View Full Version : Prototype WO1 pictures?

27th March 2008, 04:22 PM
I'm not sure how much the footage from Hackers counts, but at the same time I have no idea what stages Wipeout went through in development.

I was looking for my Okami strategy guide, I either misplaced it or put it with my multiple hundreds of gaming magazines from the last nearly 20 years. As I go through all these old magazines, I've gotten stuck looking at articles from different eras in games. Going through the mid 90s and seeing early PSX/Saturn/N64 titles, I stumbled across an early Wipeout shot. It got me wondering what early builds of the game looked like, so if anyone else happens to have early shots they could share, I'd be appreciative :)

Thanks for the old magazine pic. Very interesting to see.

I have a few at home, will try remember to upload tonight..
I remember reading on here at one stage that wipeout was pencilled to be an on-rails shooter (think a scifi panzer dragoon) before it became a racer, I haven't seen much of the game from that period, but I think that's what it still was at the point of it's appearance in hackers

2nd April 2008, 05:45 PM
I don't remember any rails in Hackers; does anybody recall some sort of on-rails behaviour of the ships in the movie? It's been a long time since I saw it.

2nd April 2008, 07:00 PM
I don't mean like a train, as in literally on rails...
just that the ship follows a set route and you aim it's weaponry, rather than having full control over the ship itself

anyway, I found my screenshots...
looks like there were 4 or 5 early shots

this (http://helix.net.nz/~lion/Pictures/WipEoutZone/Early/295~2396.jpg) contains 2 of them
here (http://helix.net.nz/~lion/Pictures/WipEoutZone/Early/wipeout-intro-track.jpg)'s another
and this (http://helix.net.nz/~lion/Pictures/WipEoutZone/Early/wipeout-intro-track-2.jpg) rounds out the set
but there's also some low res stuff in this magazine preview (http://helix.net.nz/~lion/Pictures/WipEoutZone/Early/terramax.jpg) of the original wipeout that's worth looking at, as is this (http://helix.net.nz/~lion/Pictures/WipEoutZone/Early/wipeout%5B1%5D.jpg) wipeout64 review, which features one of the above shots

this (http://helix.net.nz/~lion/Pictures/WipEoutZone/Early/295~4896.jpg) was also shown in this (http://helix.net.nz/~lion/Pictures/WipEoutZone/Early/wip3out21ad%5b1%5d.jpg) article about the then-upcoming wipeout3

2nd April 2008, 09:10 PM
Hence my qualification of ''some sort of on-rails behaviour''. :)

Thanks for digging out the screenshots.

I've watched hackers a lot (too often ;)) and most of it looks pre-rendered anyway.
if memory serves (can confirm when I get home) the bits that look like game, rather than cutscene, have Dade moving a crosshair around on screen.

2nd April 2008, 11:17 PM
As though the ship were following a set 'groove' and could only move the weapon? [reminds me a bit of the original 'Outrun' racing game] Wish I had Hackers now so I could watch the Wipeout scene again. I have the impression in memory that it looked a bit like Tubeslider.

Well, that's an easy request to fill! 8 )

3rd April 2008, 02:46 AM
It's an easy request to fill for someone not on dial-up. YouTube is total crap for me. I've never gotten anything properly viewable from them.

Even on sites that do give one a proper download file, I usually don't bother cos it takes all of my bandwidth for hours to get a video.

But that is not yoUr problem, just my fault. :)

Am I the only one who can't hear anything? Audio missing?

7th April 2008, 02:06 PM
I just love how they refer to the wipeout vehicles as "sleds". Lovely term, just sends you right into the future, doesn't it?

Thanks for the pics Lion, good stuff.
Re: Hackers - Thank goodness Wipeout didn't end up like that.

10th April 2008, 01:37 PM
as is this (http://helix.net.nz/~lion/Pictures/WipEoutZone/Early/wipeout%5B1%5D.jpg) wipeout64 review

The editor of this article didn't really know what he was talking about, I feel. This is the game that solidified my addiction to wipeout....and racing games for that matter.:+:+

Am I the only one who can't hear anything? Audio missing?

no, I got nothing as well

23rd April 2008, 05:46 PM
Is there anyone still at SL/Psygnosis/Sony who might still have the original rendered source video for the Hackers "arcade" scene? I'd love to see the sequence in its entirety, and at possibly better resolution.

Yes, I'm asking a lot, hoping for old pre-wipeout source files, but, perhaps it's doable?

The first uphill run at Terramax is so recognizable yet with that HUD and that environment it's so alien. My word.

9th June 2009, 03:56 AM
Oh... my... god... I cant believe what I just watched. that was great :D I've been wanting to see that from the moment I first saw the movie.... the audio was admittedly AWFUL, but that's beside the point.... that was a fun surprise to come home to ^_^

10th June 2009, 07:42 AM
Type in 'Hackers Wipeout' in the youtube search bar. It's the first one. And thank you, lunar. Getting a rep point on my first post has to be a record:lol

10th June 2009, 03:58 PM
I just noticed that Mass Effect uses some of these sound effects during meteor storms on alien planets :D
Anyways, I posted on the comments. Is it your YT account?

10th June 2009, 08:44 PM
Nah, it's not my account. I'm not 32 years old.

23rd June 2009, 05:19 PM
That huge jump needed to be in the game. It's always nice to see where games were before they were what they are today.(Say that 5 times fast)

10th August 2009, 04:50 PM
Bit of a bump but I don't care that footage was smegging awesome. ^___^! I loved that, I just wished the game used that idea for beginning of a race.

10th August 2009, 11:07 PM
I really don't like the idea of not actually piloting the ship. To me it just doesn't feel right.

5th October 2009, 09:05 PM
i'm looking for a piece of art, that i'm sure i've seen someone post on the site before, it resembles this (see image below)

but is from the original game. i've looked through the forum but can't find it, can anyone help me out. it's a high quality pic of a ship in the art style they were using back on the original game and 2097.

5th October 2009, 09:44 PM
My first impression is that the illustration is from a more recent game.

5th October 2009, 10:29 PM
yeah, the one i posted there, is indeed a new image, ala pulse or HD. it's just similar to the one i'm after in terms of layout.

6th October 2009, 12:04 PM
I think I know what picture you are looking for, and I have it on my pc at home. shoot me a message so I don't forget, and I will post it when I get home.

6th October 2009, 04:15 PM
Is that one of the big renders done by Lee Carus?

6th October 2009, 06:46 PM
Is this what you were thinking of, DawnFireDragoon? (http://www.wipeoutzone.com/images/wipeout_1_render_crop.jpg)

Don't thank me for it, thank Infoxicated for posting it. It is a really nice render, it has a 90s feel to it. I found it in the archive (http://www.wipeoutzone.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-1484.html).

6th October 2009, 09:36 PM
OK, that is one tight render. Wish there was a higher res version of it, that would be my permanent desktop background. The picture title is Wipeout_1_render_crop.jpg. This suggests a larger version?

6th October 2009, 10:12 PM
YES! that's the one Amorbis, thanks.

I love this picture, does anyone have a larger version of it at all. And for that matter anything similar. i love the old wipeout art.

edit. woooah, sorry guys, i followed the link and found infoxicated's original post with the larger version. Thanks for your help!!!! :) :) :)

also, it would appear it is indeed a render by Lee Carus Lance.

6th October 2009, 11:28 PM
Yeah, that's the one I was thinking of, and the 558K version is very nice, but the 2 meg one that I seem to recall I once had is fantastic, effing effing fantastic.
