Hang on eight, EIGHT new in game racing teams?

Oh yes you can take your own pictures thats my memory stick getting full :banzai
Some sweet screens there, the track on the last one looks good for chaos not much room to avoid bombs there, unless you can fly along that wall

Wicked News!!!!!

What about the PS3 though? I picked mine up last week and I am very impressed so far, F1 looks very impressive, can't wait for more details on the PS3 version of Pulse.

Let the good times roll!

This is interesting, indeed! The military Triakis we were told about looks nice. Assegai, Feisar and AG-Sys looks as usual, and maybe also Auricom. What's the green one? The shape is very close to Goteki45, but the left and right of the front does not come together. I like the shape of it. There is a red and yellow ship that looks like the Feisar to me. Does anyone know which team it is?

I assume that the screenshots are taken from the PC developer platform, correct? The graphics are stunning, very smooth... but I assume it will be a little less smooth on the PSP. But from the pictures I imagine an overall improvement of the graphics. Sweet! :D

Lance
27th March 2007, 11:09 AM
In pic 4, the nearest ship looks surprisingly like a WO3 Auricom in camo. :)
I note that the fusion Auricom look has returned in pic 5.
The 'exhaust' trails look great, and I very much like the design of the red&yellow [Piranhacolours] ship and the one in pic 6 that is yellow, green, and blue.

This is extremely cool news! I didn't think it would be out as early as September. Wow! Guess they've been working on this for a while. I like all the new ideas explained. Very versitile gameplay, and I like how the tracks are reversible. Very cool.

I wouldnt panic about that, Its only in places you are goign to be glued to the track, so the rest of time youve still got the floatiness we've come to expect.

Great stuff all this, beginning with a Wipeoutzone exclusive. :+

I have only one real wish for this game - that Pulse is only playable at one cpu speed. This could be achieved by increasing PSP security or, preferrably, by making the game run at the highest speed possible in the first place. In my opinion, if overclocking is possible people will do it. As a result online games will lag, which we`ve seen on kai when cpu speeds don`t match up, and leaderboard times may not be trustworthy.

I`m sure the mag-strips will cause some debate, but then I`m just as sure that SL will make a great job of this game and will not ruin the formula. Real online play is just a dream come true. :dizzy Fantastic days ahead :D

EG.r and Xios fused I would "guess" ;)

So, these screens look really great! only thing I don't like yet are some ship models as they look too similar to Pure's.
But I know the game will turn out just great. I just know it :)

Sven
28th March 2007, 12:23 AM
Wow, this almost looks better than Pure, and that's still among the best looking PSP games.

Photomode sounds sweet. I really enjoyed photomode in Gran Turismo 4, and I was actually thinking about how sweet it would be if I could have it in Wipeout. Such a mode is better suited to the PS3 with more rendering power, but it's presense in the PSP game all but assures that it will be in the upcoming PS3 Wipeout. I only hope that you can take photos of in-race moments.

Thank you Sony and thank you Studio Liverpool for recognising us adrenaline fans out there...:) 2097/XL was the reason I bought a PSX, Fusion was the reason I bought a PS2 (although it was lacking in experience), Pure was the reason I got a PSP. EG-X = EG-R + Quantax ? Oldschool Qirex in maroon and beige. Yes, please :D

I've got the impression from all those news here and there that the press release included a full list of racing and music tracks but none of the outlets have released it to public in it's original form yet and are just randomly quoting it.

WOW! Just read the news on kotaku, this is GREAT indeed! With all the community feedback the devs have from Pure, this is bound to turn out EXCELLENT!
Btw, Colin, if you read this, I take it what we see on the screenshots are placeholder textures? I already like the design of some of the ships' bodies - new FEISAR looks ace, and that (new?) team in red and yellow (2nd eurogamer screen) already gets me hyped up - very old schooley. Just promise me Assegai is back in the game and I'm happy!
Oh and Max will be stoked about EG-X I guess!

Sausehuhn
28th March 2007, 06:17 PM
Ahahaha, you're so damn right, eL. Got so excited when I heard about EG-X. Maybe it will be time to change my EG.r avatar then.
And Assegai's in again. You can already see it on the screens. But it's a shame (maybe that sounds to hard/rude, "shame" isn't really the right word), that some ships do have a very, very similar body compared to Pure's. On the high res screens you can see that you beloved Assegai hasn't changed it's body at all. At least it looks like it hasn't.

I'm just wondering on how far the game's progress is now. What's gonna be changed till the final version is available. For example the new weapon pad design looks nice (even though I would have liked a deeper colors more) and then the speed pad looks like Pure's one which does not fit with the new weapon pad then.

But I'm sure SL knows what they're doing. http://www.wipeoutzone.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

Well I pop in here after yet another absence (8 week old daughter - she's a cutie!) and here we have a brand new Wipeout! This is great news! The shots look nice. Very much looks like the successor to Pure and that is no bad thing at all. Some familiar looking ship shapes and, as we all know by now, WO has a habit of developing quite considerably from the early shots so I'm really curious how this one will look in the end.

Should I be worried about the little Fusionisms (reverse tracks, magnetic bits and one Fusion-like design)? Any word on whether the focus will be on racing or battling? I know the camp is fairly split when it comes to that but I'm a fan of the racing elements.

You know, Pure was so good that I think I'll be more than happy with more of the same or an evolution of that. Colin, are you allowed say if it's roughly the same team as Pure? I guess with you involved it can't go far wrong anyway as you were right on the money with Pure.

Very exciting stuff and I'm really glad it's another PSP game. Though I'm sure many are hoping for a PS3 iteration (and I'm sure it will come), Wipeout worked remarkably well on the PSP and offered so much that I'm really happy we'll get to see that again.

Looking forward to all the news on Pulse (and well done to Yawnstretch!).

Colin Berry
29th March 2007, 01:14 PM
The emphasis will be on the racing more than weapons, as it was with Pure (probably even a little more so than Pure)

The aim of the game from a design perspective has been

- Fix the things the team were unhappy with from Pure (example: acceleration across all ships has been improved)
- Look at the things the fans were unhappy with and address some of those issues (obviosuly not all as some are complete opposites so you cant do both)
- Refine features already there
- Introduce new features that continue on from Pure and help provide a better game

Its very easy to get Wipeout wrong, to change things for the sake of it and to try and reinvent things, this is something we are very conscious of.

Pulse is a full game in its own right and not simply a quick sequel (its 2yrs on release wise) but its also not a complete u-turn from the direction of Pure.

I wish I didnt have to be so vague and could go into more detail, but I'm urging on the side of caution until I know I know what we can say :D

We sent a list of names to the Marketing department and that was the one they liked most.

Back in the summer of 2006 I had an idea of creating a USB attachment that monitored your heart rate while you played the game, as I thought it would be a good way of telling whether multiplayer opponants were stressed or not. That and giving challenges such as "get a lap time of under two minutes at Rapier class with a heart rate no more than 30% above your resting pulse".

I figured that most people ended up racing against themselves, anyway, because the AI has traditionally been nothing more than mobile chicanes, so I thought that racing against your own heart rate could add something to the game without messing with the core gameplay.

It could have been used to enhance other aspects, too, like dynamic music or audio effects, depending on the pulse of the player.

Looking back it doesn't seem like such a great idea, which is probably why it was met with an almost universal MEH! by Sony. I even sent the idea to Phil Harrison, but for some reason he never replied. :|

(Damn, you Phil... you never answer my calls any more! ;) )

Anyhoo, when the name of Pulse was decided on some months later I thought it was kind of ironic, but I like it all the same. :D

Dogg Thang
10th April 2007, 02:34 PM
I love that idea! WO1's Rapier Silverstream while trying to keep an even heart rate? That would be a step further in the search for Nirvana. That could be a spiritual experience right there.

eLhabib
12th April 2007, 07:53 AM
I have to say, I absolutely love your idea, Rob! Think about it, what game would be more suitable to such a device than wipEout? Plus, it totally fits into the whole adrenaline/speedrush/jedi-reflex vibe that goes with the game (and should definitely be used more for marketing).
Shame the guys at Sony didn't like it - I, for one, would love to see it realized! :clap

As I can see on the trailer, the new magnetic system on the tracks is called "Mag Lock" and not "Mag Strip". Actually, I think I prefer this name. I think we will really have fun folks!!

I quite like the orange speed pads. Surely orange is the colour of fast? Teaser trailer looks nice. The graphics are lovely and I especially love the sparks bit - a really nice touch. It's very sci-fi and reminds me more than any other WO of F-Zero but then I guess the series is shooting ahead in years so that probably fits. Hope those more natural tracks we've seen in the shots balances that out a bit but in a way that compliments, not clashes with, the futuristic city stuff.

I'm really impressed with the lighting effects. I realise that's likely a bit of a difficulty for the design team given that dark sections are very hard to see on the PSP screen so it's great to see that there are very dynamic lighting effects while still keeping things bright.

I'm liking it!

Oh blimey.

It's the year 2207 and it really looks like EG-X is the bastard offspring of EG-R and Xios. Bring it on! :banzai

Ahem. I really love the looks of the tracks. It all looks... brave, and splendid. It really looks like the future! At least, it looks like a technocrat's kind of future, and I'm a technocrat :D

Tracks looks very diverse, with a MOST nice sense of vertigo to a coupla them. Mag-sections are gonna be awesome, considering how being glued to the track will be 1) limited to such sections and 2) justified with the magnetic aspect of the thing.

I think I'm gonna self-combust. Life's just wonderful :hyper

meh. sorry to break the mood here, but I'm not sure if I like the style (of the trailer, that is). Especially the 'mag lock' bit, and also the logo and font styles, plus the techy color scheme, just doesn't suit me - I just love purE's bland, clean color scheme, from a graphics design standpoint. could very well be that this trailer leads my expectations of what the final game will look like in a wrong direction, though. let's just hope they kept the purE style (2097 style, respectively).

A 16-event grid full of 16-track tournaments anyone? Now even that is too much for us fight club guys lol...........right?

You know what would be cool? If they have a mag strip route and a normal route on the same area of track so we have one ships going along the normal area and another along the wall this could also reduce the ability of the lead ship to place bombs/mines where they will inevitably be hit by the second place craft meaning closer racing

I like

- the Goteki ship
- the Qirex ship
- the blur-effect after a speed-pad
- the option to switch between 2 HUDs
- the option to turn off the HUD (?)
- AG-5Y5's backlights
- the mag-lock route going 90°

I don't like

- the weapon symbol that is placed to centered and to far away from the top and thus gives you a worse view over the track
- the shield
- the return of Pure's missile (I like the classic one more that does not fly zigzag)
- the exactly the same ship-models for some ships
- the water (look at Ridge Racer, guys, that is what it should look like)

I'm not quite sure yet about

- the very minimalistic HUD
- the weapon symbols
- Piranha's livery

I happen to know that Egg has worked long and hard on the ship models for Pulse, Max, so don't be too quick to write them off as identical to those in Pure. Considering there are only ten years between the two leagues, Egg didn't want to evolve them too radically from the Pure models, and I think that was a good aproach. :)

New Screens (http://media.psp.ign.com/media/882/882255/imgs_1.html) are now up on IGN, as well as a hands-on from E3 which really doesn't explain much else that we don't already know.

The new screens, on the other hand, look absolutely ORGASMIC. OK, maybe that's too strong of an adjective. Any other suggestions?

EDIT: Screenshot four shows an inverted livery for Qirex - mostly white with purple trim and lettering, as opposed to all purple with white trim and lettering. This is new...

I'm thinking that's the case, since I've seen a Zone ship with a FEISAR decal on the back end. Of course it still doesn't explain why there's a White Qirex for normal racing...White Russian livery? :D

Really awesome. Contains a video of a track called Anasazi. Awesome (and open) outdoors track. :hyper Looks like it's on Mars, considering that the grandstand is inside an inclosed section. Also has a video of Zone mode in action on Arc Prime reverse. And finally a circuit I don't know of (but look at my darling AG5Y5 go;))

That's all!

RJ O'Connell

This is the best gameplay vid around. (Because it's official, duh. The whole preview code scare has gotten everyone slightly paranoid if you ask me.)

Anasazi was seen in one of the first screenshots for Pulse, and it looks even cooler in motion (you're right, it does look like a Mars venue). The industrial park-type track near the end where AG-S was flying looks beautiful and quite challenging.

Never heard any of the music before but a lot of it sounds killer. \m/

GameSpot earned back about 50 karma points for putting this up. Nice find Angryman, and welcome to WipeoutZone!

By the way, I think your submit button grew a brain and did a double-post for you ;)

Dogg Thang
13th July 2007, 05:13 PM
I can't open that page for whatever reason. Anyone have another link?

Edit: It's okay. The vid was on IGN. The outdoor bits of that look excellent. I love the rocks and the layout.

But...

Every shot I have seen so far of Pulse has looked like the Delta packs and everything bar the rocks in this do too. They all seem to be using the same fans, tunnels, lights etc. I was actually playing the Delta pack today and could really see how it seems to be the father of Pulse. Those yellow arches in some of the Pulse shots look like a reshape of the yellow arches in Iridia for example. The Pulse tracks look very well made, but I'm already building up a huge sense of familiarity with the sci-fi industrial assets used around the tracks. I'm really hoping the tracks will feel more different in actual play.

Actually, anyone else spot arches in this vid that look just like the arches in Ubermall?

There didn't seem to be any mag-lock sections in this track. A good sign that they may be used sparingly.

Edit2: Having two of my burning questions answered in this video (announcer and sound effects) also leaves me just a little disappointed. The announcer being the same as Pure seems like a bit of a missed opportunity. While I had no problem with the announcer in Pure, this is a new game so I was hoping for something cool. And the sound effects too seem to have come straight from Pure. Again, nothing wrong with them but new game, new locations, new weapons and new craft. I'd have hoped the world of Pulse would sound a little different. Is it possible sound is still being worked on I wonder?

Dr. Angryman
13th July 2007, 05:43 PM
Awesome, eh? Sorry for the double-post. In the words of AG5Y5, "Let's be friends!" :D

I love the Anasazi circuit so far. It has a mix of industry and nature. :banzai
The city park circuit is a mystery but it does look nice. :hyper Zone mode is awesome as always.

If you look at the end of the video you can see some custom liveries! :D
I'm going to have so much fun with that! :beer

Egg
13th July 2007, 07:23 PM
"Is it possible sound is still being worked on I wonder?"

Yes.

"If you look at the end of the video you can see some custom liveries!"

Indeed. Done by our producer Paul, to prove that anyone can do it. Snigger.

"Anasazi ... Looks like it's on Mars"

No.

It's also worth noting that this code is also old (though not as old as the leaked promo). The weapons have come on in leaps and bounds recently - notice the old bomb and quake are still in there - and the "flattened" ships in the Menu Screens have since been corrected.

But as a whole, it gives you a good idea of the detail and speed of the game.

I was hoping for Zone Ship liveries of normal Ag craft, but as I am not a massive fan of Zone, I am content. Yes, the new Zone ship does look more elegant that the last IMO.

Dr. Angryman
26th July 2007, 02:58 PM
I heard the Zone ships changed colors according to the team you chose. I'm guessing:

Blue=Feisar
Khaki=Assegai
Red=Pirhana
White=AG5Y5
Dark green=Triakis
Maroon=EG.X
Purple=Qirex
Pink=Goteki45

Task
26th July 2007, 03:50 PM
Pink should be Icaras, Yellow is Goteki.

Mark Of Insanity
26th July 2007, 05:29 PM
I'd have put red at AG Sys and orange on Piranha, but then Goteki wouldn't be able to have orange, and the orange and yellow look largely similiar, so your guesses seem mostly correct, then what Task said. But I think Feisar would be Aqua or something, would it not?

Dr. Angryman
26th July 2007, 07:13 PM
All these colors! Let's just wait until the game comes out, eh? ;)

I've a concern about the circuits in Zone mode. Are the colors different from circuit to circuit, or are they the same shades of cool blue and green? It would be kinda neat to see a zone circuit in red (like the third prototype circuit in Wip3out). What do you think? :)

Edit: On one of the screens on IGN, I saw a circuit in a bronze-ish kinda color. This proves that Zone circuits will have different colors.

Lance
26th July 2007, 11:41 PM
Even though I'm a huge fan of WO2 Qirex, Icaras deserves ''purple'', too, or whatever colour that is that you see in the main body of my avatar ship.

RJ O'Connell
27th July 2007, 12:36 AM
Here's what I'm thinking:

FEISAR - Light Blue

Wicked News!!!!!

What about the PS3 though? I picked mine up last week and I am very impressed so far, F1 looks very impressive, can't wait for more details on the PS3 version of Pulse.

Let the good times roll!

its not a ps3 version of pulse, its wipeout hd. just to help.

Dr. Angryman

It's actually a mix of both Pure and Pulse. Seen the Playscope trailer recently?

Mark Of Insanity

I doubt that Harimau would be yellow, but it does make me wonder, what colour would it be...?

Dr. Angryman
28th July 2007, 10:00 PM
I'm not even sure what color it's going to be in the game. It's for a download.
You bring up a good point, though!

RJ O'Connell
29th July 2007, 03:32 AM
Well Mirage will be a download and we all know what colour that ship will be in zone. (IIRC, first purely Green ship since Kel Solaar in WO1.) Harimau has to be yellow since their other two colours, aqua/teal and orange, are likely taken by other teams (FEISAR and Goteki 45 respectively.)

So now I'm waiting for the Leipzig Games Convention, and the launch of the official sites.

Dr. Angryman
29th July 2007, 04:30 AM
Sony says that something absolutely amazing will happen at Leipzig. Let's hope it involves WipEout! ;)

Oh, and another thing. I read on Wikipedia that the Anasazi were a Native American tribe located in Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona. This makes it clear where the Pulse circuit is going to be located.

RJ O'Connell
29th July 2007, 03:47 PM
Angryman: If (by now it's a small if) it turns to be true, you know who wildly guessed it correctly first! ;) :D

Diverging from topic slightly, Leipzig Games Conference is supposedly going to be bigger than E3 was in 2006 (before the downsizing and de-spectacle-ating.) Anyone willing to sneak me on a plane bound for Germany? (as if.)

LOOK AT THIS! :g

http://play.tm/story/12249

WOOT! NEW WIPEOUT PULSE TRAILER! AWESOME CIRCUITS! AWESOME SHIPS! AWESOME SONG! (I don't care what you say, Mason's Exceeder is AWESOME!) :rock

New circuits: There is a circuit based in a natural environment, and I'm happy about that. It's not all Delta-esque. I really like the tundra circuit. Nice and icy! Didn't catch the names though....

Weapons: Plasma looks FIERCE! A spinning black hole of DOOM! Missile looks almost the same, but I had no problem with it in the first place. The rockets.... are BEAUTIFUL!

Ships: Looks like there are going to be different liveries per team.... Cool!

Graphics: SWEEEEEEEET! *drool*

Stupid me, clicked the link. I swore to myself not to view any Pulse preview material. Anyway, closed it after about 10 seconds. Video quality sucks. The song really is good. I wonder if it's just preview material or from, the soundtrack. I hope it's not a special arrangement for Pulse's intro.

RJ O'Connell
5th August 2007, 03:36 PM
I watched it in high-res, and thought it looked rather nice myself.

The music is from the original version of Exceeder, but it is sort of a sample - playing the first bit of the song and then skipping to later on in the track.

Dogg Thang
5th August 2007, 03:38 PM
Nice trailer. The environments seem more varied than the initial shots suggested. I'm so looking forward to it. Didn't say a date - do we have one yet?

RJ O'Connell

Nope. Listed in USA as "To Be Determined."

Hopefully we can get an announcement around or during the Leipzig convention...and maybe the official site launch will come around soon...

How did you see it in hi-res? Or do you just mean at the higher of the two vid qualities presented on the webpage?

Just curious... I'd love to see it in a proper resolution on Quicktime!

Lotsa karma to Angryman I say :rock

Love it. Just love it. The coastal track would be called Moa Therma, I reckon.

I love tha color pattern of these previews. Still flashy and colored, but so much more real than Pure (which was already awesome). It's like a hybrid of 2097, Wip3out and Pure. Love the violent colors. Love the dark. Love the greys.

C'mon people, should be less than a month now :hyper

benjahman
6th August 2007, 07:26 PM
i just think it's because those sites who sell WO Pulse have to give an exact date to sell their games.
They will certainly have problems if they propose Pulse the 5th of September if this one actualy comes out the 10th for exemple.
As us, they don't really know when the game exactly launches I think, they have to give an approximation date to be sure to cover their asses.
Well, that's my feeling, maybe I'm wrong...

RJ O'Connell
6th August 2007, 07:48 PM
When Wipeout Fusion was soon to come out the release date was pushed back twice within a month. And I had it reserved as far back as 2001. (I was anticipating a good game. How dumb.) But for awhile it didn't have a concrete release, and for a year I thought it would never be released.

I personally don't mind waiting for Pulse. I just want to know how long I would have to wait, that's all. That's the harder part.

zargz
6th August 2007, 07:52 PM
well I think it better be late and good than on time and rushed with lots of bugs! 8)

RJ O'Connell
6th August 2007, 07:58 PM
I've been bitten by that before - sometimes waiting awhile doesn't necessarily mean the game will not be buggy and sub-par. Gran Turismo 2 anyone?

The difference is, Wipeout Pulse looks like the best installment of the series since Wipeout XL. And that's just from the trailers I've watched!

Dr. Angryman

That was uploaded to YouTube yesterday, though I hesitated to post it.

And it's nice to know the quality of the preview game players are improving, even if he/she is bouncing off the walls.

That 90-degree sweeping curve at Moa Therma looks like something out of a roller coaster. That is AWEXOME to the extreme.

Dr. Angryman

Can't wait for the Pulse!

RJ O'Connell

That's exactly why I hesitated to post that. What the hell is that proton cannon wannabe? It looks like the freaking laser from EXTREME G for the N64!!!

Dr. Angryman
8th August 2007, 01:15 PM
The cannon does look kinda ugly, don't it? It just looks weak and flimsy compared to the rockets. Thankfully, this is an old promo, and this stuff has probably been worked out. As for the music, HELL YEAH! :rock
