A couple of days ago it said september. I guess that's it, then. More waiting. I hope we'll get a demo. If LocoRoco can have four of them (maybe more, but the four I have), Pulse could have one. Maybe. :) [Crosses fingers]

[Off topic] I've been wondering, if european version of Pure comes with a shareable demo on UMD, why wasn't it available for download as a regular demo? Was it size constrained? Just courious.

I'll put you all out of your misery - you shouldn't expect it for a while yet. A "proper" holding page will appear sooner than the finished site, so when you see that you'll know it's not far off.

Official European PSP site now lists the release date as November 2007. What's up with that? I wouldn't be surprised if the date later changes to "Christmass 2007". :brickwall

I feel like it's not long until it ships but looking at the dates scares me - I don't know if I'll survive that long without Pulse! :o

Lack of a firm release date so late in the game is never a good sign, especially for an AAA release and system mascot like Wipeout.

I want to play Pulse as soon as possible but am now expecting this as a holiday release :xtree

It'll be worth it if the time allows for a smoother online experience-- or if it gives the franchise a broader user base. I'm always amazed how much game software sales are buoyed by the holiday season.

Fusion had a firm release date. I think it had three of them, actually. THAT is a bad sign!
Release dates are invented by PR people, part of an advertising campaign to build hype. Pulse isn't a launch title, and since Pure was one of the best it doesn't need some huge marketing campaign. What a nice piece of software needs is the time to do it right. The lack of marketing at this point is looking like a very _good_ thing, nobody's trying to push Pulse out the door before it's really ready. I can't imagine a better sign, myself.

I more get the impression that they're going for surprise value with Pulse.
I'd expect a bit of an announcement in November: "Wipeout: Pulse, launching in two weeks!"

Since they seem to really be aiming for fantastic infrastructure play, I'm of the firm believe that a smooth online experience is _exactly_ what they're working hard at and what would take an indeterminate amount of time. Internet multiplayer at Phantom speeds is a _very_ difficult nut to crack. And with that as the core functionality, I expect simultaneous worldwide release as well.

It'll be ready when it's ready. They'll let us know. Reelaaxxx...

RJ O'Connell
19th August 2007, 02:43 PM
Working on a movie set almost every day during filming has made me incredibly patient in time. Since it most likely appears that September will be out of the question, I'd expect an October release date worldwide, with maybe a difference of 1-2 weeks between regional releases.

I really hope you are right, Task, but to my recollection, I've NEVER seen a major game release launch that way. My experience is that the a firm release date is usually identified at least 1-2 months before the actual release, and that the marketing thing starts rolling 2-4 weeks before the release date. But hey, prove me wrong, SL! :)

Regardless, I must confess, I'm having so much fun with Pure right now that I probably won't miss the September window as much as I would have thought. I'm hoping to have Pulse release before the holidays though. :p

That new-looking track...the one with the rather wide hairpin....reminds me of Citta Nuova. Only with more room to run off, and hopefully the gravity effects won't force snap oversteer into the inside wall, like Shitta.

New screens on Gamespot. May not look new at first, but scroll down! ;) Some of the new screens show a normal race with Zone ships, and some menu screenies. The menu shots show some interesting features, such as a weapons graph (shows you how many of each weapon you used), a mode graph (the same as the weapons graph, except this time it is for time spent on various game modes), an updated "ship stats" screen, an in-game manual, and a Fox News-esque news scroller on the bottom of the menu that gives you some "did you know" facts. Interesting indeed! :g

Sausehuhn

I do understand all this speculation - people are waiting for the game and there's still no official word from Sony. And because the original date was September and everybody's wondering why Sony does not give us any specific release date, everybody starts searching for the real release.
Consequentially we're searching for more sources that offer these dates.

The only problem: they all differ.

It's amazing how quickly a hoax release list can spread around the internet and be taken as official.

That's why I usually don't comment on these kind of things. Speculating about the release date or why the game's not on the market by now won't speed up the game's development in any way. It'll be released when it's finished - that's how things work... nothing else to be said...

Great spot, Flash, I`d totally forgotten about this. A track in the UK at last, and in Wales, no less, awesome. And Platinum Rush.... SilverStream.... both in Greenland and both related to a precious metal and a form of motion. Now where do I claim my prize? :paperbag

Also the Qirex, Piranha and Assegai are too lush.....

Quite a lot of mag-lock, it seems, but looking at the video clips on the site I have a feeling it`s going to work well, and may also cut down on silly low altitude semi-random barrel rolls that plague Pure.

Bombs time out and blow up, it says, which will change things a bit. I`m really scared of that Leech thing in the hands of some of the players here.

Really great site, congrats to the SL people for that. :rock

I also thought that too, but you beat me there in saying it first, fair and square. :D

I also like the difference between the black and white runs on Metropia. On White, the track spirals up a skyscraper. On Black, it plunges into the depths of the city, before looping upright again. Neat. 8)

AG-SYS won the championship, AG-SYS won the championship...*sings* Nice backstories in there.;) I admired my next ship with a bit of drooling. Not very becoming but how does one prevent that anyways??

I love how the autopilot is described as an automated expert pilot. I'm assuming it won't fly you off the track or into walls like it does in Pure! Sounds great, like a real autopilot should be!! (For those cheaters like me who occasionally use them when they get them.)

Metropia (Black) and Basilico (Canada!) for the win. Dystopic urban city centers? Sing, baby. As my boy Billy Gibson would say -- EDGE.

The massive drop on the Amphiseum is crazy. That's gonna be a time trial nightmare.

I love that huge drop on Metropia Black. Reminds me of Katamoda's huge drop in Fusion, the one that goes straight down then under itself for an "upside-down question mark" effect. Nice. 8)

I also like the jump before the grandstand in Amphiseum. Reminds me of Garde Europa in XL.

Wait:

Metropia has same drop as Katamoda 12.

Amphiseum has jump like Garde Europa.

Platinum Rush has a title similar to that of Silverstream.

Talon's Junction sounds like Talon's reach.

It looks like they're taking a lot of inspiration from previous games. Good idea! ;)

Happens sometimes in North America for really big releases-- Zelda: Twilight Princess released on a Sunday, if I recall correctly.

Gamespot has released a hands-on impressions article about WipEout Pulse (finally!).

http://www.gamespot.com/psp/driving/wipeoutpulse/news.html?page=1&sid=6182175&part=rss&tag=gs_all_games&subj=6182175

They say the same things other game sites have said months before, except there is one little detail: they say Pulse's release date in December is going to be global. I'm not sure what that means, but what I think they're saying is that there will be no delay between the UK and the US releases. If that's true, then my life for the next month is going to be perfect! :g

From what i can remember (i think it was Colin's words), the livery editor was supposed to go online in august when the game was still planned for a september release (exactly 1 month before).

Here's a little German video of Pulse. I can't understand German, so I'm not sure if they're talking about any new content or a release date. :| At least the revised "3, 2, 1, GO!" countdown graphic is a little more pleasing to the eye than the last one, IMO. ;)

Update: Another German video... of Eliminator Mode! The menus on Pulse look as awesome as ever with the new track maps. Also, I can't hear it completely but I think I hear an announcer speaking during the "introduction" of a race. Finally, when a weapon's projectile goes out of bounds of the track, a greenish shield deploys to keep the explosion from the spectators. Sweet. 8)

As a demonstration of technology, the review serves its purpose (kinda). As a demonstration of skill, it clearly does not, however I don't feel it's within the scope of a review to need to demonstrate any. Besides, those guys probably have other things to do, like review a dozen other games and publish web columns, etc.

Sausehuhn

If you understand German you will notice very fast that they do not know much about the game. If somebody previews something I expect them to look into the subject.
Sure, they don't have to know everything about the game and its history. But that preview is, except for the videos, totally useless. He actually says just what's written on a sheet (and he says something wrong about the loyalty bonus as well...) and that's it.
It was nice to watch (and that's it basically if you do not understand German), but if you were expecting a real look into the game (and that's what you expect when they have it the 1st time in their show) then you're on the wrong way.

Flashback Jack
14th November 2007, 07:50 PM
Considering that reviews are essentially news reporting, yes, I agree with you that they should communicate factual information leveraged by a reasonable degree of research. If they fail in the facts department, the credibility of their review suffers and may negatively impact opinions toward them as reviewers, or worse, toward the game. One cannot assume an audience has access to all the facts, so a reviewer as a technology reporter shoulders that burden.

Frankly, even if the review were in English, I wouldn't care for much about what any one reviewer says anyway, because I'm used to considering three sources at a minimum to guage factual consistency -- the more the better. If a reviewer has his facts on backward, strike his ass out and move on.

Putting it all together, this might be a sucky review overall, but if an intelligent consumer's buck stops with this one review, fifty lashes for being an idiot. Aside from this, I still don't think it's necessary that a reviewer demonstrates any semblance of skill, but in the case of Pulse they should know enough to be able to tell people that there are airbrakes. :)

Frances_Penfold

Yep, Angryman, many of us fellow Americans/Canadians have imported the PAL UMD for Wipeout Pure to get access to the extra tracks-- the PSP is 100% region free for games, no need for hacking or special settings, nothing! Also, a UMD from the UK or AU will have an english language option, so you don't need to worry about that, either.

Frances_Penfold
25th November 2007, 01:10 AM
Very sorry if that came across as insulting-- not my intent!

Most importing that North Americans do is from JPN, and for most games imported from JPN, the game is only in Japanese-- but sometimes there is an option for English in a JPN game. That's what I was referencing! I don't have that much experience with PAL games but don't they usually offer multiple language options at the title screen? For example, it's not like games released in Europe are localized for each country there, right? You simply select your language preference-- with english as one option. Maybe?

Of course, with Wipeout, it probably wouldn't be THAT hard to play a game in another language :)

I don't have that much experience with PAL games but don't they usually offer multiple language options at the title screen?

Usually, yes, and often games "look" at the language settings of your console/handheld. As for Germany, there's this unfortunate tendency that games would come in only one language, so localized releases can't be played in their original version. :(

I think that might be because of Germany's strict censoring laws. A lot of games with gore are forced to get rid of the gore (or at best, tone it down) before being released.

Case in point: Far Cry
