did you ever know the meanings of the japanese text on your wipEout 1 package?

i wondered so long - and now i got it: it means DESIGNERS REPUBLIC

had a long fight with that one. if you enter the whole phrase to babelfish.altavista.com it wont translate.

the first 5 characters together mean "designer", the last 6 are "republic". the one character between both probably merges the words. and the japanese written "republic" is very rare - try to get sites with that via google...

darn, and i liked die Unendliche Geschichte so much... ;)

very good detective work. how did you figure out what it meant? what resources did you use for translation? i'd like to know because i use japanese on my website, and i'd like to be more certain of what i'm talking about.

for translating i always use http://babel.altavista.com/ . you can translate english to japanese and vice versa. poorly it often translates to kanji characters and no katakanas.

so i have an additional method: i search just something with the japanese version of http://www.google.co.jp and try to capture every single katakana character of the words i want to translate into english. when i got all of them, i hit babelfish with them - and sometimes it will be translated (in the case of japanese "republic" it didnt work, but the "designer" was successful; but by searching for the japanese-written "republic" with japanese google i found around 19 pages and visited some of them - one page showed up a picture of some air-fighter with the nickname "republic" - so i got it).

and so i build up my very own little dictionary by creating filenames (no size at all - just a filename) of the english word and the associated japanese characters (use NT because of the unicode support).

anyway - be aware by translating whole sentences into japanese - theyre so screwed up if you translate them back...
