I read an article on the web about Pure, and the editor who wrote it had actually played an early build of the game, and reported of 8 teams, four of which were Feisar, Piranha, Quirex and HARIMA. So it seems like we know at least one of the new teams...

Yup, its true.
Its actually spelt Harimau though :D

I looked Harimau up in google (yes, bit freaky i know) and i saw that it was assosiated a few times with a tiger. Maybe a connection? :D

harimau seems also to be an Indonesian word, in at least one of the dialects, anyway. there seems to be a tiger style of combat, of pencak silat

So Colin, any other new teams, and any possibility you can tell us the names (and maybe if you're allowed the colour schemes so we can decipher the screenshots) :)

the harimau logo is in the officail trailer - reminds me of a child friendly like logo of tigron - i think it was a flame icon. Actually it isnt it is three cuved thing making a traingle.

Once there's a team in there that handles the way I like it (I like it WO1/WO2 style*).

*That sounds a bit perverted. Apologies!

[Lance]: Indeed. Silat Harimau Minangkabau comes from western Sumatra. Harimau means "Tiger", and Minangkabau is the tribe that developed this style. A mainly ground combat style, it focuses on langkah (footwork). The gerak (movements) of the pesilat (fighter) are fast and aggressive, evoking the swiftness of the tiger, and his/her sikap (stance) resembles a tiger with its claws unsheathed. Pouncing takedowns, eye gouges, throat grabs, sweeps, breakfalls, and myriad kicks from a position seated low to the ground are common elements to this style. Also common are arm, ankle, and knee joint locks.

Man I wish I could click my fingers and have wipeout pure this instant.

Oh well - I'll just have to play some more Ridge Racers ;)

24th January 2005, 10:11 PM
perhaps if you try rightklick your fingers it'll work! :D

sounds to me like you have a psp so here's a question I'd like to ask about it:
is the D-pad as sensitive as on the ps2 controllers?
meaning it has 3 different d'grees of sensitivity 8O

Try if you can turn your wheels in different angles depending on how hard you press the D-pad on your Ridge racers!

Cheers!

hey zargz,

No the PSP doesnt have a pressure sensitive d-pad but it's very responsive - you'll like it trust me. One thing that has become apparent to me though is that the square circle x and triangle buttons are rather close to each other. You may or may not know that the square circle x and triangle buttons are smaller on the psp than on the ps2/ps1.

They look better than a ps2 pad because the symbols are inside the clear buttons but I didnt notice until recently that it can be awkward to press these different buttons with your thumb because of their closeness and size.

I've practiced a bit (even though ridge racer doesnt require it) and I think it will be ok - but it will definitely take a little bit of adjustment for people who press these buttons the way I do...

For example, when I play wipeout I lean the middle joint of my right thumb on the x button and then use the tip of my thumb (or slightly lean the upper part of my thumb left or right) to press circle or square easily. This way isnt as easy on the PSP imo. I dont have big thumbs but I have to improve my dexterity somewhat in order to quickly press circle or square.

At first I thought I'd have to map weapons fire onto triangle (as it's easy to press triangle with the tip of your thumb whilst holding down x with the joint in your thumb) but I've been practising using the circle button as I race and it may be ok.

Theres a lot more I can answer about the PSP if anyone has any specific questions that havent been answered but all in all it is a truly amazing machine and I have no hesitations in saying that its the best console hardware I've ever owned. Now- Bring me GAMES!

Rapier Racer
25th January 2005, 04:23 PM
How can you press the buttons like that?? I tried that once after observing a friend play and they both hurt like hell after half an hour especially the one I was using to control the d-pad. I prefer the very tip of the thumb when it comes to pressing the buttons

yawnstretch
25th January 2005, 04:53 PM
Curiously I only use my right thumb that way; my left thumb uses the tip for the d-pad movements.

Basically I hate taking my thumb off acceleration - EVER.

yawnstretch: thanks 4 the info! :)

Coool technique! I press the X-button with my thumb like I'm gonna leave fingerprints to da police - not that I ever did that! 8O
The thumb pointing in straight line between the X and Square buttons ( stil on the X-button ).
To shoot I glide quick to the right and to discard weapon to the left ( or straight between X and Square-bttn ) without ever letting go of the X-button! 8)
And thus the Glide technique is revealed! LOL
I actually never thought about it til now when you said how you race .. :D

Most intriguing! I suppose in reality I do something between a slight glide and what I described before, but the PSP buttons are just a tiny bit of a new technique for me.

(Hopefully I wont ever have to use any excuses about button-size when playing wipEout - I aim to trash everyone I ever play!)

Thinking twice about that last sentence - it probably wont apply when Im playing against the zoners online ;)

Nice technique. The only the that bugs me is the square button is a little unresponsive on the PSP (My cuz has the import). I think sony is trying to mess with the consumer again.

DuraFlex
27th January 2005, 07:16 PM
Yeah, its a design failure. Sony wanted to keep the screen big enough so they had to find something to keep the placement of the buttons good without making the psp bigger. Their solution, placing the sensor not directly under the button, works ... until you got some dirt (from sweat ect) in it giving the bad response of the square button.

Here are some pictures of this:

This is the only thing I have red about this. I hope they will fix this. My ps2 also had the failures from the first console, wich has cost me 85€ for a replacement console.

I'm pretty sure they'll find a solution, question is when and how much people will have the older version (allready 4800 units have been send back).

Speaking of finger positions, in Wipeout XL and Wip3out, I use the tip of my thumb to press the X,
and the side of the thumb joint to press the O button.
I keep the tip of the thumb on X, and while it is still there, I tilt my thumb so the joint side presses the O button.
^_^

rejj
29th January 2005, 04:00 AM
I use the underneath of my thumb knuckle on X, which lets me use the tip of my thumb for square. Circle is just a small roll of the thumb to the right, and nobody presses triangle ever so that's not an issue. ;)

KK, guess there's no better place to post this, I figured i'd try and see if I can confirm what teams are in the game (by pausing videos andscreenshots...) Has been done a little I suppose, but not to specifics :)

FEISAR - 7 seconds into the first of the two ingame movies with music on, you see what could only be one of their banners over the track (looks like a very FEISAR logo.)
Auricom (http://pspmedia.ign.com/psp/image/article/582/582751/wipeout-pure-20050125072046658.jpg) - 30 seconds into the same video, big glaring letters above the track.
AG Systems - Because Colin told us it is & you can see another banner in said video.
Qirex (http://pspmedia.ign.com/psp/image/article/582/582751/wipeout-pure-20050125072045299.jpg) - What else could be purple and blue? I as yet have only seen the purple sign near the start of the track in the above video
Piranha (http://pspmedia.ign.com/psp/image/article/577/577585/wipeout-pure-20050105062241098.jpg) - I believe that sign says hungry for speed (judging by other ones about the place)
Horimou - Seen it in the official video and Colin said so in this thread.

Possibles

Assegai

http://pspmedia.ign.com/psp/image/article/577/577585/wipeout-pure-20050105062241723.jpg - Yeah, that's either a FEISAR or an Assegai.
http://pspmedia.ign.com/psp/image/article/582/582751/wipeout-pure-20050125072045768.jpg - Judging by shape, that is an Assegai, i don't remember a double hulled FEISAR :)

Mysteries

Linky (http://www.wipeoutzone.com/user_files.php?user_id=782) In the second half of the ingame movie from IGN (the one with music and sound), coming out of the tunnel (about 6 seconds in) there is a white/grey sign that i can't quite make out :o

On my files page you can also see another that i spotted, a large grey sign with X3 written on it :o

12 seconds into the second half of that video is a third sign on the left of the track, this time white with a turquoise sign on it. :o

EDIT: Nevermind these files, I can't seem to get a screenprint from the video, just turns up blank :?

Then there's the questions: what is A) the red/black ship (http://pspmedia.ign.com/psp/image/article/582/582751/wipeout-pure-20050125072046205.jpg) that seems to be made of two arrows and a slight connector thing in the middle? AG Systems?

And B) the twin hulled white ship (http://pspmedia.ign.com/psp/image/article/577/577585/wipeout-pure-20050105062241098.jpg) seen here with the piranha? Horimou?

Anybody spotted anything worth note otherwise? time for some serious chatting on he ships :D

Assegai

http://pspmedia.ign.com/psp/image/article/577/577585/wipeout-pure-20050105062241723.jpg - Yeah, that's either a FEISAR or an Assegai.
http://pspmedia.ign.com/psp/image/article/582/582751/wipeout-pure-20050125072045768.jpg - Judging by shape, that is an Assegai, i don't remember a double hulled FEISAR :)

That's definitely an Assegai. There was a small picture of it in Edge magazine this month (an actual render rather than a screenshot) and it can't be anything else, unless there's been a random name change. There was a screenshot with a FEISAR as well, it looks pretty much like you'd expect it to.

The red and black one must be the other new team (if it isn't Harimau). Edge said there were two newcomers, and we already know one.

EDIT:

Okay, now I'm a little confused. This screenshot shows a FEISAR ship (note the FEISAR logo on the wing):

http://media.psp.ign.com/media/682/682962/img_2200693.html

However, I originally though that THIS ship was FEISAR, what with the colour scheme and all:

http://media.psp.ign.com/media/682/682962/img_2530478.html

Dunno what's going on here. They're definitely different ships. The only thing I can think of is that this second screenshot shows one of the new teams, meaning that the red ship must be AG-S.

@ Hellfire

You thought this was Feisar?! http://pspmedia.ign.com/psp/image/article/577/577585/wipeout-pure-20050105062243363.jpg
Erm...why?!
This ship has a totally different design and doesn't look like a Feisar I think...

@ Dimensions

I have the same problem. You can't make any screens :? You just can make some when you watch the video with Quicktime.... but not every video works. maybe you need a converter or something

Hellfire_WZ
2nd February 2005, 04:24 PM
Well... considering the blue/yellow colour scheme (pretty much a FEISAR trademark), and the fact that I saw it before the actual FEISAR pic, it seems quite a reasonable mistake to me. Mind you, I see what you mean about the design, I felt a bit silly when I saw the actual pic...

Would anyone be willing to shed any light on which team this is, or is it all under lock and key?

Dimension
3rd February 2005, 03:22 AM
to me, the red mystery ship and the one you thought was a FEISAR look like they could be the same ship with different colour schemes, look at it as if they changed the design somewhat between the two sets of pics being released (since those two pics are from different dates), it may not be, but I guess it's a possibility, maybe FEISAR's seeing red suddenly :D

I'm not sure, but I think I saw both ships in the offical trailer. So I don't think they are the same.

conserning the last picture, it's not an alternative piranha design, i figure its the piranha ship in prototype mode (ya know, the tron-like tracks)

No, I don't think so. There's no yellow and the design is different. I would like to know what the others here at the zone say about this.
Maybe I'm wrong.

I will watch the trailer again. Maybe I can figure out which ship it is...

edit:
Watched the trailer and I think it is AG-5Y5TEMS.

That's an AG-S. I think the lighting is making the emblem look more yellow than it actually is.
