The weapon logos and the title logo are mine, the team logos were done by our very own Sausehuhn :)

Actually, I only got about half way through the Pulse guide. I was considering picking up Pulse on PS2 so I might try and get that one sorted too.

Starting to take a bit more shape now. I'm going to include the campaign grids like I did for the Pulse guide. Once the grids are in I'll start having a bash at the track guides.

Hellfire_WZ
25th June 2009, 09:26 PM
v0.4 now complete. All the Campaign grids are now in with each cell listed, and the team descriptions are done too. All that's left now are the track guides and some trophy tips, mainly for Beat Zico. There's some trailing text that needs fixing too

All updates are displayed from the same link in the first post

AFAIK the energy critical warning is at 20%, not 25%. I'll keep reading.
And is it not five mines that are dropped?

Hellfire_WZ
25th June 2009, 10:11 PM
I think you're right about the critical energy warning, will update that. I'm sure there's more than five mines though... or am I just hitting them so often it FEELS like there's more than five? :P

I'll do the track guides in the usual manner, but do you think I should include videos with them as well?

Darkdrium777
25th June 2009, 10:25 PM
It's definitely five, the game description says "a quintet" so unless I suck so much at English (Always possible) it's five :D

For the track guides, what exactly would you think you need as videos?

Hellfire_WZ
25th June 2009, 10:28 PM
Yeah, just checked, it's five :)

Sometimes I think there's only so much you can say with words when describing complex parts of the circuit. I just had a thought of demonstrating them in a video and then linking to them from the guide to supplement the written description.

Darkdrium777
25th June 2009, 10:38 PM
What's track guide like? Is it just showing the racing line? Or does it need more, like real time button presses? All speed classes? If it's in video I mean...

Hellfire_WZ
25th June 2009, 10:48 PM
It would be a guide to the ideal racing line and maybe a demonstration of some of the tricks of the trade, like cheeky barrel rolls or shortcuts. When I write the guides it's usually exclusive to Phantom class as the lines for lower classes tend to be more forgiving.

Maybe a verbal description would be enough, I was toying with the idea as I've not tried it before :)

blackwiggle
25th June 2009, 11:06 PM
I'm guessing the video will be your own.
You wouldn't want to put a link to somebody Else's just in case it got taken down.

I think you should also add a brief description of how changing the % of air brakes and acceleration works,we have had quite a few post here that don't understand how it works.
You might want to throw in a few "Most popular control configurations" and to pro's and con's of each.

Hellfire_WZ
25th June 2009, 11:10 PM
They'd be my own if I did use videos, probably just demonstrating a clean lap. Might do, might not to be honest.

Good point on the controls, that section always did look a bit bare. Will include that in the next update.

Spece2goin
25th June 2009, 11:19 PM
These are the default controls for the game, they can be changed in the main
menu

D-Pad/Left Stick - Steering and Pitch
Triangle - Change View
Circle - Absorb Weapon
Square - Fire Weapon
Cross - Accelerate
L1 - Rear View
L2 - Enable Voice Chat
R1 - Left Airbrake/Sideshift
R2 - Right Airbrake/Sideshift

huh? are you sure?
i use default controls
square : absorb
circle : change view
triangle : maybe that voice thing
R1 : fire.
L1 : rear view
L2 : left ab
R2 : right ab.

what happened to you to write R1/R2 for airbrakes? :)

also : the % sensivity for airbrakes/steering section will help me. ;)

blackwiggle
25th June 2009, 11:25 PM

Hellfire_WZ

L1 = voice chat, R1 = rear view, L2 = Left brake, R2 = Right brake

The others are correct :)

Not quite an update for the FAQ, but something else that I think will supplement it perfectly :) The first of many. I have tried to suppress the accent somewhat, but it's still quite pronounced ;)

That's a great tutorial Hellfire! There's nothing wrong with the accent, it's a bit more understandable than mine ;). It'll be interesting to see if there's anything I can pick up from future tutorials on the more advanced tracks.

Darkdrium777
29th June 2009, 06:02 PM
It's good, but there are a few things missing/wrong :)
There is no absolute need in of airbraking in the long left hander before accessing the Agton Research Dome for any ship, and in fact with Feisar you will be over steering just with the normal directional controls. Only Piranha and Triakis will need some airbraking, but even them under perfect conditions are able to complete this turn without airbrake assistance.
There is also a barrel roll opportunity on the off shore settlement straight with the three speed pads by avoiding the speed pad on the right, and using the second pad on the left as launch mechanism and barrel roll into the tunnel.
It is also possible to complete a perfect lap by using the airbrakes only twice maximum on Vineta-K forward and hitting all the speed pads on the line, but this does not account for barrel rolls. Using a barrel roll will require airbraking for any ship immediately after, except perhaps for the barrel roll in Acces Tube 2-B which is basically on a straight.
Finally, there is a dual barrel roll opportunity on exiting the Agton Research Dome where you use your turbo, if you don't have one. The first is very easy to achieve, by simply nosing up and taking the left lane you will be able to perform it. You then have to switch to the right lane in air and hit the speed pad to perform the one on the right (Something I haven't been able to do, but it is possible).

There's a couple of parts missing initially as this is a bit of a test of how well it came out. Consider it a beta version, or maybe a release candidate :) Also, I'm trying to take into consideration the file size. While it may stream nicely on Wegame, it's nearly 300MB this end ;) So the odd bit may be trimmed to preserve my sanity. Once I get the hang of the encoding and I can get the file size down a bit further without screwing the quality, I'll probably stick some more bits on the end of this one.

I'll definitely address the airbrakes bit though, ta.

I don't hear any sound on that video, and it stops just as the ship starts rounding the first curve. Am I doing something wrong? The download/stream was running at just over 100 KiloBytes/800Kilobits per second and it had loaded 29.5 megabytes after the first replay. An options screen pops up after the video stops running and offers replay or to go to other videos.

Hellfire_WZ
30th June 2009, 07:07 PM
? Strange, works fine here. Are your video/audio codecs okay?

Sausehuhn

Did you – and if you did – when did you get a new internet connection? :o Lance, you surprise me!

Lance
30th June 2009, 07:58 PM
Charlie, the vidaud should be okay; I'm running Vista, and I've got the latest Shockwave flash. Also, YouTube videos are working perfectly. I'm using the Opera browser, of course.

Max, I currently am on a wireless fed from a cable. My max bandwidth is theoretically 7 Megabits/875 KiloBytes per second. The most I've actually seen is 650 KiloBytes per second. But that is much faster than average, and was on a single file download. Fastest webpage delivery I've seen was 450 KiloBytes per second, but most of them are much much slower.

Excellent videos, Hellfire! Looking forward to what you'll have to say on some of the more complicated reverse tracks. :lol

A small observation on the AP one, though: it might be my lack of experience, but I found that I can get out of the first corner faster on Phantom if I don't go for all three speed pads, but stick close to the apex of the turn and only take the first speed pad and the one to the left following it. Might be worth pointing it out.

Please do the ZICO walk through before Chenghou.

Reason being.
There is NO NTSC Ghost available to be downloaded at El Habib's excellent site.

It's all PAL versions and none of the USA guys can work with it.

It might kill two birds with one stone.

OR anybody in the NTSC region that has beaten ZICO PLEASE UPLOAD YOUR GHOST!

You might want to have a hint or link to El habib's Ghost site in any further videos

Thanks everyone :)

Moa Therma is now up, and I've done the recording for the Beat Zico video. I've decided to stick to the "traditional" method of beating the time, partly because the tutorials are aimed at the beginner-intermediate bracket and the advanced techniques will probably be too much for them, but mainly because I can't do them myself! ;) I'll mention them in the commentary though

That's how I would say it. Colin or Rob should be able to confirm I guess.

Moa Therma is now up (...)

Moa Therma - http://www.wegame.com/watch/Wipeout_HD_Moa_Therma_Tutorial/

Keep'em coming, great footage/tips!

I don't mean to nit-pick too much, though, but at around 3:53 in the video, when explaining the narrow chicane before the second mag-lock section, you're suggesting a right sideshift when too far to the left... surely you wanted to say it the other way around (i.e. left sideshift when too far to the right)...

Or maybe I'm the one that's confused? :X

eLhabib
3rd July 2009, 04:26 PM
Zico to me looks like writing the word 'psycho' in a cool, phonetical way, so I would assume that it is pronounced the same.

Hellfire_WZ
3rd July 2009, 05:16 PM

The video is correct. If you take the right hander too wide (for example, if you're going for the weapon pad) you'll exit on the left and you'll need to sideshift over to the right to open up the narrow chicane. It's to do with the approach to the chicane, not the chicane itself. I do frequently mix up left and right, but I'm right in this case ;)

I'm gonna go with djKyoto's pronunciation as that's what I thought it was. If it's wrong, I'll look a twunt, but I'll have fun doing it :)

I'm a bit puzzled about the tracklist, isn't that the Pulse one? My WOHD only shows 8 tracks.. And I definitely miss a few of the tracks not being there in HD :/

Hellfire_WZ
15th July 2009, 05:04 PM
I'm using music from the whole series. From the ones I've used so far, Onyx was from Pure, Disconnect was a download for Pure, Sick was from Fusion, Landmass was from 2097, Tokyo from Pulse, PETROL from the original, and Know Where To Run was from 3. That's a thought actually, I might list where each piece of music is from in the video descriptions.

15th July 2009, 07:25 PM
Excellent job with the new videos as usual, Hellfire. :+

The Chenghou Project one even inspired me to attempt to finally take that corner using Goteki 45 without scraping the wall... while I didn't succeed with that, I equaled the lap time shown in the tutorial, so I was happy enough. :)

Very nice videos, keep up the good work :+

I now know what I've been doing wrong trying to turbo at the top of serbenco climb. I always wondered why I was having such a hard time keeping the craft down.

It's also nice to be able to see the effect airbraking actually has on cornering (turning the nose in as opposed to tilting the craft). Due to the general speed of the game and concentrating on what I was doing I had never really noticed this before.

Vineta K Reverse and Anulpha Pass Reverse are now up.

Also, a question. I'm starting recording for the Fury tracks tonight. As most players who are likely to use these videos will be using the Fury craft, should I record them using a Fury craft myself or stick with the original Goteki45 for continuity?

yeldar2097
30th July 2009, 05:01 PM
continuity methinks. just mention that the tracks are dlc (you never know, someone may think otherwise :P)

sny
30th July 2009, 05:03 PM
I'd go for the Fury version of G-45, since - like you said - that's probably what most people will use on Fury tracks, and it's nice if a tutorial emulates the conditions the player is likely to face when attempting the track on their own. :)

Moa Therma and Chenghou Project Reverse are now up, and what a f*cking performance it was to get the bastards uploaded! Firstly I had to change the music on Moa Therma as Youtube took exception to me using Exceeder, and I had to upload Chenghou Project four times! Internet died during first upload, computer crashed during second and I accidentally closed the browser window for the third...

Fury tutorials have now been recorded too using the original Goteki45. Decided to go down the continuity path, but you can also easily see the airbrakes as well :) They're also recorded in widescreen

sny
1st August 2009, 06:53 PM
Great additions again, Charlie, I've so much improving to do on the reverse tracks and these vids (especially the AP and CP ones so far) are immensely useful to achieve that. Only one elite gold medal left from the Fury campaign before I can hit the classic tracks again! =)

One small request though, if I may: on some of your videos we get to see the actual lap time of the recorded tutorial lap, but in some cases (such as AP and Moa reverse, from the latest batch) these times are off the screen. I know it would be too much of a hassle to re-record just to fix this, but even adding the tutorial lap time to the description of the videos would be of great help, to see how much you can improve by learning some or all tricks that are demonstrated.

Hellfire_WZ
1st August 2009, 07:39 PM
All of the original HD videos are already recorded. The off-screen lap timer was down to restrictions in the webcam software when I recorded the original videos. Since then it's been updated and I can now record in widescreen, so the Fury videos will have the times as well :)

All of the original HD videos are already recorded.

I thought as much, and hinted at this in my post as well. :) What I meant was whether you could update the description attached to the video on the WeGame site to include the lap times that aren't visible (if you can still check what they were, which on second thought could probably be an issue...). I'm referring to the same text field you use to name the song artist and title used for the video and the "Part of a series of tutorials" bit.

I didn't like the cannon at first, but then I realized how much it shakes the screen around for online opponents. You can really put another racer off their game for a few seconds with a partial clip AND THEN you can absorb what's left for energy!

Right then, now we're getting an influx of new players to the game thanks to the PSN outage, I've decided to resurrect my idea of a basics tutorial video. This would be literally explaining the absolute basic mechanics and workings of the game. So far I've got the following to work on:

- Basic controls
- Controlling the craft
- Handling and thrust differences between craft
- Racing lines
- Using airbrakes
- Using sideshift
- Pitching

How about a explanation more than a tutorial on control adjustments and remapping.
Nobody seems to include this, yet it can make a huge difference.
Especially that in HD/FURY a lower % is actually more sensitive, which seems counter intuitive when you think about it.

amplificated
6th June 2011, 02:17 AM
Actually, higher sensitivity is more sensitive - it corresponds to how much the accelerator is pressed down, so you will be at only 99% thrust if the button is 99% down, which is stupid because nobody wants to actively force their thumb down all the time like that.

Low sensitivity divides the sensitivity into brackets, i.e. holding the button down 13%, 3%, etc. will equal 20% thrust, so there's about 19% extra leeway if you're not holding the button down all the way down, so you'll still get 100% thrust. (I'm just guessing at the brackets, they're probably more likely to be divided in 10ths than 5ths, maybe more)

High sensitivity doesn't mean you only have to hold the button down a little bit to get full thrust.

It's only counter-intuitive at face value, but when you think about it, sensitivity can be looked at in more than one way.

Thanks for the FAQ Hellfire, the tutorial videos are some of the best I have seen for a video game, well put together should honestly be in game.

If you have videos already for the some of the things in the above quote, I would love to view them. Using the video tutorials to improve lap time for venom-rapier is great, but Phantom is a different beast in itself (so much fun though).

I have seen countless videos with amazing pilots (you, woopzilla, yeldar, etc) that utilize air-brake and side shift techniques that are borderline insane at the speeds they are going. Anyways thanks again for the help sir.

Hellfire_WZ
6th June 2011, 05:36 PM
Some of you guys may be able to help me out with this as I'm a little puzzled.

Is there actually any advantage to picking a high speed craft? I've just done two side-by-side comparisons of a sprint between HD FEISAR and Fury Icaras over short distances at full speed on Venom and Phantom, and both times were almost dead heats with the Icaras winning by only a fraction of a nose!

I assume the stat takes other factors into account beyond just top speed? As even over the course of a whole race I can't see this making any real impact

leungbok
6th June 2011, 06:17 PM
picking a fast craft (let's say icaras ^^) is interesting regarding the boost effect. I mean icaras is made to fly high and fast, as an example i don't see a very significant difference (there's a little one however) when i fly feisar or icaras on modesto forward for phantom speedlaps, except when i try my crazy boost before the big bump, it's significantly faster with icaras. At slow speed i find icaras clearly faster on the flat, but it can be psychological ! :p

Hellfire_WZ
6th June 2011, 06:22 PM
It just seemed really strange. I recorded both craft at top speed covering the same distance on flat track, and in a split screen side-by-side comparison there was almost no difference! That's on both Venom and Phantom.

You're probably right, it may be something to do with the turbo and speed pads. I'll give it a shot :)

EDIT: Very interesting! Just done a couple more comparisons:

1 - I repeated the speed test around the Moa Therma loop. The difference is more pronounced this time due to the longer distance but still less than I would have expected considering the speed difference between the two craft

2 - Speed pads and turbos are unaffected by any stat. I did the Moa Therma loop again with the Icaras and FEISAR, but this time hitting a few speed pads along the way. Icaras won by exactly the same margin as it did without them. i also compared FEISAR with Goteki45 as they have the same top speed but different thrust stats. It was a dead heat.

Chet_BG
6th June 2011, 07:25 PM
I've never done any real test between vehicles, but I played 2 hours speed lap on Vineta K to make a certain lap time with Goteki. I made a perfect lap and near perfect lines to achieve it. Then I tried with Icaras and I've beaten my time with 5-6 mistakes in the 3rd lap. So, yeah, I think it makes difference if you choose a fast ship... I still prefer Goteki, though. Nothing can compare to the awesome handling and starting boost :)

Frailavi
6th June 2011, 07:29 PM
I tested something myself today without even realizing this was going on but here's how top speed works.

Icaras Fury (100) = 792 km/h
Piranha Fury (100) = 792 km/h
Piranha HD (100) = 792 km/h
Triakis Fury (95) = 791 km/h
Auricom Fury (90) = 789 km/h
Harimau Fury (90) = 789 km/h
Mirage Fury (85) = 788 km/h
Assegai Fury (85) = 788 km/h
Mirage HD (80) = 786 km/h
Assegai HD (80) = 786 km/h
(75 doesn't exist)
AG Systems HD (70) = 784 km/h
Goteki 45 HD (70) = 784 km/h

(They can go above these, but you need a LONG straight without turning.)

I stopped testing the same stat speeds assuming it's the same. If you want to test a specific ship, feel free to. I can't be 100% certain it's the same.

blackwiggle
7th June 2011, 01:59 AM
I remember having trouble getting first place on Moa Therma while going for Arcade Perfect using AG-S, I switched to Icuras and got it almost straight away.
Maybe the specs for a crafts Top Speed only really come into play when racing against the AI.
When racing online or 2 player split screen these supposed speed differences might actually be compressed to a smaller difference in speed, or negated all together, it's just the handling that remains different.

I suppose Colin Berry could answer this one.

Speed definitely makes a difference, online and off.

It mainly comes into effect when there is no opportunity to BR - and largely on the lower speed classes, at that - but the speed difference between ships like the HD AG-S and an Icaras is quite noticeable. Definitely not as big a deal on Phantom.

I'd say on some tracks at Venom, the difference can be around a second per lap (e.g., Moa Therma), especially if you're without a boost to make chained BR's out of, so the difference in multiplayer will be greater unless you're lucky with pickups.

Don't tell me I'm the only one who has been leading a race, only to be overtaken by an Icaras catching up to me as they steal the weapon pad from me from behind?

Chet_BG
7th June 2011, 07:50 AM
On Venom Icaras can have more than a second per lap if no BR or Turbo is used. Icaras dominates the lower speed classes. They always catch up to me on straight lines...

http://www.wegame.com/watch/Team_Nordic_vs_The_Flying_Dutchmen_22_02_09_09_Vin eta_K_Rev_Splitscreen/

At the end of the first lap (24 seconds) I'm on the left of him on his screen, and he's on the left of me on my screen. Or possibly the other way around. It's confusing. Controls and a demonstration of what they do
How to remap controls and the importance of acceleration sensitivity
Explanation of the ship select screen, talking about the two different ships per team and explaining the stats. I've also included the fact that there are stats beyond what is displayed, and that the Fury ships are not overwhelmingly superior to the HD ones
Split screen demonstration of the differences in stats
Demonstration of airbrake use, showing racing lines with and without airbrakes.
Split screen demonstration of a good and poor racing line
Demonstration of various uses of sideshifting
Explanation of barrel rolling
Pilot assist - what it does and why you shouldn't use it
Weapon demonstrations and quick advice on how to use them effectively
Explanation of shield energy, the warning signs and how to restore energy
Strategies for pitching the craft, how it can be used to stick the craft to the track in difficult corners, or raising it to barrel roll
Effects of track inclination on the craft and how this will affect handling
Demonstration of how to do a boost start
Explanation and demonstration of the five speed classes
Brief explanation of the different game modes

At the moment I'm on the weapons demonstration. Still a way to go but it's starting to take shape quite nicely

However, I've had a think and I'm going to stay out of the whole online business. Friend of mine says he got them halfway through Aftermath, so I dunno if my save's bugged. I got lots of silver and bronze in that event tho, I'll see if getting some more points there fixes it.
Thanks for replying

Hmm, yeah the silvers and bronzes may be the issue. I know you have to get golds to get the Fury Campaign Legend trophy, but there's no added bonus for doing it on elite (other than pride ;))

hey, im sure everybody who's playing the game in 1080p is aware of this annoying frame-rate drops (slowdowns), especially on the fury tracks AND even more annoying (well for me) in zone modes, especially detonator. i have to say, that i played the game in 576i until 3 weeks ago & never really had those slowdowns (the CRT-TV i used to play with died). i couldn't live without wipEout so i went to the next electronics-store & got myself a fast pc-monitor (syncmaster bx2331)...
1080p looks fantastic and everything, BUT 720p is the resolution to play with!
it's almost as smooth as 576i AND still looks fantastic :)

I have no trouble with framerate drops I have to say though hd tvs and computer monitors are slightly different of course... could be you've got yourself a monitor thats optimized for high resolution photo viewing those are generally not as good at fps as your avarage hd(-ready) tv.

of course it's a gaming monitor (2ms), im not stupid u know.
and it's the ps3 that isn't able to deliver 60fps in 1080p when there's alot of action on screen, fact. reduce resolution = higher (more constant) frame-rate, plain & simple. same going as on PC.

I have only noticed slowdowns when there is a lot of stuff on screen, typically at the very start of a track when you have all 8 ships on the grid, but that is over in less than a second and doesn't affect gameplay at all.

I've never experienced slowdown in detonator; and it is incredibly rare in single races. In fact I think all slowdown issues have been online, which indicates it could be a bandwidth issue, which could affect your HDD... but that's pulling straws, and probably isn't the case. NFI, really.

I've been running the game on a Sony 1080p TV over 3 years this month, and I'm usually critical... yet I don't have any significant complaints regarding HD's performance. Oh and, screens don't really dictate any fps drop...

I've never noticed any significant framerate drop either tbh. Any more to the point I wouldn't want to go back to 720p, it looks rubbish compared to 1080.

Anyway aren't we in the wrong thread here?

maybe u guys don't understand what im talking about. i don't mean hard frame-drops, it's more like micro-stutter. i have 'homework' for u, plz set up ur ps3 to 1080p in system settings, go to zone mode, select moa fwd and any ship. now drive flawless until the transition from flash to sub-rapier appears (u should be in the last banked corner after 2nd mag-strip). believe me, u will recognise a very visible stutter during the transition. now set up ur ps3 to 720p in system settings, and redo the procedure explained above, u won't recognise any stutter at the transition between flash to sub-rapier now. hope u'll understand now.

Micro-stutters are a form of frame dropping, and therefore a part of the same category; i.e., they're rare. Next time I play HD I may give it a look, but I'm confident your problem is not widespread.

I am so sick of trying to get the beat zico trophy. Ive got to 30.90 and Ive done 1000 laps on the track to get it that close. I just want to see if i can get someone to do it for me XD. I have been following the video as close as possible and still cant beat it.

Take a break from it for a few weeks. Do lots of other venom and flash SLs / TTs, race online a lot, then go back and have another go. Something will just click and you'll do it pretty easily, promise :)

I got it. 30.73. When I was behind my ghost I noticed I went wide on the 2nd turn so I fixed that and beat the time. :D

Excellent work on the videos Hellfire, it helps to find something like this to suss out some of the things that have changed, things that would take many nights to get down, so thanks from an old wiper new to the game. :D
