping in touch with friends I haven't seen in ages, and it's easy to organize events with the people I do frequently spend time with. I occasionally add simple acquaintances or people I casually go to school with, but the list remains low. I don't understand why some people create a spider's-web network of people that they've just added for the hell of it. I also hide every Facebook App update that get posted automatically (Farmville, mafia wars, whatever the **** else), I can't stand that stuff.

TorquedSoul
14th April 2010, 06:58 PM
With the new security features I dont mind having acquaintances on facebook. as time goes on I'm developing more and more internet relationships. Its nice to move those relationships beyond the faceless world of consoles and message boards. These social websites are a good first step in doing that. I dont go around adding everyone I encounter but if I know the person I wont deny a friend request.

Its also important to note that in crappy economic times having social connections is a good thing as well. It makes it easier to find employment and move around. Something I expect I will doing after I get done with graduate school. It would be nice to know if that I end up finding work in Europe that some zoner would help me coordinate the move. :P

All that said ... I still only have about 34 people on my friends list, mostly old friends and family and classmates. I've only just recently considered putting acquaintances from the internet on facebook.

According to a report a couple of days ago in Ars Technica, due to a policy change, Facebook has already made some personal details of all of its members public, even though they used to be private, and Facebook originally promised to its members that those details would never be made public. I've not, and probably never will join Facebook. I'm too privacy conscious.

Plus I'm out in the desert, so no cell phones... On that or talkng with my family on Skype most of the time... I sometimes add people that are friends of people I do know ONLY if theres a good chance I could meet them in person further down the road, like from my hometown or something... that way being stuck out in the desert can't keep me from meeting and talking with new people every now and then... ;)

im glad when facebook decided a choice to open up facebook to the more than just major and real universities and colleges in the usa and maybe the world.

because it wasn't until after 06....
I had been and still back to a technical college for a different degree. going to a not so expensive 2 year college, Midlands Technical College and my friend from high school were using the Facebook. most of the people who could have a membership and more on that network. Were students of the University of South Carolina, Clemson University, SC STate, College of Charleston and more.

almost none of the 2 year college student like myself was. couldn't get into and have a web page inside Facebook.

Myspace was also back then not turning into a kind of **** hole because of hackers, spammers, fake porn pages and the rest.

Facebook use to be the lol Private club to say for the internet. IF u weren't in a four year college or something else. Now its open to the public and its doing better than Myspace.

And as for the movie coming out Social Network...

Why the hell not should you see it!
I probably am right on the day it comes out or a midnight show the day before friday!

SaturnReturn

As in - a section to list the games we like? Because I still can't see one. There's only an icon for those annoying facebook games as far as I can see. If I 'Like' a game then it just shows up under 'Other' on my profile.

BulletWraith

I just added eyetoy kinetic to my games section
not sure why you don't have it, I think its only recent
edit: its just like the movies and books section

Did you update to the new profile style recently? Maybe that's why I don't have it. I'm still using the old(er) profile. I can add games, e.g. Bayonetta, WipEout HD, LBP etc. but they just go under other pages section. As much as I'd like a proper section for this, if it's at the expense of a comprehensible layout then I don't feel it's worth the sacrifice.

Anyone else not got a game section?

EDIT: OK, may have found it under discover more pages. This has a list of games. Might work.

EDIT2: Nope, I 'Liked' Assassin's Creed and it too is just listed under 'Other'. I give up.

I'm not sure we'll have a choice. Previously they've always forced the change eventually. This is at least the fifth different profile layout they've had. Previously it's just been a bit of a pain in the arse to get used to, but this latest layout is just really ugly and unintuitive. So many annoying images everywhere that one's eyes don't know where to look, and fingers only want to click on the 'close tab' button.

SaturnReturn
24th December 2010, 10:27 PM
Ah, yeah, but even just for things that you like the new profiles show large image icons, not just tagged photos. If you can turn that off for everything then that would be cool. There is another point too. A colleage says to me: people will find you, which you haven't seen for ages. Sorry, but I don't want that people find me again. Especially those, I don't want to see again for the rest of my life. People with whom I want to have contact, I have that too. Of the others, I want to know nothing at all.

I certainly think you have a point but I do think it becomes what you make it.
I mean I cant say I use it all that much, and when I'm not insanely active it doesn't bother me much, not in the way of strangers asking to be friends etc. also I do think one should be careful with what pictures get up there... and in that sense it can be a bit annoying when other people put pictures of you on there.

er... not sure where I was going with this except that I think it is what you want it to be essentially.

I've never been enthusiastic about social networks. It may sound a little conservative, but to organize meetings or to keep in touch with friends, all I need is my phone, mobile or Skype.
I am aware that the social structures and the ways in which we communicate have changed, but I like the intimate contact, and you don´t have that in Facebook. With Skype, I can easily communicate with friends abroad, in video or text chat. No problem at all, and third parties do not participate therein.
But I accept it completely if someone uses Facebook, to make that clear. :)
There are always people who use this service rational, and also people who lose themselves in self-representation. Each path can be correct, it depends on the perspective.
I´ve given it a chance once in a different network. But the disadvantages arising from this form of social existence, have predominated significantly, imo.

I still haven't signed up to facebook... to me it just seems like a way to shove advertisements down your throat and to sell all of your personal details on to other companys who will also spam you with advertisements.
Its like a police database but its public and people sign up to it willingly... imo
Example - I know your name, the area you live, what you look like, what you like/dont like, what you drive, eat, when your on holiday, where you work, what your girlfriend looks like...
I dont know any of these by the way lol, but i guess its not hard for people to find out (pervos, criminals, your boss, next door neighbor, the police and the government)
