View Full Version : How to troubleshoot and fix online problems

12th October 2008, 03:54 PM
This post is to help those who seem to be having some problems with some aspects of online play.

It should help those who cannot see games on the online board and possibly fix some of the in game voice chat that some experience.

What you need to know.
1] On your PS3 XMB,go to Network settings
2] Go to internet connection test and run it.

After it has run you will find at the very bottom something called NAT.
There are three types of NAT,funnily enough called NAT1,NAT2 and NAT3.

If you have NAT1 or NAT2 you probably won't be reading this post,as all should be working for you.
If on the other hand you have NAT3...well you have a problem.

You are behind a router/firewall. While your PS3 may be able to connect to the PSN and perform downloads/updates other functions may not work as intended.

That and another problem could be that your PS3 doesn't have a static ip address.

You can change your NAT3 to NAT2 and fix your router so that your PS3 has a static ip if you follow the instructions from the link below.which explains the process far better than I could.

While I find the "how to" from this link a great help, it doesn't really explain in any great deal how to resolve static ip addresses problems, otherwise known as Port Forwarding.

So here is another link that not only explains what you are doing and how, also helps you get into your routers settings and change them.

Hope this information helps.

Happy racing.

I am the first one to answer so if this is not appropriate, I do apologize.
First and foremost: blackwiggle, thanks for the help.

I did have some online problems with my PS3, but not of the variety you described. I need to test some tweakings to see if I solved them or not, however maybe I am not the only one.
I am in NAT2. At home I have a router, and a switch behind it. Internet connection is shared by three devices: two computers and the PS3. They are all connected through Ethernet cables (PS3 was previously in WiFi)

I had a lot of DC for the PS3 which would be a chore. Losing connection in the middle of online races and tourneys, losing it while playing solo (which cause a slowdown in the game for a second, very annoying while SLing). I recently had confirmation that my PS3 went offline when my computer would go in energy saving mode. I suspected the issue was coming from some sort of conflict between devices (switching on the PS3 would sever internet on a computer or vice-versa).
So I assigned static local IP adresses for each devices. The PSN worked like a charm all evening (which only happened once before) and I am waiting to see if this eliminate or minimize my Internet problems at home for several days and if it is not just a lucky break.

If so I can provide a quick walkthrough to those interested. I was also wondering if I was the only one to have experienced this.

After assigning a static IP to your PS3, did it go from NAT2 to NAT1? If yes, I would be very interested in a tutorial.

8th January 2009, 04:13 PM
I'll quote myself from the PS Underground forums (http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&message.id=3557973#M3557973):

Finding the necessary information:

If you are using a Linksys router [NB: Any router works the same way], I take it you know how to access the configuration page? If not, try entering any of the following into your web browser:;;; etc.

Switch the last two numbers around, but don't go too high they're always close to 1.

Next, for the PS3 static IP, you're gonna have to do some stuff on your computer. You say you're not tech savy so I'll assume you're using Windows. Steps for Windows Vista are highlighted in blue in white are those for Windows XP and previous versions. [NB: Colours do not match]

Click the Start button. Click on Run. / Use the dynamic search bar and search for Run, click on the result that comes up in the start menu.

A window entitled 'Run' should come up. Enter in 'cmd' without the ' ' and press Enter.

You should get a command window, with grey text on a black background. Type in 'ipconfig -all' without the ' '. A bunch of stuff comes up.

Scroll up or down the text that came up, until you find a line like this: 'Ethernet Adaptor Local Area Connection', or if you are using Wireless internet: 'Wireless LAN Wireless Network Connection'. More specifically, look for the name of your ISP somewhere in the text below that line.

Once you've found what you need, write down the following informations: Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, DNS Servers. These will be the three things you will need when setting up the PS3.

Configuring the PS3:

Turn on the PS3, go to the 'Settings' category and scroll down to 'Network Settings'.

Select the option 'Internet Connection Settings'. Choose the 'Custom' method.

Select Wired or Wireless, depending on your setup. (Additional steps for Wireless are in green.)

On WLAN Settings, select 'Scan'. Choose the name of your wireless network and go to the next pane to verify the SSID (Name) of your wireless network, then hit next.

On WLAN Security Settings, verify the encryption of your wireless network. You can set the encryption by configuring your router.

On Encryption Key, enter the password that you entered in the router, or the one that the router generated for you when you set up the encryption. Hit next.

On IP Address Setting, choose 'Manual' then next.

In the IP Address field, enter a derivative of your router's IP Address (The one you have to enter to get to the configuration page). So if for example you use to access the configuration, using is a good choice, for example.
You can also check under the parameter in your router's configuration called 'DHCP Range'. Choose an IP in that range, if DHCP is enabled (Most routers have it on by default.)

In Subnet Mask, enter what was given to you by the ipconfig -all command line on your computer.

In Default Router, enter what was given to you by the ipconfig -all command line on your computer.

In Primary DNS, enter what was given to you by the ipconfig -all command line on your computer.

In Secondary DNS (If there is one), enter what was given to you by the ipconfig -all command line on your computer.

Hit Next. On MTU, select 'Automatic', then Next. Set Proxy Server to 'Do Not Use' then Next. Set UPnP to 'On' or 'Off' depending on your router's configuration. Hit Next. Done, press X to save. Test the connection to see if everything is working, normally it should. If not, go back and check the numbers for Static IP, Subnet Mask, router and DNS Server. Also disable UPnP if you had it enabled, or vice versa.

Configuring the router:

Open up the configuration page of your router, go ahead to the location where you will set the DMZ (Refer to your manual or the online help).
Enter the IP you entered in the PS3's IP Address field, save the changes and you're done!

Hopefully this guide helps you.

NB: Edited for clarity and 'general purpose'. Only for setting up a static IP on the PS3 and assigning the router's DMZ to it.

@eLhabib: You cannot get NAT1 behind a router.

8th January 2009, 04:50 PM
@eLhabib: You cannot get NAT1 behind a router.

Not even if I disable the firewall completely? Btw I am pretty sure my 360 (which uses the same router) is NAT1 (can't check now because it's at a friend's). :?

8th January 2009, 07:43 PM
Hmm I'm pretty sure about that. Here, let's read the wiki article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_address_translation) at the same time :)

EDIT: Yeah, if you remove the firewall (Not a good idea), you can get NAT1. NAT2 is very fine ;)

EDIT2: strikethrough doesn't work?

9th January 2009, 10:43 AM
Removing the firewall for playing PS3 is not a problem. Since the PS3 can't be hacked (yet), there's no harm that can come to it from teh interwebz. Of course I do turn off my computer when the firewall's down.

Oh and what's strikethrough? Didn't find it one hat wiki page...

9th January 2009, 01:03 PM
for strikethrough is something you can use on the forum, like
for bold or for italic.Except here ;)

The effect is this: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c5/Gtk-strikethrough.svg/120px-Gtk-strikethrough.svg.png

eLhabib, you can use the guide I posted to use a DMZ for the PS3's IP, thus allowing you to keep your firewall up and have both the PS3 and the computer on at the same time :)

9th January 2009, 01:06 PM
Well it's not like I could surf the internet and pilot at phantom speed at the same time anyway ;)
But thanks.

24th April 2009, 11:48 PM
When I set-up an invite only race/tournament, and then attempt to select friends from the invite 'to' list via the check boxes, it only allows me to select one friend before telling me that the maximum number of players that can be selected has been reached. I therefore have to send the same invite separately to everyone, rather than to multiple recipients.

Anyone else had this or have suggestions?!

27th April 2009, 12:50 AM
I think this is just the way it works.

9th July 2009, 06:37 PM
i can't connect my PS3 now.
it used to work well but it's over, don't know why.

i set it on DMZ, but it fails the test on internet connection (i wait long, and it's a DNS error, even if it's the same as my computer)

also, if i ping the targeted IP adress with my computer, there is no response.
it's (i can see it on my router, see also and 138 )

what can i do? i was on NAT 2 before the problem, and my comp doesn"t have any.

fyi : automatic settings do nothing, still can't connect.
wire/wifi no difference
internet navigator works properly, i can see this post with it.

EDIT : used OpenDNS primary DNS : secondary DNS : and connecting is possible (and much faster than before)

After assigning a static IP to your PS3, did it go from NAT2 to NAT1? If yes, I would be very interested in a tutorial.

To use static IP is useless. You just do manually what the DHCP server in the router does for you. Also one needs to know what s/he is doing because it's easy to make a mess.

17th August 2009, 02:23 PM
Ive got a quick question, thinking of switching my PS3 over from Wi-fi to ethernet, anyone know if itll behave on the second network port from my computer if I bridge the two cards? Or anything I should know if I do?

17th August 2009, 02:27 PM
Depends on what particular modem/router you have.

6th September 2009, 11:07 PM
My pal could join, but never host a game - "unable to connect", "DNS", "network error" or something. He's a short vegetarian computer type and had a long list of techie things that he'd tried with NAT, router fiddling, wires/less, etc.

I was able to host when connecting through his machine. After much unhelpful web-trawling, it occured to me that his PSN name contained "..fuk.." and after creating a non-profane sub-account all is sweet.

Thought this might help some other lost soul.

29th September 2009, 10:41 PM
I've noticed that sometimes I will not receive a pickup after going over the pad, even when it's lit, I hear the noise, and know it should be active. Is this just a problem with lag that can't be remedied? In some eliminator races it happens more than half the time.

29th September 2009, 11:05 PM
It is called Vista Pad - well known online 'feature' of W HD ^^

29th September 2009, 11:58 PM
It is called a program glitch. A coding fault.

30th September 2009, 12:50 AM
It is called a Vista pad. A Windows fault.

There I fixed it for you. ;)

30th September 2009, 01:56 AM
I refuse to adopt the mistaken terminology of a person who blames a software operating system for the failure of a laptop harddrive made by someone completely different from the creator of the operating system, particularly since the software of the harddrive is not made by the makers of the general operating system either. Nor was the computer itself made by the writers of the OS. Nor does that Operating System hardware have anything whatsoever to do with the online gaming experience since the console and the network are of an origin quite unrelated to the criticised OS. I prefer to call something what it actually is.

30th September 2009, 02:11 AM

Tell me you didn't just post that. It's a joke dude, take it easy.

30th September 2009, 02:14 AM
I posted that not in response to your joke, but because of the continuing stupidity of the name and the non-validity of the motivation for giving it has bothered me for a considerable time, hence the venting of my view. Even if there were an actual parallel similarity of ineffectiveness [I have never seen a parallel in this case], the name is still too indirect and irrelevant to be an accurate description or offer a possible clue to the cause of the problem.

And now, to the fixing of the online problems. If they can actually be fixed. If this particular glitch nEver occurs offline, then either the program is not receiving data input because of connection cutouts or slowdowns, in which case the problem cannot be resolved unless your connection is made flawless, or the code that detects the pad crossover is too simple to allow for late detections, in which case, MAYbe the detection can be improved.

Anybody has difficulty connecting to WipEout online in North America?

All of a sudden, the game wont let me in. Its stuck on the "Connecting..." screen for an eternity. I tried logging off before starting the game and log myself within the game, but no, its useless. It happened to me for the first time yesterday evening and before now i never had any trouble logging in. Im not the guy who knows much about hardware and internet stuff, but i read the first post here and my PS3 is NAT2.

I asked DividedXZero to log on and he has the same problem as me (is in the US). Anybody knows if SL servers are having trouble with NA or something?

9th October 2009, 09:36 PM
As far as I'm aware the servers have been down (or simply not working) yesterday and today, Kyonshi. I hope it's maintenence rather than them going ka-put like the leaderboards.

I hope they're back up before tomorrow, otherwise they'll be no WipEout this weekend... The world cup will suffer a bit too if they don't come back online soon.

9th October 2009, 09:44 PM
I see Amorbis. But you're from England and can't play? I ask because i saw my buddy W5LX from France playing yesterday night when i happened to me for the first time... How is that supposed to work? Locations far from Europe suffer from this situation first?

9th October 2009, 09:47 PM
I don't know how it works, but I do know that I can't currently play. I see why location would affect it, but I guess it could. No one in my friends list that is European has been online on WipEout either today or yesterday, probably because it seems to be broken in Europe too :(.

9th October 2009, 09:48 PM
I take it that you didn't read the thread where Paul Tweedle said the servers are being taken offline for fixes? No times were given for specific outages and returns to service, so there's no predicting when you can or cannot get on.

9th October 2009, 10:08 PM
Sorry about bringing an issue already discused and announced Lance. I just dont follow enough all threads being pull out :)

9th October 2009, 10:50 PM
Oh, you should read all the threads, as I do. ;) naaaahhh :D

14th October 2009, 11:15 AM
All Official PS forums have at the top of the different forum topics.

If anybody bothered to check these announcements they would find that they usually give 3 days notice of dates & times the PSN will be down.

You don't need to become a Official PSN forum member to read these alerts.

But it does help if you become one,as you can tick in options to receive alerts like this.

Saves a whole load of infuriation and befuddlement.:D

14th October 2009, 03:16 PM
Link? Whenever I search for a Wipeout PSN forum, I find nothing. It may be a regional thing.

14th October 2009, 03:27 PM
I found this (http://www.us.playstation.com/News/ConsumerAlerts) on SCEA website, but not the PSN downtime things... Still very important to read.
Best you can have on SCEA website is this (http://www.us.playstation.com/support/ps3), on the right you have the network status.

Hiya All.
I've been racing on line and every now and again I have an in-race problem.
On "321 Go", all other ships do not move and I do not see them for the entire lap. When I complete a lap, I pass the other player's ships, still in their starting blocks.
However, the track position info on the right hand side changes throughout the race, updating me of my race position.
When the race finishes, times are given for all and it as if everything was fine.
Anyone else experienced this, and any ideas why?

Thanks Guys

28th November 2009, 03:51 PM
I've had something very similar. But I don't know why it happens. It's one of many freak occurrences that have sadly become more and more frequent with the more recent updates, particularly the last one.

9th January 2010, 03:28 PM
Hi, during online play there are certain times when the game just freezes. I've already deleted the game and reinstalled it with the latest update but the same problem still exists online.

I have NAT type 2 btw so no need to worry there. Has this ever happened to anyone?

9th January 2010, 03:44 PM
Never happen to me. Just turn off your firewall or similar features to check
whether the problem is related to those features or not.

Btw; Welcome on board!

9th January 2010, 03:47 PM
I've had plenty of occasions where the game has frozen, as have many others. I think we would need a little more detail on the frequency and type of freeze though. Can you offer a bit more explanation?

9th January 2010, 04:55 PM
frequency? What exactly do you need to know from it? and where do find info on that?

As for the freeze I dunno what type of freeze you call it but to describe it in a bit detail the game just literally pauses, the music continues and the sound effects keep looping. For example when someone lays mines, I keep hearing the mine sounds again and a again and again. That's probably the best I can describe about the freeze dunno if it helps you or not.

9th January 2010, 11:01 PM
He means how often does it happen. What are you doing in the game when the freezes happen?

10th January 2010, 01:16 PM
I would say once or twice a day during a 4hr period of playing.

If I recall all I did was race. I think maybe the only thing noticeable is when someone hits my ship with a rocket or bomb or whatever weapon. Sometimes this sorta thing happens sometimes it just happens out of no where.

10th January 2010, 01:27 PM
Are you looking back using the rear view at the time at all? There was a bug where the game would freeze when you look back. I'm not sure of the details as it was supposedly fixed before I knew anything about it. However, I did experience a freeze on a couple of occasions, after it was supposed to have been fixed, where I looked back at the end of the race as a quake was simultaneously approaching. That's the only thing I can think of right now though, which may not be of any use. People here have experienced all kinds of bugs and freezes along the way since the game's release, so hopefully you will get some more suggestions.

10th January 2010, 06:48 PM
Yes I always do that. So that's why it freezes.

I forgot to say this, but during Eliminator while spectating other vehicles I scroll to certain vehicles where they are in idle mode when I presume they're actually moving; I tried pressing L1 or R1 to scroll to another vehicle, but it won't let me till that vehicle gets destroyed.

28th January 2010, 10:49 PM
Is there a "network mode" in order to check lantency against the server and other things?

28th January 2010, 11:34 PM
Only in the PS3 settings > check network settings, you have to quit any game to check it.
I can't remember if it checks latency, best to get on to a internet speed test that will show it, use the PS3 web browser to do that

Unfortunately... it does not. It has to be done based on wipeout HD/Fury servers/clients. I suspect issues with my ISP, or worst: peering issues between my ISP and the network where the servers are.
I bet they have such measurements mode built in. To give user access to such mode would help them to troubleshoot latency issues with their ISP.

20th February 2010, 03:56 PM
Hello, I can't seem to get online - it just stays at the 'connecting' box on the menu screen. I left it for around a couple of hours but it still had the 'connecting' box up on the menu screen, and it refused to let me on.

I can get online with other games, it's just Wipeout HD Fury that seems to be the problem. The problem just happened today for some unusual reason as I was racing perfect yesterday.

If it helps...My NAT type varies between 1 & 2, but I don't know how often. The router I use has 7 built-in antennas so that if one fails it would scan through the other 6 for a clear connection. (I have this expensive router because there are a lot of appliances in the house that run on wireless)

20th February 2010, 04:29 PM
WipEout HD and Pulse servers, amongst other games, are down for maintenance. I can't remember until what time, something like 9 PM tonight. :(

20th February 2010, 05:05 PM
Ah, I thought it was my end... :brickwall

20th April 2010, 01:13 AM
When I try to play online it says "An error occurred while updating the game. Please try again" Ive test my connection and deleted/reinstalled the game and nothing!:brickwall:frown:

21st April 2010, 12:38 AM
Have you only got HD recently and this the first time you have tried to play online?
Or have you had played online before and this problem has only just started ?

And are you sure that the error massage is saying exactly .
QUOTE:"An error occurred while updating the game. Please try again"
is it saying "An error occurred while trying to connect. Please try again"

Because the two problems are very different.

21st April 2010, 05:33 AM
I've had the game since it's release, same with Fury when that came out too. I just recently had this problem.

When I click on online and it begins to connect, I get an error saing exactly:

"An error occurred while updating the game.
Please try again."

I haven't done anything with my connection recently that could have caused this problem. I've deleted and reinstalled the game twice and nothing changed.

21st April 2010, 08:28 AM
Doesn't seem like a internet/modem problem.

If you have deleted and reinstalled the game while keeping the old Wipeout saved game data on your PS3,It could be your saved game data is corrupted.

Try backing all your Wipeout saved game data on to a removable HD or USB stick first, then delete it from your PS3.
Now see if you can connect without that error message.
If you still get the message try using another user account or create one and repeat.
If still no joy , make sure no wipeout game saved data is on your PS3, delete wipeout/fury and do a fresh install again, try to connect to online straight away to see if game updates to latest version.

If it works after this, then it's a pretty good chance it's corrupted data that was the cause of the problem.
You can try to reinstall the GSD after you got it connecting back online from the USB or removable HD and see if it works, but you might find yourself back at square one again.

Anyway try the above a report back.

The only other thing I could think it could be is that if you are USA or Europe based , there is a possibility that the in-game Ad's that you suffer were/are going to change, and it's that what is not updating, not the game itself.

22nd April 2010, 05:31 AM
hello, just did the sony 3.30.0 update. and have backed up and deleted my saves a few times, with 00.00 change. doing a reinstall wont work because the game works fine if i go in through my roommates japanese psn guest account. so its not corrupted. it all has to be the bad psn name bug, i just need "BiLwiS" reset/fixed at the home base, http://www.wipeoutzone.com/forum/showthread.php?p=171373 mess# 356 (i do hate typing from the ps3)

i have never had a successful log on online with wipeout hd, i did just get the game, and the message from wipeout hd is without question "network error occurred while updating the game please try again".

22nd April 2010, 05:44 AM
I'll just wait till JACK [post above you] reports back if he had any sucess.

Whatever it is going on it has only just started happening and it would seem that it is only happening to people in the USA.

BiLwiS you have a PM.

22nd April 2010, 06:01 AM
thank you, would you mind sending me a psn friend invite to "BiLwiS" you can unfriend me later if you wish, i just would like to try to trick wipeout into letting me see if i can see any data on the in game wipeout community page which seems different yet still connected to the whole on line wipeout universe...as well as race stats, silly game does let me see global standings, for my off line play. either or, again thank you.

22nd April 2010, 06:06 AM
I can't ATM as my PS3 is in for repairs ,not expected to get it back for another 2 weeks.:frown:
I'm sure one of the other zone members will help you out, best if you post a introduction in the Pilots Lounge area of the wipeoutzone, explain your situation & request in the same post.

29th April 2010, 03:31 PM
I would like some feedback on this. I've been playing online and have noticed that the times given for people I'm racing against do not match what I've witnessed whilst racing.
For example if I pass someone that I've been trailing for ages and just nick in to win it on the finish line or indeed if someone just manages to pass me to win out the 2 of us then the times for the race should be reflective of this.....but they are not. Up to 5 seconds is the difference shown in the race times where as on the track it was a split second.

Is this lag? Or a lousy underdeveloped online environment? Or is it just me??

29th April 2010, 04:48 PM
Massive lag. End of race times are accurate, what you see on the track very often isn't.

23rd July 2010, 04:11 AM
Getting the dreaded "an error occurred while contacting the server" error.

I can connect and play online with any other game.... but I only want to play this one, naturally :)

I have been successful in playing online in Wipeout, this only started in the last week.

My PS3 is using NAT type 2.

PSN ID: akira_2_5_0_1 .

Tried another PSN ID- same thing.

Tried the log out, launch app and auto-sign in fix.... nothing.

Set IP address to static.
Per PSKC article opened these ports on my router:TCP Ports: 80, 443, 5223, and 10070 - 10080 UDP Ports: 3478, 3479, 3658, and 10070. No dice.

Been offline, for just this game, 5 days now.

Disabled Media Server - no change.

Router is linksys WRT54G, however when I bypass the router and run an ethernet line from my modem to the PS3 with easy automatic settings I sign into PSN, but error out when I try to play Wipeout HD online, same as wired or wireless to the router.

Tried setting my PS3 IP as DMZ host on my router. No go.

Also, deleted game, reinstalled wipeout HD and unlock key (No Fury add on yet). Launched game, game automatically installed its update. Went to "online" and.... SAME THING.

Network is up per one of my friends. Oddly, If I receive an invite from a friend they show in the live game data feed at the bottom of the screen. I can see their name, and their current status/track, and also in the "community" list but if I try to connect to them I am booted back to main menu.

Any help greatly appreciated!!

23rd July 2010, 05:48 AM
Try starting wipeout HD before signing into the PSN.
For some reason if you do things back to front it loads online OK
That usually fixes the problem.:)

23rd July 2010, 02:22 PM
@blackwiggle Did the above- turned off autosign in on PSN. Restarted machine and went directly to game. went to online, game prompted sign in to PSN, did so.... and got the same error.

Also, deleted all save data last night :cold - had no effect except purging my medals.

24th July 2010, 01:26 AM
Have you tried making a new user account and race under that name?
I hope you had backed up your game save data, there was no reason to delete it as I doubt it has anything to do with your problem.

Are you getting an error code number?, If so what is it?
Or just a cannot connect error message?

There was a problem that was happening to people around a year ago where they couldn't login to online using their proper user name, but they could if they made another user account, it was a real PITA for all concerned and it took SL an absolute age to sort because they couldn't replicate it.
It got to the stage where one of the forum members was giving individual names of the effected to SL so that SL could manually reset those names on the servers, but even that didn't work for long, it finally got fixed around a month before FURY got released with a game update.

I just hope for your sake that this bug hasn't made a return.:(

Since the sudden influx of new HD players due to the game being free with PS+, a lot of old glitches are starting to reappear, like people coming up on online races as somebody else, which I think might somehow be related to your problem.

What next?
Not the dreaded "Vista Pads" again, that would suck more than a thousand vacuum cleaners

24th July 2010, 01:38 AM
Thanks very much for your response and assistance.

No error codes, just "an error occurred while contacting the server". Never thought I'd wish for an eight digit string instead... that would shed a little more light.

In hindsight, losing gamesaves was not a huge issue... hadn't gotten terribly far, just a few events. This is the first glitch I've had so I haven't been in the habit of backup yet...

I will create a brand new account and update this thread ASAP.

Blackwiggle, you nailed it, by crackie. :hyper I created a blank account and got right in! Thing that tripped me up was I thought a secondary account on my console was used seldom enough to qualify - that was wrong!

So I have *2* PSN IDs to report as in need of correction on the server -

akira_2_5_0_1 and ashuhleigh.

How can I get in touch with Studio Liverpool et al. to correct? I put this in a thread referenced on the playstation.com boards but did not see activity over there, here it is:

Many thanks - this was bugging me more than I care to admit :)

24th July 2010, 02:10 AM
Glad you got a result.:)
Also sorry you can't use your preferred user name to play HD, well at least at the moment.:brickwall
Hopefully SL will be watching for problems since the sudden influx of new players, but to be honest I think that's wishful thinking on my part.

Wow.... so tonight I perform the PS3 Firmware Update 3.41 as REQUIRED to get into the online play menu.... this is done while signed into the blank, never-been-used-before account referenced 2 or 3 posts ago... and I get the *same flipping error* as before! This makes 3 out of 3 accounts with the same "an error occurred while contacting the server" message, and no ability to play with others offsite, -just on this game-. What gives? Am I not cool enough? SaturnReturn seems to think so. Anyone want to chime in and tell me I'm not as alone as I feel in getting this glitch?

27th July 2010, 07:25 AM
Well that's not good.:-
Have you got a friend who lives nearby that has their own PS3 with wipeout HD installed?
Reason I ask is because this problem is very hard to trouble shoot unless you have somebody else you can do a direct comparison with.
I'd suggest if you have somebody like above you test out a few things to narrow down the possible problem.
Actually these are pretty much need to do things if you want to sort this problem.

You can do it a couple of ways but doing both would be best.
1]Take your console to somebody else's place and use their internet and see if you still have problems [try it with all 3 of your PSN accounts], if no problems then you know it's your internet setup at home that's causing it.
Copy their settings & setup as close as possible when you get home.
2] Have somebody else come around to you place with their console with wipeout HD installed and use your internet, if no problem then it means something is wrong with your consoles wipeout install/ consoles internet settings.

The only other thing I could think of that might cause these problems are.[grasping at straws here]

A] You bought and downloaded HD from a PStore that is not the USA one [I'm guessing your USA based by the time displayed under your user name]
I'm not even sure if this would normally have any effect, but since the problem you are suffering is rare it might.

B]When you first set up HD with a fresh install, it asks you which area [country] you want to choose for online, maybe try changing that.
You used to be able to change it, I had a quick look but can't seem to find the option any more, it might of disappeared with a game update?

Sorry I can't be of more help, but I've re-read your posts and it seems that you have tried everything except the above

Has anyone encountered freezes lately when looking back? Recently I started playing again and every time a freeze occurred, I was looking back.

4th August 2010, 11:47 PM
Yes it's a well known game glitch.
Just never use reverse view when racing online.
Same situation with trying to use the none functioning in game voice chat, don't bother.
Virtually impossible to race and hold down the button needed to chat at the same time anyway.

8th August 2010, 03:08 PM
So any patch coming up for that? I almost automatically use it for eliminator.

8th August 2010, 11:01 PM
None that anybody is aware of, it's been like that forever for both none functioning controls when online so I wouldn't be holding much hope for a patch.
There used to be a major online problem with what was commonly known as "Vista Pads" where a lot of the weapon pads didn't work, this was far worse and a game killer, I think it was fix this or the other, so the pads got fixed.

14th June 2011, 03:53 PM
Hello, I recently got back into wipeout and I cant seem to connect to online with my main account. Always says error when I try, other account logs in fine without any trouble though. Was wondering if anyone knows if theres anyway to fix this.

15th June 2011, 12:06 AM
Oh no, not this problem again.
This particular problem was happening for around 20 zone members nearly 2 years ago, god knows how many none zone members were suffering the same thing.
At first [I think it was either Elhabib or HellfireWZ]from here got in contact with the people at Studio Liverpool and gave them a list of the names effected, and they were manually reset at the server, that worked for a while then it came back again, and it stuck around for many months until a game update came out.

In the mean time people had set up second accounts that were closely named to the originals [Kanar was effected- he use kanar-is-back]

There is really nothing you can do about this unfortunately.
I can tell you it's not a internet connection issue.

If you have only just started playing HD/FURY it's not that much of a problem, still bloody annoying as I can understand people wanting to use their main account.
Only thing to do is use a different account and keep checking to see if things fix themselves and you can eventually re- connect with the main.

15th June 2011, 12:20 AM
Thanks for the reply, I played hd back when it was released but came back because of the free fury add on and everybody on my friends list getting it.

15th June 2011, 02:07 AM
OK, so this problem could really still be from the original one, not a recurrence.
Send a PM to Kanar and ask him what he did to sort the problem out, just go to the HD world cup thread and click on his name on the first page.

15th June 2011, 06:12 PM
arh sadly i've no surnatural powers, as blackwiggle said we were lucky enough here to have elhabib connected to sony liverpool by that time, he transmitted 'em a list of users affected by this server error. sorry to hear this bug is still around... maybe you could try sony's customer service, giving 'em all the details of your online error. perhaps it's not exactly the same bug we got 2 years ago. they could eventually transmit your problem to sony liverpool then. maybe try to contact elhabib here, he could still have a contact at sl. hope you could sort this out quickly :|

15th June 2011, 06:38 PM
Thanks for the replies, I sent a pm to elhabib. Also read online some people were having the same problem and that having more than 50 people on their friends list was the cause, could be the same for me since I was able to play online back in the day.

13th July 2011, 12:21 PM
Me and Jan709 were trying to get some races in earlier this morning and we were both stuck on the "Connecting..." screen. After deciding to reboot our systems we were able to get on, but this may have been the servers coming back on coincidentally. We weren't sure. We got to get our races in, though.

13th July 2011, 01:02 PM
Yeah I had the same problem earlier this week.
I found a fix by accident.
That is you create a new user name, but don't register it with the PSN.
You can open any downloaded games with a unregistered user account, so open HD/FURY, then go to connect to online, the game will ask you to sign in, but since you are trying to do it with a unregistered user name it will do it with your main account, you will find that you will now be able to connect, and it will be under your main account.

Why it works with this extra step is beyond me.

6th August 2011, 12:45 PM
I don't really understand what I'm doing wrong, but the fix you gave cannot work for me.

I started the game under a unregistred account, but when trying to go in online mode, the game only says that I have to be registered on Playstation Network ... end of discution.

I retryed with my main account which was expriencing the "connecting ..." problem, but it wasn't solved ... u____u

6th August 2011, 12:57 PM
How long have you been having problems Sch@dows?
The inability to connect seems to hit different regions sporadically.
I'll get it for around a week, then I'll try something like I posted before and it will suddenly fix itself.
Have you tried changing servers by pressing square? [I suppose you can't as you need to get to the online boards first]

6th August 2011, 05:10 PM
I haven't played online for quite some time now. I tried several time today since this morning (9hour ago), but still won't go to the online board.

6th August 2011, 11:58 PM
The PSN in Europe has been down for maintenance today, so nobody has been getting online.

7th August 2011, 10:38 AM
EDIT : Indeed, I finally found what you were talking about. A maintenance was schedule yesterday between 4:00AM and 9:30AM GMT for SCEE games only. I suppose a problem occured since I could connect even in the afternoon.
I successfully connected to the PSN yesterday in the morning, and even bough some game on the PS Store, just before trying to play WipEout online.
But, since I couldn't play WipEout with my friend, we finally decided after lunch to play another game together (Resident Evil 5) which we did for half the afternoon.

11th August 2011, 07:15 PM
Has anyone had problems with WipEout HD since the new firmware upgrade? I can't get the game to start. It'll display the normal "Sony Computer Entertainment" screen, then it just hangs. The PS3 hasn't crashed, as I can still get back to the XMB, but the game just won't start.

This has only occurred since the firmware update and no other games seem affected.

Anyone else having problems?

15th August 2011, 10:32 AM
morfeo 378 has also problems since the new FW-update. he can not play online... any solutions?

15th August 2011, 12:37 PM
Save game save data to a USB stick, and any ghosts etc, lot's of little files that wouldn't total 1mb.
Delete that data from console, delete game from console.
Go to PSTORE, download history, re- download game, start game, try go to connect online to get update.
If it works then all good.
Re-install game save data & ghosts.

I'm not entirely sure that anybody is able to connect to the online boards straight away with a brand new HD/FURY download, without first winning at least one campaign grid medal.
You might have to do this first before you have access to online, then you will know if the problem is fixed.

15th August 2011, 06:56 PM
is that the 3.70 firmware ?

I had problems withthat too. i couldent open any psn messages without the console freezing, or access the store or play games online. also people on my friends list didnt appear

to solve it i did the database rebuild thing ( howto posted by blackwiggle a while ago) and i haven't had an issue since.

How to thread here (http://www.wipeoutzone.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7956)

16th August 2011, 01:42 PM
I think sinus1's profile's been completely knackered by the 3.7 update, it seems he had to re-install the game too. In fact I was going to ask if anyone knew his new account name.

16th August 2011, 01:51 PM
I think he can choose 1 out of his 20 other accounts lol..

Am I the only one who didn't experience any trouble at all since this update?

16th August 2011, 02:07 PM
I've not had any problems either R3, although I was away between Thursday and yesterday.

16th August 2011, 02:36 PM
I tried to play online right after seeing s0mmieUK's message, and didn't experience any trouble with 3.7.

16th August 2011, 03:27 PM
think I've solved the problem is that the PS3 had tilted, and the solution has been put right, I guess it will be a problem with the network cable, thanks for warning novide

18th August 2011, 07:56 AM
My issue was resolved by deleting HD/Fury completely and redownloading and reinstalling it. Took a while, but things seem to be running smoothly again now.

6th November 2011, 01:39 AM
I've tried anything I could find to try to connect but I continually get the network error. Has anyone figured out anything new?

6th November 2011, 03:38 AM
I was going to suggest changing servers, but since you can't get to the online board that option is not available to you.
Only thing I could suggest is to save the WOHD saved game data to a USB stick, then delete everything, including the game, then go to download history at the PStore and re download/ install the game
Try connecting online before reinstalling the game save data.

7th November 2011, 01:13 AM
Thanks for the help, but I did just try downloading it again, without fury, and I get the same problem. I am planning to get a new PS3 (not for this reason) this week so I hope that will finally solve this problem.

15th November 2011, 04:53 AM
My game has been crashing an awful lot lately. It's been happening most often during online races, though it happened twice during offline races in the past two weeks. My screen freezes, but the music continues playing uninterrupted. Holding Start or the PSN Home button does nothing. I have to press my PS3's power button to hard reset it; even then, it beeps three times and shuts down (as it does whenever the console freezes in any game).

I do not know if this is due to playing on Fury tracks (it crashed on Talon's Junction twice over the last four days). I don't know if this is due to playing 8-man races online with us all firing weapons at each other. WOHD is the only game that has been freezing my PS3; it is also my only downloaded/disc-less game. All of my disc-based games run for hours just fine. Could the hard drive get too hot from extended play and decide, "I'm not trying to load this anymore?"

EDIT: Happened again just minutes ago. Three man race in Modesto Heights. I'm on the 4th lap when I hear "Contender Eliminated" and my game freezes. One of the two guys in front of me exploded and so did my Playstation. This is getting old!

3rd March 2012, 09:59 PM
Experienced several crashes today playing online, and I apologize. I don't know what caused it, my net worked fine on pc though.

19th February 2013, 11:41 AM
For some 6 months now I have had problems with online connectivity and am unable, mostly, to connect to individuals in a lobby. The game, mostly, seems to connect to Wohd server well enough but 9 of 10 times will fail to connect to a game. I have tried all of the many ways we all know and love to get things to work, deleting game, redownloading it, etc, etc etc. In my minds eye I have an image of a decrepit becobwebbed server, unloved and unattended in a shed somewhere in the Mojave desert struggling manfully to plug me into someones game and failing to find the socket. This is my last ditch effort to save this, my very favourite game ever ever from uselessness. Is there anyone anywhere I can talk to that may throw light onto why the game has suddenly found it difficult to make these connections and better still, could make suggestions as to how to make the server connection more robust. Pretty certain the problems are not at my end. NAT2 by the way, same as ever. No prob with any other game.

21st February 2013, 11:14 AM
Well if you have come back again ......?

I think it might be a corrupted game save.

Save all your game save data to a USB stick, this includes all your Ghost SL &TT saves [If you want to] ...you can fit it all on a 500mb USB stick.
Same goes for all you other games [multiple USB drives]

Then checkout this link.
Do what's recommended ...then report back if you are still suffering problems

23rd February 2013, 11:13 AM
First of all, thanks for response blackwiggle.

Did as recommended, sadly, no difference. Screen hangs at "connecting" after trying to enter an online race then after several minutes says words to the effect "server error, host has left game or too many players", then, "retry or return to main menu" rinse and repeat ad nauseum. This is a "new" problem that I cannot see is connected to any changes made at my end unless the Virgin Superdud, which is the only alteration to my system in recent months is not as efficient at finding addresses as the previous modem/router thingy. Not technically minded, its just a feeling I get that I'm making a call that the server is hard pushed to find a number for and then gives up, if you get my drift. There is no pattern to when it will connect to a game or the much more likely event that it won't. It all seems a bit fussy about who it connects me with now. Odd.

30th October 2013, 05:17 PM
Hey guys! I don't know if any of you guys have had this yet but every time when I race on sebenco climb my console decides to crash and now it seems to be happening with tracks like ubermall also, it only happens when I am racing online. Kinda sucks to be honest :/

30th October 2013, 05:50 PM
tried reinstalling yet?
it's know that wipeout tends to crash from time to time, but it's usually random, so if you say it keeps happening on sebenco, there might be sth wrong =/

30th October 2013, 06:02 PM
Yeah i'll give it a try mate and hopefully the problem should be sorted, thanks man :)
