I downloaded and installed the new 2.80 System update yesterday,it's one of those under the hood updates that SONY just say fixes some problems with some games, and not a compulsory update.

I've just been reading at another forum what this update did,and that was to decrease the amount of system ram that the XMB uses.

Well the game I think it has fixed is HD.

I was playing offline most of yesterday and then switched to online.

No vista pads the BR's worked and just as fast as offline.

This might be the one ,recommend you give it a go.

It increases the length of text chat from 32 to 64 chars, allows you to return to the game by pressing the PS button when the virtual keyboard is open, and removes the ability to use the Open Remote Play hack which allowed you to use Remote Play through your PC.

I'm glad the text chat characters have increased in chat,it was dumb having all that extra space with small messages.

I'm thought reentering the game and leaving the keyboard open was there before,as that's what I was doing last Avalon meet,I think,or something very close to that.

Yeah I noticed thoose improvements aswell yesterday during the WWC 09 Qualifiers. The censorship in the text chat is still a little bugged (you can't type the word "con") though you're allowed to write "Jesus" now without turning up as "*****" ;)

OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG!!!

My side-shifts, where art thou been? How I've missed thee.

One race on the new firmware - but - either I just got very lucky - or the issue Vince and I noticed on the last firmware update (in March or April I recall) - is now resolved! :D

The jigsaw puzzle has finally got it's last piece in place I think.

We had the problem for some [far to many] that they had to start playing under a different PSNID because they couldn't log on to the SL servers under their original one.
This had both SL and then later SCEE baffled on what was causing it.

I posted a few weeks back an experience I had with online when I couldn't access messaging, the same problem Moriarty79 requested help about at this thread.http://www.wipeoutzone.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6338

The ironic thing was that online worked perfectly while this problem [messaging not working] existed.

A few days after my original post on the problem Paul Tweedle posts that they think that they might of have found a cure, and they did,for the vast majority.

Now this out of the blue update that seems to have rectified all the online problems for HD, and it only basically addresses issues to do with messaging and the amount of resources allotted to it and the XMB.

So it would seem it HAS been the previous updates to the messaging system that has been causing so much frustration with online play.

I don't know if this fixes voice chat yet,I suspect we would all have to be on the same 2.80 to know for sure,I wasn't able to hear what somebody was saying in the lobby last night, but they might not have had the latest update.

There's hope at least.:lol

If what you´ve experienced after 2.80 is true, Blackwiggle, I´ll sent you virtual beers immediately (oh, wine I think you prefer) :hyper
Downloading right now. Will test tonight.

Here is what else 2.80 does according to those that have found out.

QUOTE:
Back on the the 2.80 front, a little but very handy fix they implemented is when you have USB dongles plugged in (for Rock Band or Buzz), they become controllers 6 and 7 instead of 1 and 2. It was always annoying since every time you had your dongles plugged in, you'd have to reassign the controller number(s) for the DualShock itself if you were just playing a normal PS3 game, but no more! The DualShock always comes up as 1. Nice fix.

Oddly this is the first update that hasn't forced me to Update before playing online. SOo I havn't been bothered to update to it yet.

Oddly, some people now report that this "feature" is annoying too. :lol

And Open Remote Play still works, some kind of verification made by the PS3 needs to be bypassed and the author of the program is looking for a simple solution. :)
For those still in 2.70 and wanting to check out ORP, read about it here (http://www.ps3-hacks.com/forums/about7666.html&p=1).

From what I can tell, with BRs - the jury is still out - but for side shifting - it's working much better.

I'm hearing that "perfect lap" voice again - haven't heard that since.... March...

Can't really say anything about sideshifting, because i've never had trouble with it. But non working BR's and vista pads are still there.

I cannot imagine that the firmware update and game issue fixes are related
